Sale Louis XIV
This ballet wasn't danced by King Louis XIV at Versailles but at Saint Germain en Laye because Versailles castle wasn't built yet when the king was twenties.
In second place, it isn't really clear that Lully foot gangrenous abscess was due to a stoke he did himself with a beating time cane for two reasons. The first one because it wasn't the use to beat time with a cane in church or for liturgical music and then Lully music was led by another conductor than himself (a disciple).
@ticarcillin Hey, I totally love, & am always looking for any films pertaining to baroque/classical composers (Amadeus, Immortal Beloved, Copying Beethoven, etc). I've never seen/heard of this movie. What is it's name??? & what's it about? The life of Lully perhaps? I see you've ordered the DVD last month, which should have arrived by now. Does it have English subtitles & or an English dub? Please let me know as I would love to add a movie like this to my collection. Thanks!
The film is called LE ROI DANSE. I ordered it via ebay in Belgium. It is in French with optional French or Dutch subtitles. I find that very helpful. It mainly deals with Lully, his music and personal life, his friendship to Louis XIV and his increasing influence at Louis' court. Every single second of this movie is worth watching!
@ticarcillin Yea, but I'm just an ignorant, uni-lingual (English speaking only) American, LOL. What I mean is, without English subtitles, it would probably end up becoming frustrating/annoying to me. Damn it. It looks good too. Oh well, maybe someday it will be released with subtitles. Yea, & in the mean time I can wish in 1 hand, poop in the other, & see which fills up 1st, hahaha. Oh well. Anyway, even though the news is discouraging, I thank you for taking the time to inform me. {:oD
@ticarcillin Actually, I wanted to thank you again. I still want to see this movie, subtitles or not. Even though I wouldn't buy it, at least I now know it's name. I notice it is posted on youtube in it's entirety. So, I can just watch it there. Thanks again!
So whatever - enjoy it on youtube then, it's simply gorgeous. I; too, would prefer an edition with ENGLISH subtitles since it is far easier for me to understand :-)
It is a ceremonie that was adopted by the French (perhaps the english also I'm not sure) court from the ceremonies Alexander the great did back in hellenistic times and where continued through the Byzantine times till the french Revolution. The King would always present himself as the son of the Sun nd thus his ruller on earth...
I dont want to interfere in the stupid "Lully was french or italian" discussion. But i want to say it didnt exist before the french revolution a concept of "nationality".
A man was subject of a king, for Lully you right, he became subject of Louis XIV in 1661, at the age of 29.
You're not saying the French weren't French before the Revolution, are you? The concept of nation only didn't exist in its French Revolution interpretation, which is but one and not the most adequate definition. For instance, even the name of the Heiliges Romisches Reich Deutcher Nation reflected the HRE being German, and it was known as that long before Louis XIV.

If Louis XIV didn't screw around with all this flaky court stuff, he could have paid attention to his national affairs, and even defeat the Brits in North America and elsewhere.
@bushi835 Yes with Georges Washington help (a british soldier at this time) who asked then assistance to french king Louis XVI during the independance war. This is a good policy !

Remember, it's a movie! Editing in sound might be possible in film. Also, i must protest - Louis XIV would NEVER have appeared before his court chemiseless! There are engravings galore of him dancing before his court as Apollo: not one has him shirtless. 'Twould have been considered barbaric and VERY embarrassing. This film is overwrought and very inaccurate, especially in the clothing.
Tru dat. I know acoustics, and that it's a movie. I was just pointing out how impossible that would be. Sarcasm is a wonderful tool that can never be over-used. About the half nekked-ness of his royal fartness; there's that great painting with him and his family all sitting down where he's dressed as Apollo, or should I say half-dressed as Apollo. As for the half-nekked movie representation, it's still hot. Can't go wrong with a toned shirtless dude who could prolly crack a walnut with his legs.
oh, okay - you forgot to use the sarcasm emoticon. Touche as far as the painting of Apollo, very good call. Still, even though I'm whipped, i still say he would not've shown his very pasty, pale and decidedly UN-gym-toned bod, but as it's a movie: HAWT!
Oh, okay - you forgot to use the sarcasm emoticon. Good call on the Apollo painting - I know the very one. Touche! And, although i'm pussywhipped, i still say he would not've shown his decidedly pasty-pale UN-Soloflexed bod to court, but as it is just a movie: HAWT!
There's a sarcasm emoticon? Dude! Where have I been?! lol, I agree with you about how he wouldn't have actually been shirtless. I have a friend who wants to be Louis XIV...like the Apollo Louis from the painting. Goes ga-ga over anything french baroque.

Ritual, dance and music were used to display the refinement, power and grandeur of the state. What better person to do this than the king himself?

precision about the infos, french nationality from 1661, not 1681, arrived in france when he was thirteen years old.
