I read in Marshall Grants book that John actually recorded The Gambler first with the same producer Kenny Rogers used. But apparently Cash was being "Cash" that day in the studio, and the producer ended up recording Kenny Rogers about two weeks later and took it straight to market as a single. This was in the late 70's when Johnny started drifting back on the pills. Who knows. If the producer pushed to get Johns version out on the airwaves first, it might have been HIS megahit.
