A friend just sent me this and yes we were there. Right now I'm emailing other pals trying to piece our collective memories from that evening. It was the only song he played about 50 times or more over and over. They enticed us with free beer and shrimp to be in the audience. That fella at the end probably felt the way most of us did after that night. I oftened wondered if that film was ever used. This took place on Stock Island at a bar called the Green Lantern Inn I believe.
you failed when your little fingers thought before your soiled little brain told them what to do......do us all a favor and .....can ...you....say...this......d i s a p p e a r.....bye bye
Hey mike...I grew up with Jimmy's wife in Columbia...she was a cheerleader at AC Flora HS...most spectacular butt ever and drop dead gorgeous...she got pissed at the party atmosphere in Key West but I'm glad they're back together....Jimmy and Jane are two really
nice people who care for the planet and use their fortune and influence to advance good works.
We can argue whether Jimmy was at his best on "White Sport Coat and a Pink Crustacean" or "A1A" or "Beach House on the Moon" but the point is moot..he's just fun to listen to and transports your musical brain to a different reality...one particular harbor when you need to visit if only for a few moments. His concerts are always with 35,000 of your best friends you just met and you all know the words.
Aero...hope you do....Tony passed away last year (RIP brother) but that is the original Sloppy Joe's and a shrine to all that weird, wicked and depraved....and isn't that what Key West is all about anyway?
As for Jimmy selling out, I think that's just wrong. He....like A-Rod...does some wonderful things for our community and for progressive causes generally. He saved the manatee from extinction. What species have you saved lately?
you could say he sold out. but merchandise is so over the top it could only be self parody. his music stayed reflective and entertaining throughout. he just become happy after moving to florida but if you listen to cumberland/down to earth there is an edge that could have been great. i think that neil young is a better example of where things could have gone if he had maintained that edge. i have been a fan since i was 3 years old (35 years ago) and it has been a GREAT pleasure .. thanks jimmy
disregard that stupid comment. So what if JB "sold out" or not i bet there are a lot of people out there that would have done the same thing. besides it's about the music so just enjoy the stuff you like, and go look for the 80's gems there out there.
My mom listened to Buffet while she was pregnant with me, after her first son she decided to lay back with all the rules of parenting. She calls me her jimmybuffet son Sure my brother gets better grades, and makes more money. But he has no idea on how to deal with stress. Im only 19 but i know that i can find comfort in knowing that imagination, lifestyle and a little juicy fruit is all one needs to smile every day. im 19 and i intend on using buffets music as a character building tool for life
Wow! Strong opinions ,no? Say what you want i still like Jimmy's stuff even if he did put out some not so great material in his long career. Go see 'em live and tell me he sucks. Not many artists have been around as long as Jimmy! And brought so many cool songs to the Parrothead nation.Who else has been allowed to play Fenway Park?
I aint a beach bum, i live in Stevens point wisconson, i walk through 2 feet of snow to get to my NR classes. But the emotions brought forth by jimmy buffet, and the idea of you can be anywhere your mind will take you is what keeps me alive, and builds who i am. Through salt stained pants and snow soaked boots, winburned faces, and blistered hands, all it takes is one shot of quervo and some jimmy buffet songs to put me on a beach in the bahamas.
Selling out.....a question I've been torn with for years, and I've been a fan since 1977. First of all, by all accounts, Jimmy was always ambitious, he even too voice lessons when he lived in Key West. The bottom line is, do I still like the music? And yes I do.
Amen parrothead! Just because jimmy has made a fortuine on his lifestyle doesn't mean he's a sellout that means he is supported and I will gladly contribute! Jimmy is going strong and will always stick to a sailors code. Hes an activist and a supporter of all things he believes in! God bless him and all the parrotheads young and old!
Early on Jimmy said he would never sell out but, alas, he did. The Jimmy I remember is the one I saw at the Bottom Line in NYC back in the early 70's where he was second fiddle to a band called Pure Prairie League! After his opening, he stumbled to the bar and had some kind words for me and my buddy. Jimmy will always be the first two LP's to me. Thanks for posting, "TankedPyrat", these clips are sacred!
gbwerbyjr, I think what people mean is that Jimmy could have been very rich without all the cheesy junk he sells and without the crappy records he put out in the 80s on up just to make a few extra million, which he didn't need. James Taylor, Cat Stevens, and Dan Fogelberg didn't do any of this stuff yet still are wealthy and have tremendous fan support. Jimmy's early music speaks for itself and he didn't need to become the Haliburton style singer-songwriter money machine he's become today.
In 79 I was in the front row for a Buffett show. After a selection of poorly written but catchy tunes like "Margaritaville" from Latitude/Attitude, I called out "Hey, play 'Music For Money'". Buffett replied "I don't play that any more." 'Footprints In The Sand' gave me hope for him, but except for that, nothing since has impressed me. BTW, I first caught him in '74 when he & Jerry Jeff shared a bill. That was a great show!
That's what I call the definition of stage presence- yeah:) That's Jimmy's old crowd before the yuppies came in after "Margaritaville" and made him a rich cliche. His stuff from the 70s is awesome, but the 80s and newer stuff was really sub-par to me. He lost his hunger and his music suffered badly. Jimmy Buffett was like a tropical Bob Dylan in the 70s lol.
The definition of a dummie is one who's stupid and can't read, and you obviously didn't read his comment through jerkoff. He said Buffett's music went down hill in the 80s, not the 70s. You must be one of those "Greatest Hits" yuppies he mentions cause you seem awfully offended:)
Friggin awesome! My favorite Buffett song.
