Katatonia is still metal, it just became more atmospheric. An example of a band that used to play metal, and has slowly drifted away from it is Anathema.

The fact that their music is very, very faggy has nothing to do with their genre.
And for the record, I don't like Brave Murder Day either, to me it just sounds like a metal version of their new stuff. I only really like DoDS and their first EP. I'm not like some purist elitist metalhead, and I like some bands like Alice in Chains, The Cure, Soundgarded, Sisters of Mercy...but in my opinion they pretty much lost all ability to write good songs after DoDS.

I certainly believe there is a difference. Some emos out there are just for the fashion. However, in response to the other comments, in a way, I think such poser emos start out as just that, trying to be emo. Not even emo, but just to seem depressed and tortured. I don't want emo to have negative conotations really. Anyway, sometimes it would seem in this gloomy expectations and aura people fill themselves with purposefully, it does soon accidentally become a part of who they really are.

Being a metal band doesn't mean that a band has to resort to growling/distortion/drop D in every song.

Then please tell me what unifying theme Metal has then. Surely if Metal is a valid genre of music there must be some element linking those bands?
And it's funny that you should bring up Tool and Deftones, as nu-metal is actually commonly disregarded by the metal scene and often even given different names (like mallcore) because it doesn't really belong to metal. But that's a whole different debate.

just to clarify, Tool is avantgrade/experimental metal, NOT nu-metal.
And you can argue that Metal bands are some what unified because MOST metal bands share the same basic instruments (I just didn't say ALL because some one would then say Apocalyptic -.-)
Katatonia is still metal, it just became more atmospheric. An example of a band that used to play metal, and has slowly drifted away from it is Anathema.

And for the record, I don't like Brave Murder Day either, to me it just sounds like a metal version of their new stuff. I only really like DoDS and their first EP. I'm not like some purist elitist metalhead, and I like some bands like Alice in Chains, The Cure, Soundgarded, Sisters of Mercy...but in my opinion they pretty much lost all ability to write good songs after DoDS.
Still, an opinions just an opinion, and everyone has one :P

We know this no need to flame me, now they are melancholic/atmospheric rock. But, they started off as gothic doom and in some magazines are still defined as such. Expect metal from their upcoming album ;)

I mean the music - I do not really like the lyrics.
I know it is not a "cool" attitude, but I do not mind emos and posers and fledging goths :) - they'll get to know it better, they'll understand what all this is about later, or they'll disappear from the scene, that' s all. Besides, someone from the outside cannot judge if "her life" is really a mess or just pretending.
I think this lyrics is not suitable to Katatonia, a band which, nevertheless, deserves to be taken seriously.

But on other hand the only thing i dont like about emo people is their attitude towards everything. I think that some people look quiet good in gothic style clothes adn such.

Yeah people do look good in gothic clothing. But emo's dont wear gothic clothing. Maybe they think they do, but gothic isn't about tight pants and scary shirts. Well.. some people maybe.. but still. Emo's are like anyone else who don't know shit about gothic :) But I've known emo kids who did know a bit about gothic. But those werent really the sad emo kind, they were more fashion emos I think. IF there is a difference.

I certainly believe there is a difference. Some emos out there are just for the fashion. However, in response to the other comments, in a way, I think such poser emos start out as just that, trying to be emo. Not even emo, but just to seem depressed and tortured. I don't want emo to have negative conotations really. Anyway, sometimes it would seem in this gloomy expectations and aura people fill themselves with purposefully, it does soon accidentally become a part of who they really are.
