@zhengjdc I don't remember if this kitten was feral or not, but I can tell you after having raised over a thousand kittens myself, that it doesn't make a difference if they are feral or not. They almost all hiss at first.
just curious. becoz all my kittens were home born and they never hissed (not that young), the feral kittens I caught in my yard hiss and bite FEROCIOUSLY.
@zhengjdc I can see where you are coming from, makes sense :). I think that even in domesticated and tame cats, the instinct and fear of natural predators is present, hence the hissing at the dog. Once they figured out the dog is not going to hurt them, they calm down. Feral cats take a LOT longer though.
@MJJSmoothCriminal Since I run a rescue, the animals that end up usually have been through hell and back a few times already. Both of these kitties grew up to be healthy cats and have found a great home.
i have 2 Great Danes (8months and almost 9 months) and they both grew up with my kids (2 and almost 4).Every now and then the Danes go crazy and knock over one of the kids. The kids are used to it by now and race to the couch when the Danes have their 5 minutes.lol
Wow, the grey kit reminds me of my silver tabby Shadow. I got him frm a Petsmart that saved him from a "rescue" (KILL) shelter. Was actually looking for a dog (which they had none of) and someone brought a big retriever in. All the cats went crazy but Shadow who went to the front of his cage to touch noses with the dug and rub against it.
My Shadow (literally) taught himself how to play fetch, counted a massive rott as a best friend and loved everyone. Proves cats n dogs can be great friends!
That great dane did seem to be acting like a protective mother. One of the kittens didn't seem to want to be protected, but the other one liked it :-).
thats why we're getting a great dane puppy in 5 weeks time...they are gentle dogs and wouldnt hurt a kitty :) we have 3 kids and after weeks of research this breed stood out from the rest!
If your kids are small, I would advise against a Great Dane. Even though gentle, they are mostly not aware of their size and can knock over kids. The bigger the dog, the bigger the damage.
If your kids are over 10 years old, I'm sure it'll work out just fine with the right training.
Meh, this is why I don't really like dog lovers. They refuse to believe a dog would hurt anything/anybody. No matter how "loving" the dog may appear, it's still an animal (Just ask Seigfried and Roy).
Even if it doesn't hurt it, the cat is clearly scared out of its mind. I'd be too if something ten times the size of me was sniffing at my face.
When I was two a dog bit my face, so I don't really like em, and my doglover friend has a shep she lets all over me, because "he loves me." gag
Just be careful, so the dane doesn't accidentally inhale one of the kittens while licking them... The nose alone is bigger than cats almost...:-) In the end that was very sweet...
I would never really worry about a Great Dane attacking. They are seriously gentle giants by nature, especially if raised with love and awareness. Some dogs think their lap dogs and want to do things smaller dogs can do but Great Danes seem to know they have to reel it in a bit.
That's because you don't know and trust my dogs. I do. I have been working and training dogs all my life, so don't worry, everything's cool :). I would never put an animal in harm's way, especially not for human entertainment.
I get them from Animal Control and the animal shelter. I fostered/raised about 700 kittens in the past 7 years that otherwise would have been euthanized. These kittens look good compared to what I get in sometimes.
Wow I didn't think such a huge dog could be so loving towards a 4 week old kitten. It amazes me at how quick we judge the size of the animal and think that it would only tear apart the smaller animal instead of protect it. This is one of the cutest videos I have seen.
my great dane encountered a kitten once. all he wanted to do was say hi. if a dane wanted to hurt kittens, they can pick them up and throw them any which way.
Kitten would run if he was scared. -- Cats are way more agressive than dogs. -- I don't know much about dogs because I've always had cats but this dog is licking the grey cat. He doesn't seem like he wants to harm them. Kittens are so cute!
Finally somebody who knows what he/she is talking about. Thank you!!! :)))
I have another rescued Great Dane (6) who is starting heartworm treatment today. Her name is Olivia..you can find videos of her under my nick here. Cross your thumbs for her?
I remeber when we brought our kittens home, our dane, Abby, would mother them. She tried to pick them up and she even tried to suckle them, it was most adorable. Great danes are really the greatest dogs ever.
Smart dog! That ginger kitten's having none of it. At least the well meaning dane has the tabby love bucket to soak - I mean groom. ;D Hehe - used to have a farm dog that would steal the barn cat's kittens and take them to her lair for mothering. We'd see the indignant mother cat hauling spit-covered kittens back to the barn.
The way I introduced them is I kept either the cat or the dog in a crate or pen, and let them meet on their own terms. Only if you see that there is tension, I would interfere. The first meeting is the most important, make it a positive experience and don't anticipate any problems..they actually pick up on that nervous energy. Good luck! :)
The great dane will have no problem whatsoever with the cats! They might take a little while to get used to him, but I'm quite sure they'll be good friends within days :-)
It is funny some cats and kittens could care less. I haven't figured out if my cat thinks he is a dog or if he thinks my lab and rottweiler are cats, but either way the all get along and play together. the dogs figure if he is not scared and won't run away ther is no point in chasing

Acne: No-one has the right* to entertainment at the cost of suffering.
Most people would have the decency (and brains) to be ashamed of deriving thrills from such.
Your comments were as bad as searching for videos entitled *Cute Babies* and being disappointed it's not kiddie-porn, or searching for *Frat Party* and being outraged because it doesn't show date-rape.
you misunderstood me. i didn't say anyone was getting hurt. at all. i think it's a cute video.
No...i was appalled that acnefaceface, below, was *disappointed* that noone was getting hurt in this video...and is dumb enough to openly admit to being the kind of creep who wishes there was more videos of animals being hurt. Most ppl with a morbid fascination are at least smart enough to be covert about it.
Calm down everybody! The kitten here just figured out how to hiss and was practicing. He wasn't even scared, because before and after the video he slept snuggled up on the Dane's head where he basically grew up on lol. Right under the huge ear flap hehehe. The Dane has helped me raise literally hundreds of kittens, he's an expert ;P.
what a corageous dude this tiny ginger kitten is. when he's grown up he'll be agreat warrior.

Yes, please people, if you want a dog or cat (or puppy or kitten), PLEASE check out your local animal shelters first!!!
In a city I used to live in, the animal "shelters" used to keep them for a few days before they'd kill them to make room for more.

Acne: No-one has the right* to entertainment at the cost of suffering.
Most people would have the decency (and brains) to be ashamed of deriving thrills from such.
Your comments were as bad as searching for videos entitled *Cute Babies* and being disappointed it's not kiddie-porn, or searching for *Frat Party* and being outraged because it doesn't show date-rape.

shut up hippy. it's a curious dane checking out a confused kitten. no one is getting hurt.

you misunderstood me. i didn't say anyone was getting hurt. at all. i think it's a cute video.
