This game's cover in the American version looks all 3D and awesome and you think it'd be sort of like Lord of the Rings where the camera is behind Sun Wukong and you run around and beat people up with combos ETC, but it turns out to be a 2D adventure xD.

I'm not hating on this game though, Sun Wukong is awesome. I'm just pointing out the hilarious-ness of the American cover and the actual game.

this game is old school NES 2-D game, simple and fun.

this game is infuriatingly short and easy. the hard mode is easier than most shootemups easy mode. theres only like 5 or 6 levels, and no difference between the game's 2 modes (arcade and story). the actual gameplay is pretty fun, with nice graphics and a cool motion control that speeds up the game. but anyone could beat this entire game in about 45 minutes.

It looks pretty easy for a shmup, but what can I say - I'm loving how cute the characters are lol. Plus, the first level of most shmups are pretty easy anyways, so maybe it's too early for me to judge by difficulty.

Looks alright, but not worth $20 from the looks of it. It's not that I don't like side-scrolling shoot-em-ups, it's my favorite genre. It's just that this looks more like a freeware game, or at least a Wiiware release.

But -3 stars for being a shooter and using the monkey name. Monkey King is a epic chinese mythology and unfortunately it's been used to create an unepic, non-imaginative game.

How many American, Wii-playing kids do you think would even know there was something called "The Monkey King" if not for this? Maybe some kid'll enjoy this simple game and, through it, become interested in Chinese culture and mythology. (I can't remember where I first heard of Journey to the West, but it was probably somewhere silly.)

This game is coming to the United States as THE MONKEY KING: THE LEGEND BEGINS (January 2008). I can't wait! I love 2-D shooters and this one has incredible music. It's based on the Chinese legend JOURNEY TO THE WEST. I also own a Sega Master System game called CLOUD MASTER which is very similar to this shooter.

That's because Cloud Master is the original Chuuka Taisen, just given a different name, this game is pretty much a spiritual sequel.

As soon as I saw the logo for the Star Fish company, I knew this would be uber-trash. They're one of the biggest producers of low-fi games on any system.
