How Todd Rundgren influenced is this song? I would say TOTALLY.... If I didn't know this song was written by Alan Tarney I would swear Todd had something to do with it..... GREAT SONG !!!
Every performer messes up, c'mon! Number one, Cliff's voice has changed with age and the song is in a key too high for his range. Second, it looks like he didn't rehearse; something distracted him to the point where he messed up the lyrics so badly that the show had to edit it out. Finally, Cliff has been getting a little 'odd' as he's been aging. Kinda loco. But he's in his 60s and the nuttiness might just his trying to act young.
Okay, one more thing and I am leaving this alone! Don't mean to hog space or anything, but, maybe it's like he said himself once, if he makes a mistake, if he smiles or wiggles his hips, no one seems to care very much. That smile gets me every time, no doubt about it.
Second, far be it from me to criticize a man who has had a career in show business for 50 years or so. What I meant was, Cliff was once always very prepared and his performance was always planned down to the finest detail. He seems to have relaxed an awful lot and is now prone to on stage unpredictability. In this clip, he seem unprepared and is just having fun.
Yeah i agree with the more relaxed Cliff of late, think when very young he did take himself too seriously but then maybe he had to to sustain a career for the time he has.He not so long ago messed up at the start of a duet with one of his backing singers and just laughed it off and started again! What must be in his mind and that of his sisters' also is the sad fact that their very elderly mother suffers with altzeimers (think i've spelt that correctly)must be a worry for them all.
I think also that as you mature you don't worry so much about what others think and hey Cliff is British and we can be a little eccentric as most folks know. His past eccentricities weren't always public knowledge and the press/media has also altered drastically since the 50's and the start of his showbiz career. This conversation will run and run!
Oh yes i see your previous comment now...So does that mean Cliff did forget the words?Or did someone interfere with it to make him look so bad?Sorry i'm having a dozy day??!!
I was hoping against hope that Cliff hadn't been QUITE as bad as i first thought! It doesn't look like a UK audience so perhaps if the audience weren't English speaking they wouldn't notice the errors as much!?Thanks for all your fabulous videos Aleksey please keep them coming.
Cazziekins, I hoped exactly the same thing-that the audience maybe didn't know enough English to know how badly he messed this up. It does make me cringe to hear it and watch it, but I certainly don't think he should be off to the old-age farm just because of this! Not to be saying you do, but it hurts me because you can see on his face the point where he realizes he has screwed this up so badly, but like a real trouper, he goes on. Poor man.
Other than the earlier 'Devil Woman,' Cliff hadn't enjoyed a huge amount of success in the USA. People in the US find it hard to believe that Cliff was the UK equivalent of Elvis Presley in the US.
I think 'We Don't Talk Anymore' was designed specifically for the US market, since its sound was typical US pop in the late 70s.
Another hit followed, then 'Suddenly,' with ONJ was released.
I was VERY surprised when i first came on to youtube that Cliff had any US fans at all!Cliff himself has given up his ambitions in that direction and now says he quite likes being able to go around there without being recognised.Almost 67 is a little late to start chasing chart success!
Oh my gosh, is he almost 67?? Wow. He doesn't look it. No wonder he's also known as the UK equivalent of Dick Clark (the eternal teenager). Of course I'm not sure, but I think only the US market has an issue with older artists (music and stars), so it really gears toward the 'Young Ones.' But Cliff has to be admired.
I meant to say, movie stars. And the discrimination older movie stars seems to affect women more so than men.
At least the UK has a means of formally recognizing entertainers who have contributed in a meaningful way to society. Cliff was knighted, and Olivia Newton-John received a similar accolade, the OBE (Order of the British Empire).
Here in the States, we give them a star on Hollywood Boulevard. But that hardly means anything, since I think even Bonzo, the chimp that starred in films with Ronald Reagan, has one!
Have you seen the clip here on YouTube with Cliff where he is tasting wines and choosing his preference? The goof who is interviewing him keeps trying to get Cliff to say the F word (I won't tell you if he succeeds!). Search for it, using 'Cliff Richard F Word' as search words. I think the clip is only a couple of years old. It's pretty funny.
The goof you mention is a supposedly top chef who is better known for his foul mouth than for his food which is sad.Depending on which version you have seen, the doctored one or the original,Cliff DID NOT say the F word and spent several sleepless nights worrying because people would think he had...bless him!
The clip I saw was rather long and, at the end -- after he poohed his own wine -- it sounded like the chef had finally gotten Cliff to say it -- which I couldn't believe. That chef is a jerk, in my book. Overly proud of himself, yet still needs to denigrate others to showcase his superiority.
It matters greatly to him how he is perceived by his fans, always has, silly really cos if they have stuck with him this long!?...Plus he is a total innocent,Bruce or one of his band had to explain to him the lyrics of Honky Tonk Angel and Cliff reacted by withdrawing it (i'd already got my copy and it didn't corrupt me Cliff!!)!!
Hi again!A friend of a friend who recently saw him in Belgium said that his ambitions towards the US had 'dwindled'.Tho i myself heard him say last year at Sheffield to a few fans from the States 'if you've enjoyed tonight go and tell all your friends'so take your pick!!Can't you find out if he's doing a few low key venues locally like on his last visit over there?
Hiya, Caz! There are more, more 'enlightened ones' USA Fans here. Besides the ZZs, I know others ... some UK expats, Born in the USA ones, from China, From Japan, from PI, a whole United Nations of Cliff Fans living in the USA starving to see him in concert here in America / Canada)
I believe that Cliff deep inside, still wants to make it here... and I pray that he'll.
It is never too late at 68, when you could still have the voice and still carry a tune.
@cazziekins Found it Cazzie. You are right. I kind of wince trying to watch it, which makes no sense, since he is the one who went through it and obviously he survived it just fine. I think we just always want the best for him so we hate seeing him go through anything that is hurtful.
Oh no i can't watch this is too squirmy for me,bless him poor Cliffy!Mind you we're all allowed a bad day now and again and he was word perfect for two hours in concert last November anyhow so it cannot be senility kicking in that quick!?When/where was this perf??
Rainincats, I can say with the utmost certainty and conviction that you are indeed a Cliff Richards fan of the stalwart kind through and through. Might I also add that because of staunch supporters like you Sir Cliff Richards' longevity reigns supreme. Long live Cliff!
You are absolutely right, rebels82, about my being a stalwart and staunch fan--although only for 5 or 6 months now! I haven't had the privilege of watching him over the years, so I have missed a lot. Remembered him from the '70s, then he "disappeared" from the US. I am not ready to give him up when I just found him! Thank God for the internet! There is just something about the man, more than just being a great singer and showman, that makes me want more.
I certainly understand your point, rebels82. I felt sorry and embarrassed for him here, too, but I don't think, based on everything else I have seen him do as recently as this, that he is now a has-been entirely and just making a fool of himself. Heck, I am 17 years younger than him and can't remember what I did last week! I just don't think that 1 or 2 slip-ups such as this are cause for him to throw in the towel just yet. I am not ready to give up on him just yet.
Well, I agree somewhat that Richards is due a few slip-ups now and then. But it reminds me of the aging star athlete who refuses or doesn't know when to retire with grace. The aging athlete, or in this case, the musician like Richards, doesn't know when to throw in the towel and retire. It gets to a point he is just making a mockery of himself (like in this video) and the spectators or his fans (like me) feel sorry for him. How sorry is that.
Well, it is funny, but the poor man has sung and remembered how many songs in his career of almost 50 years, and how many concerts, and how many TV shows? I figure he's due a few slip-ups now and then!

Bin beleidigt! :0)
... aber dass RTL ihn live singen lässt, das ist echt interessant! Cool - wenigstens etwas!

Hi Rainincats (love your name!). You're not hogging space! That we can chat is one of the best features here on YouTube!
I guess my 'odd' and 'kinda loco' remarks need a bit of clarification. First, I'm a big fan of Cliff Richard, and have been for 28 years.

EmmttGlnn2002, the show is not edited. Aleksey just cut out several seconds of a damaged video.
lmj22 4 years ago
Oh! Okay.
Wow, what an excellent edit, then, seeing it is right on the beat and practically unnoticeable, except to those who know the song.
As far as Cliff's lyric lapse, the same applies: I don't think anyone who doesn't know the song by heart would have noticed.
EmmttGlnn2002 4 years ago
The video has been doctored tho and badly re-spliced back together if you watch carefully!

Always hated this song though. No wonder I don't know the lyrics :). Never could understand why it was such a huge hit for Cliff.
