  • I agree she's been on some sort of mellowwww drug all this time to maintain her presence between this world and the ether - there's something going on, and I want a bit of it:)

  • Oh my God, that cord thing she was talking about is something my ballet instructor always told us in order to improve our posture. I mean, she didn't say all that stuff about lightning but that's so interesting.

  • Where did the footage come from.. ? To cool. I am a longtime fan and have a LOT of diff stuff with her but i have nvr nvr seen this! Thx so much for posting.

  • I seriously love this video more every time I watch it. I for one would like to see every single hour of the recording of this album. :)

  • I live 2 minutes away from that church, never knew!

  • This album is a fuckin' MASTERPIECE!

  • Wow! No wonder why Boys For Pele is so powerful!

  • inspiring.

  • i've loved this cd for years, and I've just found out that she was singing in the church down the road from me...lol

  • Right around 2:20 you gotta love Tori's explanation of how the energy finds her. She must have had fun making that album. This was at her height, I think, although the two albums that followed were also amazing!!!!!!!!!! When Tori talks about "current" running through that church, I think it's true for her. She sounds so different on this album than any other time in her career. POWERFUL shit!!!!!!

  • She is quite tipsy. Hilarious and awesome at 2:14.

  • YES. Best record by anyone, ever.

  • 1:08, what song is she working on? Are those unused Caught a Lite Sneeze vocals? Beautiful!

  • @slivertoe i think maybe she's just warming up her voice. it sucks because i would love if she cut all those bits and pieces and put an album together with voice and piano improvisations. i would so buy it right away! she seems so completely inspired and inspiring.

  • I could watch/listen to her playing Caught a Lite Sneeze on the harpsichord at 2:59 every single day and never get tired of it. Listening is only half the ecstasy....to get it all, you have to watch her as well.

  • No offense, Are you for real? Are you kidding me with the 'she is so on drugs'?? That is NOT high on drugs. That is divinely connected to the universe/source. Perhaps she has dabbled in wine drinking and/or other stuff but THAT is entirely connected to source.

  • @shebrksmysiren OH MY LOL ARE YOU FOR REAL

  • @anonybelle Yes, I am totally 'FOR REAL'. Have you ever spoken with her in person? Meet and greets? Yeah.. I am for real. Tori is pretty highly evolved spiritually, and old soul. She is wise. She is a teacher. She is connected to source. Perhaps you don't get it because you are stuck in this 3 dimensional world. That's cool. Keep coming back!

  • @shebrksmysiren I'm a huge Tori fan. I've gone to two shows every tour since Dew Drop Inn with the exception of the recent mini-tour. She even says she was on all kinds of things during the time period. No big deal. Watch Father Lucifer storytellers and she says, "...I was doing drug with a South American shaman." FL is one of my favorite songs ever.

  • tori has so many layers to her soul. i kinda wanna adopt her and at the same time be her child. by far the best artist, substantial.

  • People who don't know her, don't know her. She is music.

  • INANNA!

  • wicklow!! woo

  • i love the little redhead

  • She's supra-intelligent.

  • She was deffo on drugs here, she even makes a spliff motion on the video. And we all know she was on some crazy shit when she made Pele.

  • @columbinegnosis You are so wrong....

  • where do you get she's on drugs? that's how tori is... i get compared to tori and i'm not on drugs.

  • Caught a Lite Sneeze is my number one favorite song EVER, by ANYONE.

  • I'm from County Wicklow! :) I'd no idea that's where she did the Pele recording.

  • The moment somwhere between 5:59 and 6:01, my whole body shivers.

  • "She is so on drugs." Hell yes, she is. And Thank God because that brought us Boys for Pele. Not that I advocate drugged out redheads, but just look at the end result. Working out your demons can create beautiful things. I'm glad she seems happy now in the midst of her family. God bless Tori :D

  • what was that 4:31

  • Love this behind the scenes interview of truly her best album and one of the best albums of all time. Spiritual, organic and just lovely.

  • is that hawley with the long hair? the face kind of looks the same

  • @BelMagick nah...I think thats him at 2:54 though in the shorts when they're walking into the church.

  • @lucretia101

i thought it was him at 6:21 but 2:54 is cute if they're walking together

  • Wow... I'm glad I found this...

  • great doc, " boys for pele " is a wonderful album ...

  • this gave me chills.. she's so amazing!

  • Attention Rhino Records:

We want "Boys For Pele" in a 3 Disc Set.

    Disc 1 The ORIGINAL ALBUM...UNALTERED.

    Disc 2 The Remixes/Reversions, Outtakes, B-Sides & Rare Edits

Disc 3 DVD of the BOYS FOR PELE Press Kit, The RAINN Concert, Rare Live Footage and Videos from The BFP ERA.

  • LE i smy fave CD, but Pele is thje second and pretty much revolutionary. One of the most unique pieces of pure art I have ever seen/heard. Tour and everything. Pure, raw emotion is the entire era. I love that 3 disc set. A genius idea for a genius time!!!!

  • I don't think shes on drugs, she just has this amazing energy going on there like she always has had and an amazing voice to match.

  • I love love Tori. This is my favorite album

  • Oh my god, thank you for this video.

It made me love Tori Amos even MORE.

    If thats even possible.

    TORI AMOS IS A GODDESS.

  • Boys for Pele is the best album of all time. Tori Amos is the best musician of all time. Just my opinion, but whoever says that Tori has no talent shall be kicked in the face by moi.

  • @TearInTheirHands yessss. :)

  • @TearInTheirHands ABSOLUTELY AGREE. BFP is tori at her very best.

  • some artist don't need drugs to be this great

  • 5:45 - 6:00. brilliant.

  • @delasoul1 omg, totally. Amazing.

  • Ah! I love you, Boy for Pele!

  • How is she annoying and pretentious? I don't find her to be either of those things.

  • I'm just curious. Where do you see the pretension?

  • her voice. oh my lord her voice.

  • I don't think she's on drugs, I think its ego, which is good, we need more women comfortable with a strong ego, she was writing good music at this time

  • well, she is a kook but that's why those who love her really do. She is pure talent and a very emotional and spiritual woman, very smart also. God, wouldn't it be boring if she was like everybody else?

  • "There's an instinctive skill that you develop if you make something your passion and your life." Totally.

  • Her voice is so comforting!!!!

  • I love this woman, forever and always! She is a true genius and prodigy! And, just wonderful!!!!

  • Thor i AmoR

  • I'm pretty sure that is her now-husband Mark at the sound/engineering board towards the middle of the bit - they met while she was recording this album... my favorite album of all times, btw... the last part of this video when she's playing parts of the donut song - magic....

  • I remember seeing this play at The Disney Store back in 1996. Can you imagine? They had this big screen they played various promotional video on, and there she was wailing away in a church, above all the cartoon merchandise. Perfection.

  • This only deepens my love for this amazing women.

  • this video is so inspiring to me. What an amazing person...

    tori for ever !

  • She is such a visionary and it totally works.

  • I have not seen this in a long time. She is so insightful.....it is scary! Thanks for the video uploads!

  • Man, the part where she's talk about the string makes me think 'wow...she's nuts' and then simultaneously feel incredibly jealous that I don't feel what she does or when I do play and feel that feeling, that I could never express as she does.

  • 02:14 Under the pink...?

  • love the caught a lite sneeze piece in here. One of my fave songs. I was disappointed she didn't play this live this past tuesday when I saw her live! but i would of been even more disappointed because she doesn't bring her harpischord along either... why!??? -__- i still love you tori <3

  • wow apparently no one liked my comments about the song being about "horny nuns" from a couple months ago and marked them down or something. first of all, it was a playful comment, not meant to be offensive, and second of all, LISTEN TO HER OWN EXPLANATION OF THE SONG. nuns evoking inanna out of sexual desire (horny nuns, like i said, jokingly) is WHAT SHE SAYS. for gods sake people, tori herself is a funny and sexual person, stop being so conservative.

  • well i guess i can be about horny should be nuns ......... cuz like the only boys all around just want to use and fuck us but i guess the priests would 2 but then even still girls don't like us..... idk whatever....

  • snow can wait...i forgot my mittens

  • boys for pele was my favorite 2 i loved little earthquakes and underthepink but theres something about pele it just so multidimesional theres a essence captured on this album thats passionate and otherwordly if you dont believe in faeries not the tinkerbell shit but the essence of what is fay the muse creative subconsious whatever you wanna call it listen to this record its deffinatley in the room

  • boys for pele is her best, and my favourite album. it made me and helped realize and understand a lot of things...about myself, others...

and i really think that this album is something intimate to everyone

  • I completely agree

and it has changed me completely

  • anyone who's a singer would understand what she's on about...singing, real singing..is better than sex, its like heaven is channeled thru the top of your head and out yr mouth...awesome.

  • I think Boys for Pele is a testament that if you have to act a little "crazy" to get those sounds...maybe we should all act a little crazy, because Boys for Pele is simply a.m.a.z.i.n.g.

  • @astronumerous so very well put. Creation happens on the edge of this reality and another and if people aren't comfortable enough with themsleves enough to acknowledge that then its their fault their loss. THUMBS UP!!!

  • She's just being real and honest. If that's "losing it" then so be it. Some people's views of human behaviour are VERY VERY narrow.

  • @annaewf: She's a free spirit. That's what she is. And I feel that some are afraid of that.

  • She's just a really cool creative person. I'm not into this whole "she's a goddess, she's channelling the spirit of the eternal feminine" etc but I really love her music. If she's on drugs she seems like she was really having fun with it.

  • I remember this period. She was like in all the interviews I read. It did seem like she was losing it a bit. Don't know what was going on in her personal life or whatever, but there was something a little unhinged there. Doesn't mean she wasn't still creative and doesn't mean it was all drugs, but there was something weird about this period. Maybe she was letting crazy take a spin.

  • cool interview - Boys For Pele is one of my all time favorite albums - thanx for posting this!

  • I hope that someday Tori will finally get the recognition she deserves.. I hate that she's written off by most people as simply kooky rather than recognized for her genius.

  • tori = <3

  • the current she's speaking of is the earth magnetic fields knots on which most of the churches are built on. One of the most powerful "feeling" may be felt in France (cathedrale de Reims).

  • She's not on drugs. She just has strange muses.

  • I love her, and I love that this makes sense to me! hahaha she's brilliant!!!!!!

  • Comment removed

  • I dont think Tori is on drugs I think she is extremely intelligent and clever and her mind works in ways that not everyone will understand. Im not saying she hasnt tried drugs as she has mentioned when she has had her spiritual journey's and such but i think this is REALLY WHO SHE IS!!!! and i love it.

  • I concur. She's a shamaness....she knows aspects about music, art, and life that we fail to see day to day. Can you imagine carrying around that awareness and not being able to release it?? She releases it, but she's also smart about how she releases it. I love this album and feel compelled to listen to it again after watching this.

  • wait a minute... i know i just posted, but that was before i watched the video... is she really saying that caught a lite sneeze is about horny nuns who aren't getting enough sexual satisfaction from God, so they're trying to invoke female gods for a little action by singing in the church? wtf...

  • Horny nuns? Where the f*ck did you get that idea? Read the f*cking lines! She's invoking Innana, the original archetype of the Great Goddess, the Divine Feminine! Caught A Lite Sneeze is about casting that loss of a man as a casualty. Yes, it happened but the Great Goddess has many lovers. It's not going to destroy her being. It's about recovery. It's about the limitless strength of the feminism. It's about the unshakable spirit of a lioness, the ability to survive!

  • wth is ayuaska? "she is so on drugs" LOOOLL

  • Pele by far was the best album she made, of all time. I grew up with it, and still listen to it time and time again

  • yoru so so right

  • when I go back and listen, I love Pele but I have to say I think her best ever will always be Little Earthquakes. Just my two cents.

  • Tori is such an inspirational singer/ composer/ performer. She's an amazing woman and so gorgeous!

  • Ah, this is fantastic!.. Boys For Pele is an album that really leaves you in a trance. You fall into that world she created, spinning all kinds of ways.

  • I love the sun glasses, they look like she stole them straight out of her daughter's toy box. Besides it's such a precious glimpse at her living through Boys for Pele.

  • I have always thought and will always think that Tori Amos is a brilliant composer and producer. She has said in interviews that she learned along the way that public is not necessarily interest in hearing an artist at their ultimate. I suspect Pele and other music she composed around this time might have been what she was talking about. She was absolutely on fire in that period. I can only hope she'll be able to bring that level of passion again at some point in the future.

  • This album also changed my life too marcooland, taught me what it was to reclaim my own fire, especially sneeze, talula, damage..... one of the best albums ever made if you ask me.

  • this album totally change my life to see the world

  • ps, she was experimenting with ayuaska, at the time tho but I dont think she's high, just chuffed to be working on the project

  • she's not bi-polar, she was in a dark place at the time with the end of her relationship with Rosse and the first of her miscarriages occurred around this time. She was trying to reclaim her whole self during Pele. I agree it was a fantastic album - my first tori album! She's singing Inanna, bring your son.

  • this is still my favorite album...

  • I think she's bi-polar and she was in her creative element. I totally understand where she is coming from. That Album is the best. Does anyone agree?

  • I agree.

  • Indeed it is. =)

  • I totally agree.

Im having major trouble trying to figure out how to be a woman and what kind of woman I can be without feeling the need to be in a relationship being on my own and being enough. Caught a lite Sneeze is my security blanket lol. I asked Tori to play it in Sept 07 when she was here in Melbourne and she did and I was blown away.

  • Whoah. I never noticed until now that she seems to be singing "Inanna" at 5:45. (Or is this well known? haha Regardless...) I always loved that part, but now it's even more beautiful to me. I always wondered what that was.

  • Wow. Tori was totally wired during this period. Such energy...no wonder Pele turned out one of the greatest albums of our time.

  • well if drugs help write an album this briliant then maybe i should do some drugs too ;) jk

  • WHOA! What a look into that era!

  • I wish she had left the Doughtnut Song

just like it is at the beginning of this video!

    it's incredible

  • She was actually writing part of "Doughnut Song" there at the end (melody of the lyric 'Something's just keeping you numb'). What a little nugget of awesome.

  • Boys For Pele i sgenius.

you know that on Amazon UK the proper version is unavailable.. like it's gonna become one of those collectables that you have to pay 80 quid for it used. So if you have a CD of BFP with Springtime of his Voodoo instead of the dance remix of Professional Widow... look after it!

  • Woah, I just bought that CD and I have the right version! I'm in america though

  • You just don't understand her. It's okay, it's hard for those of lesser intelligence to recognize & understand true genius.

  • She's just talking in intuitive language, whether she's on drugs or not. It's perfectly possible to have a reasonable conversation while on hallucinogens, so that has nothing to do with it.

Wow, I commented a lot. I should go to bed.

  • No matter how many times I watch this...or even listen to her... I am absolute awe.

You have to watch Piano Shopping with her if you haven't already seen it.

  • where is it available? I'm interested in seeing that.

  • Where oh where did you get this?

  • I love that they end it with her in the middle of writing Doughnut Song. I Love Love Love her!

  • I looooooove Tori Amos! She's so awesome.

  • I Love Ireland!!

Been there once and loved it. Next time I go to Ireland I'll go to this church.

  • This was awesome! Thanks so much! Her hair looks so cool in the sunlight against that yellow field!

Does anyone have more footage of the making of Boys For Pele, specifically songs that were recorded in New Orleans?

(Watching this video makes me feel nostalgic...I don't know why...like I want to go back in time and commune with her at the Dew Drop Inn once again...)

  • Dew Drop Inn was awesome--the best time to commune with Tori and fellow EWF!

And yes, I'd love to see Tori in action in New Orleans. The spiritual undercurrent in that city is ridiculously strong; I'd love to see her response to it.

  • *hugs*

  • Does anyone happen to have the record of "caught a lite sneeze", which was recorded in this church? I mean the one without the drums and the chant (at the beginning of the video). That was so awesome...

  • Well, when you think that she is on drugs you don't know Tori. She does her thing and she doesn't care about what somebody could think about it.The same in this interview/video.She wants to really show us what is going on with her when she is writing her songs.I mean who told you that she could be on drugs. That's kinda stupid. That's Tori and Tori is wonderful!

  • she freely admitted during the making of boys for pele that she was taking LSD regularly

    that's tori on drugs

  • realy? I've never heard that before. It's an interesting thing. I feel like it's her best album and her most intense and I was never the one to believe that drugs empower creativity.

  • I think she also alluded to drinking ayhuasca tea when discussing the inspiration for Father Lucifer on VH1.

I think one way to look it is that hallucinogenic drugs are emotionally and psychologically intense experiences, and that emotionally and psychologically intense experiences in general contribute to creativity. Gives you something to write about, just like you can't write the great novel till you've had some life experience, etc.

  • Well, I'm no druggie but there's no question that drugs empower creativity. They can't turn an uncreative person into a creative one, but they open your mind to what's going on INSIDE your mind more than normal.

  • Um...she may not have been under the influence in this particular video, but she's freely discussed her hallucinogen use more than once.

  • Please, tell me about the currents again.

  • I love her to death but she's such a wack-a-doo. Such a goddess.

  • Rofl, she's different, and it's good it makes her music the best.

  • I've felt that before! She's really totally connected with the `cosmic inspiration stream' if you know what I mean. She's a real musician, very very creative very authentic. Thank you Tori Amos.

  • she's really slacking in her game as of recent, but my GOD she was really bringing it home in BFP...And LOL at her being on drugs...she's just Tori.

  • well said

  • WOW. that "Inanna" chant sends chills all through me :|

  • Yeah...i had no idea that's what she was singing before I watched this; I thought they were just atmospheric vocals. New dimensions all the time. : )

  • i love how shes still amazing even when I have no idea what shes talking about. I do love the CALS clips.

  • I love the part where she talks about the silver string and the connection she feels with everything when she plays. I think maybe that's what most people want to feel in their lives. A connection. For her it's the piano and music, for someone else it may be painting. It is just a matter of finding your "silver string"...finding your passion. Thank you for sharing this video.

  • Go to Ireland. It is so worth it.

  • i live there, only bits of it are worth it ...

  • so good, its scary

  • I simply adore this video. Especially the parts where she's recording the backing vocals for CALS. But also the part where she's 'writing' Doughnut Song, and the part where she goes to play the harpsi and do a bit of CALS. Love this Tori. Don't always understand what she's talking about, but you can really feel her passion.

And of course, Pele is my favorite album, so this video is fantastic.

  • Does she say anything at the backing vocals for CALS????

  • "Inana" and "Bring your song"

  • Boys For Pele made me throw away about 1/2 of my CD collection. Blew my mind.

  • "bring your son" obviously...I'm a spaz when it comes to typing....

  • Tori has admitted to doing drugs but so what! Most things we take nowadays are drugs! I just think you are all halfwits, the woman speaks in analogies and her music is all analogies, if you don't have the intelligence to interpret that then why comment on something you do not understand?

  • anyway, she was never an addict, because she used ayahurasca, which is a quite a drug hard to archieve...

  • Yeah, plus you don't really get addicted to hallucinogens very easily anyway. I generally feel a decreased desire to do them for months after I've had some.

  • No no the author hit the nail on the head, she is on drugs. She knows she is on drugs. There is definatly drugs in this equasion.

  • If you have a chance to go to Ireland, go to this church on Sunday. It is an amazing experience.

  • also, tori is NATURALLY 'in her own world.' she views the world in a magical way--so do many people who do NOT use drugs (and i suspect she doesn't use many drugs, if ANY, these days.) she got some insight from ayahuasca, peyote, other hallucinogens (mostly plants); she learned her lessons and likely doesn't need these experiences anymore. personally, i don't use drugs, and i think much the way she does. she's just a creative spirit, and very spiritual.

  • I agree w/ you, Tobias (that's my cat's middle name!) Thanx for sticking up for Tori! There's just some people who won't ever understand Tori because they can't understand her magic, and that's alright, but they really shouldn't be so down on her just 'cos they don't get her, ya know?
