squirtle is actually a squirrel and a turtle (double play on words since he squirts water as well) just look at a picture, he has a squirrels tail, bulbasaur is just the smallest version of a plant, the bulb (not counting the seed, i honestly dont get the saur part but w/e), and charmander is char as in charred or burned, and salamander, which is a pretty small lizard, and the names fit since they're all starting pokemon :P
