toook your advice and checked out how i could do this cheaply and downloaded a program called amplitube, very happy with the results although i know it could be better. cant complain though as it cost me 1 pounds fifty (northern ireland). gives a great range of effects. shows how not good my guitar is though as it has absolutley no sustain. still better than what i was using and great for practice. thanks for the advice.

Actually the most important part of the signal chain is your amp!. If you plug a $10,000 Gibson les paul into a $50 amp it will sound like shite, conversely, plug a $50 guitar (which stays in tune and has a reasonable string action) into a Cornford Harlequin ( about £500 ) and you will be more than happy with the results.
