urgh! Probably the worst era The Who had. Compared to their heyday, this is pretty pathetic. Having seen them both in '79 and 2006, I can attest that the '06 show was better in terms of sheer energy. Keith Moon was the best, but Phillips or Jones make a pretty poor replacement. At least Zak comes at it from the same POV. Thanks for posting as we (somewhat thankfully) don't get a lot from this era.
My favorite of all the many outstanding Who tracks. The lack of fast drumming during the chorus is noticeable, but I have to conclude that with any classic band, it is better to see them than to stay home. They still are great, maybe not like the original, but great still.
I really like the who. But back when I lived in Milwaukee, The Who was going on tour, but wasn't stopping in Milwaukee. So the DJ sat out on the station roof and played absolutely nothing but The Who. And I mean NOTHING but the who. O don't even remember whether they came or not, I was so sick if The Who.
In their heydey I beelvie the Who through 1982 were the greatest LIVE band -EVER. You can claim Zeppelin..buty ONLY during theirt 1969-1971 era--after that page was Sloppy on stage.
@117Lovergirl lol you yelled at your poor sister for me telling her to go fuck herself cause helter skelters better than this song lol? Tell her sorry for me hahaha
@Spartan54232 I'm sorry but I do not remember commenting that, I think my sister wrote that I had to yell at her for going on my site I'm sorry if i caused you any trouble, and I don't want to argue with you!
I think in the late 80's, Townshend was trying to divest himself of his rock star/guitar hero image. I think he figured if he switched to acoustic, he could get away with not having to do all the gymnastic stuff he was famous for in the 70's and early 80's.
okay, ive seen a lot of comments about simon. hes a phenom, but this is also one of the best vocal performances ive heard from the group during that period. harmonies are real good. im fine with petes phobia if everythings gonna sound that tight, haha
I remember being very worried about Pete's ears on this tour. How did he overcome the problem? When I saw them 18 months ago he played loud, really loud electric.
Yeah, I remember seeing the drummer on some video for a Pete solo song on USA MTV and thinking yeah! no more Kenney- fine for the Faces, but always seemed flummoxed by the Who style. I really don't remember much of the eighties- and I never saw this line up- did they tour?
I saw them in 80, their 1st US tour with Kenney in Tempe, Arizona. We downed two 2 huge bottles of wine and entered the arena, smoked my girlfriend's parent's stuff and saw about 20 min of the show. Then the power went out during a huge thunderstorm. The arena was packed, and just as everyone was getting edgy and HOT- a pale spotlight revealed a "workman" sweeping up the stage- it was Pete! We didn't want to miss anything, so we stayed in- missing the chat and autographs in the parking lot!
@saguaroboy Toured the US and the UK in 89. Simon Phillips was the drummer and he'd worked with Pete since 1979 and toured with his Deep End band (along with Dave Gilmour) in 1985 and 86.
Entwisle with Simon was an amazing and scary combination. I saw 6 shows of the '89 tour and I would just look through the binoculars at the two of them and want to cry. It was that good.
This performance is much better than the one from the 89 Tour the year before. It has a lot of more energy for the same gang of people playing the same song arrangement a year later.
Reading some of the comments on this I reckon just to be up there doin it is a buzz getting money chicks and having fun how cool is that

The extra guitarist is probably Steve Steven, who toured with them for while as the main lead guitarist.

This comment has received too many negative votes show
This could have been so good, if only they had a front man with a bit of charisma, who could sing. Instead they got Roger Daltry.
numbskullandy 4 years ago
This would seem to be a '90s appearance, since you can see both the current and '70s Daltry in his face.
Great song, regardless!
