But "elite fighting forces" means (at least for me) the crack division, corps (like the marines) or army (like the 6th german army) of a country/alliance army.

Canadians were elite fighting forces in WW2. They were the spearhead forces of the allied invasion in Normandy (and in many other campaigns). They were on every one of the theatre the allied fought.
And we escorted most of the convoys in the Atlantic. The Atlantic battle is the longest campaign of the war 3rd sept. 1939 - 8 may 1945.

@brightsghost American Soldiers fought well, fought bravely, it's true But you're wrong thinking the US took action where no-one else would. There were two wars going on in 1939, the war in Europe and the Sino (china)-Japanese war. Japan was being denied Oil by the US, Britain, and the Dutch East Indies to force them to stop attacking China so they in turn attacked the allies. They Chose Pearl harbour as the US had a strong naval fleet. By chance some of the fleet was out at the time.
@ickleoli This forced the US to declare war on Japan and get involved in the war. Up until that point, they were neutral. China then declared war against Germany, italy and Japan which brought the US into the war further as well as England buying huge amounts of manpower and machinery from the US to help as well. Ironic then that after all this, the biggest reason Germany lost wasn't England OR the USA. It was Russia.

I believe the Germans were cleary the best soldiers in the war. They put up a hell of a fight with the standard infantry having bolt action mausers vs the U.S. m1 garand. If they had something like the m1 they would have conquered even faster then they did and so on.

None of us who are young today will ever fully understand what the poor men of WWII went through. I collect & shoot WWII weapons and I've read many books by veterans of the eastern front. That brings an extra dimension to watching this. I feel so sorry for the soldiers and what horror and sadness they had to endure. But at the same time I look up to them as heroes. No matter what side they were fighting for. Unimaginable.
@joelSanFrancisco Actually there were many on both sides who weren't exactly heroes. Atrocities were comitted by all part takers in the conflict. Both soldiers, partisans, resistance people etc did terrible things. But to name only soldiers fighting against Hitler as possible heroes would be unfair. There were noble people fighting for their country & loved ones in the Wehrmacht also. Fighting for Stalin, who was no better than Hitler, isn't exactly a good deed? We all know what happened after.

Its never mentioned that German nationals were being murdered by the Polish government, over 50,000 and Hitler tried to stop it peacefully. All of Europe was joining up and wanted a part of it so i don't like it when people say the SS was the worst guys of the lot and its all Germany's fault. Canadians were elite fighting forces in WW2. They were the spearhead forces of the allied invasion in Normandy (and in many other campaigns). They were on every one of the theatre the allied fought.
And we escorted most of the convoys in the Atlantic. The Atlantic battle is the longest campaign of the war 3rd sept. 1939 - 8 may 1945.
Canadians did their duty. Show some respect.

There were two wars going on in 1939, the war in Europe and the Sino (china)-Japanese war. Japan was being denied Oil by the US, Britain, and the Dutch East Indies to force them to stop attacking China so they in turn attacked the allies. They Chose Pearl harbour as the US had a strong naval fleet. By chance some of the fleet was out at the time.

@ickleoli This forced the US to declare war on Japan and get involved in the war. Up until that point, they were neutral. China then declared war against Germany, italy and Japan which brought the US into the war further as well as England buying huge amounts of manpower and machinery from the US to help as well. Ironic then that after all this, the biggest reason Germany lost wasn't England OR the USA. It was Russia.

I believe the Germans were cleary the best soldiers in the war. They put up a hell of a fight with the standard infantry having bolt action mausers vs the U.S. m1 garand. If they had something like the m1 they would have conquered even faster then they did and so on.

None of us who are young today will ever fully understand what the poor men of WWII went through. I collect & shoot WWII weapons and I've read many books by veterans of the eastern front. That brings an extra dimension to watching this. I feel so sorry for the soldiers and what horror and sadness they had to endure. But at the same time I look up to them as heroes. No matter what side they were fighting for. Unimaginable.

Both soldiers, partisans, resistance people etc did terrible things. But to name only soldiers fighting against Hitler as possible heroes would be unfair. There were noble people fighting for their country & loved ones in the Wehrmacht also. Fighting for Stalin, who was no better than Hitler, isn't exactly a good deed? We all know what happened after.

But the fact is, if you were a young man living in Nazi Germany at the time, you would have been called to fight. And when you're given an order to do something, whether you want to or not, you shut your mouth and do it. That's just how the military works.
The SS and the Gestapo were the ones responsible for the majority of the terrible things you hear about. Not the average soldier.

@HolinessWarrior agreed. even though my grand parents had to fight against the nazi invaders in Ukraine (and frankly I wouldn't be here to write this if they'd been killed) I still admire the fighting spirit of a regular foot soldier and overall skill/strategy.

@MuchoFunkie Correct the other important fact that history misses, unless you did for it, is why the Germans invaded Poland. Its never mentioned that German nationals were being murdered by the Polish government, over 50,000 and Hitler tried to stop it peacefully. When talks broke down Poland was invaded and then Britain and France declared war on Germany which is why they got attacked!!! We have been fed rubbish, its not till you research you find out the Germans were not the bad guys.

@JonhMena Don't hate Germans in general. Hate Hitler. Hitler forced thousand of troops to fight for his cause by killing anyone who refused. Them and their families. Sure, they had some soldiers who did terrible, unspeakable things... but so did we. There is no right in war. It's man killing each other for a foolish cause.
I didn't enlist for the fight. There is no fight. Not like this anyways. But it is all still very wrong.

@TheXWitcher . you forgot to mention the incapability of the "Führer" as the head of the Wehrmacht...But I agree.with the Waffen SS next to them they were an armed forced the world has never seen and will never see again, but for an evil cause. which would never have developed if the empiralistic allies would not have tried to destroy Germany politically and economically by the treaty of Versaille after the WWI. What caused the WW1 and therfore WW2 was certain powers working agianst Germany.

@Elgrande555 Well said. But remember The Waffen SS was a European Organization started by the Germans. Not a German organization started by the Germans. All of Europe was joining up and wanted a part of it so i don't like it when people say the SS was the worst guys of the lot and its all Germany's fault. It had less Germans in it than other Europeans by far.
But i do not support violence on the scale of the second world war. The largest conflict ever between man kind......so far......
