jesus, as much as the police piss me off not helping, i think stalking is such an insidious crime that the law can't really do what it should to prevent it. i mean, how can you define when someone coming near you or calling you becomes illegal? what makes stalking so scary is that your stalker is often times terrorizing you without actually committing any real crime.

10yrs ago my son (just 18YO at the time) was found guilty of ‘wilful negligence’ for his role in the death of this woman’s 15YO daughter on a funfair ride. Apparently it was his job to ensure the safety rails were in place, but he was chatting her up & forgot- easy mistake to make at his age.
I knew a guy that stalked this girl from his school for over 15 years, she got used to him after awhile and just got on with her life. He never done anything bad to her, he was just quite with her and couldnt say much, then facebook came out and he started talking to her on there, but when she tried to talk to him he just walked away. in the end he broke into her house &left a letter on her bed, she came home found him laying naked in her bed with a letter on top on him saying read me, she moved

I'm 19 and I've been stalked by this guy from my highschool for several years. I've never even spoken to him before. I never told anyone because I thought I was being paranoid, but I was dead wrong. To everyone yelling at the cops: they ENFORCE the laws (supposedly), they don't MAKE them. The problem here is that very few states have stalking statutes. If stalking is not considered illegal, then the police have little recourse--they can't arrest someone who hasn't technically committed a crime, and if there are no anti-stalking laws on the books then a stalker has not committed a crime officially.

@j2bodydouble It's definitely one of the scariest types of crime because it's so hard to prove and to get the cops to take you seriously. You have to document and write down every incident before you can get a restraining order. In that time, the obsessed could end up killing you.
@knals16 well the restraining order itself is just paper, one of these nutters i know stalked the judge who had issued a restraining order against them, so never think it makes you safe, you better off but for most its no end to the situation just a step, but remember in actuality your likely in more danger as they are hate filled and fits of rage should be prepared for. There are stalking victims who do not even know their stalkers, but something clues them in to the fact that they are being stalked. One lady where I worked was being stalked. The guy would just follow her and she saw him almost everywhere she went. He had a bashed in front fender and a black BMW. A couple of her co-workers told her that someone was following her. The police refused to even get his plate number because "he hadn't committed any crime."
Since it's 2010 & you're living in the U.S., it won't be a bad idea to know that a good # of stalking cases involve more than one stalker. It's called gang stalking. It's arranged by your local law enforcement which denies it's existence. They don't use uniformed cops or marked police vehicles. Instead they use citizen groups like COPS, county & corporate workers & vehicles to accomplish this. Jesus Christ, people, you can't stop stalking just by raising awareness to possible victims - you have to try and help the stalkers themselves. There's a lot of mental and thought processes that these people aren't reaching, and even though it's hard to imagine how it must be to be a victim, the same goes for being a stalker.
Also, they should be more careful. When I looked up information about stalkers I ended up receiving more ideas to try and provoke the victim than just awareness of it.

I had an ex boyfriend stalker..4 months after I dumped him, he came to my house with a toy I gave him. He said he was returning the toy that I gave him. He said he couldn't look at the toy anymore because it was a reminder of me. He drove 1 hour to return the toy in person. I told him, "Stop contacting me or else I'll call the police" Two months after I told him this, he contacted me over Skype. Fortunately, the police called him and told him to leave me alone. I am recognised by the UK Criminal justice system to be a stalker; I am also recogised by the UK health system to be a sufferer of Asperger's syndrome. My "victim" knows about the diagnosis but claims that Autism and Asperger's syndrome are not real conditions and that I am just a creepy weirdo. There is literally nothing you can do or say to stop a stalker, until they are behind bars. No matter what you do, it will either be interpreted as "evil" or as acceptance. If you are freaked out and traumatized, you are "looking for attention". If you are at your wit's end at being fucked with, you are "evil" for thinking about yourself- as if a girl being raped is "evil" for getting upset while the rapist is raping her.

The only difference is that a rapist is looking for a sexual high and trauma is the outcome-- but a stalker's main goal is to cause trauma. In that sense, it is a crime much more sinister than any other. The trauma, and any emotional reaction due to it, then becomes the justification for further trauma.
I was stalked by the ex boyfriend of my girlfriend, never saw him, he sent me death threats on my voicemail, he even sent me a death threat on facebook (what a dick), so I decided to meet him and I beat the shit out of him and now I have to go on trial in August for battery.

I am currently being stalked at my workplace by my ex-friend. Every single weekend, she goes to the store I work at and loiters around my department. A few weeks ago, she stood on top of me while I was on the floor putting an item on the shelf.

We need stronger laws and education on stalking so that the victim is not blamed. I was a law professor at Howard University and was stalked by a delusional, serial campus stalker who wanted me to be his "wife." I "not renewed" after I reported the stalking. I sued Howard, for sexual harassment and retaliation, in "Martin v. Howard University;" but based on faulty legal instructions to the jury, jurors found that there was no law to protect me. Peggy Klinke was killed in the month of January which is why January is Stalking Awareness Month. Her story is tragic, moving, and needs to be heard. Social awareness brings about social change.

To everyone yelling at the cops: they ENFORCE the laws (supposedly), they don't MAKE them. The problem here is that very few states have stalking statutes. If stalking is not considered illegal, then the police have little recourse--they can't arrest someone who hasn't technically committed a crime, and if there are no anti-stalking laws on the books then a stalker has not committed a crime officially.
Petition your congressperson if this actually bothers you.

The guy would just follow her and she saw him almost everywhere she went. He had a bashed in front fender and a black BMW. A couple of her co-workers told her that someone was following her. I am not being stalked, but I find myself being in the same place me with this "nut", yet at the same time, he wanted nothing to do with me. Like I really cared to begin with. The text messaging telling me how sick I am, well why would the person waste their time. Someone I want nothing to do with, I live that. I know that this person is sick and has been for some time. I am not afraid of him, yet, I am cautious. If something should happen to me, the law will be coming from him.

Jesus Christ, people, you can't stop stalking just by raising awareness to possible victims - you have to try and help the stalkers themselves. There's a lot of mental and thought processes that these people aren't reaching, and even though it's hard to imagine how it must be to be a victim, the same goes for being a stalker.
Also, they should be more careful. When I looked up information about stalkers I ended up receiving more ideas to try and provoke the victim than just awareness of it.

I had an ex boyfriend stalker..4 months after I dumped him, he came to my house with a toy I gave him. He said he was returning the toy that I gave him. He said he couldn't look at the toy anymore because it was a reminder of me. He drove 1 hour to return the toy in person. I am recognised by the UK Criminal justice system to be a stalker; I am also recogised by the UK health system to be a sufferer of Asperger's syndrome. The only difference is that a rapist is looking for a sexual high and trauma is the outcome-- but a stalker's main goal is to cause trauma. In that sense, it is a crime much more sinister than any other. The trauma, and any emotional reaction due to it, then becomes the justification for further trauma.

I have been stalked on and off for the past 6 years, since my ex husband was released from prison. He stalked me when I was married and when I was going through divorce he hired others. His goal was to either kill me or any man I ever ended up with or to put me in prison and I don't think he will ever give up. people who have been stalked , drawn it in their own lives looking for attention... they desire and reject attention... they created it themselves ...not without a reason that moviestars get stalked ...they desire the attention ..and next time they resist the attention (for example paparazzis)

We need stronger laws and education on stalking so that the victim is not blamed. I was a law professor at Howard University and was stalked by a delusional, serial campus stalker who wanted me to be his "wife." I "not renewed" after I reported the stalking. I sued Howard, for sexual harassment and retaliation, in "Martin v. Howard University;" but based on faulty legal instructions to the jury, jurors found that there was no law to protect me. I saw this story on channel E a program they had call INVESTIGATION: Dating Nightmares i tried to find the video instead I found this. This the most craziest stalking story i have ever heard I can't believe the lengths this guy went for an Ex girlfriend.

Thanks for putting the entire story on here! I'm an advocate for stalking victims at the Domestic Violence Resource Center's Protective Orders Advocacy Program in Hillsboro, Oregon, and we use this video for part of our agency training. Peggy Klinke was killed in the month of January which is why January is Stalking Awareness Month. Her story is tragic, moving, and needs to be heard. Social awareness brings about social change.
