@dojodin I dont like the bassline (as its too resonant and acidy) with percussion I think you need to spend more time,(try adding some tops from sample packs maybe?),track cld be better is all* u just need good quality samples, also if ur compressing all ur drums thats not a good idea, They sound less prenounced ( I still like sidechaining the closed hats to go along with basslines,) The velocity on ur pads are all over the place,(midi) & *tip=automate ur compression ratio, Works great!=)
i have followed a bunch of tuts, tried all different ways to sidechain, but it will not work for some reason!! Any ideas on what problem i might be having??
@BigKnobInYourFace Thanks. I totally felt your pain. I spent something like 5 hours figuring it out in Logic after reading The Dance Music Manual's description of sidechaining. It's taken around a year of absorbing more knowledge about audio and I'm still left with a few questions about compression. Just keep at it and it'll all make sense one day. I'm still learning....
I'm so happy I found this video. I was expecting a long, long search for this information, as I didn't even know it was called "pumping". I just knew it sounded like "woosh woosh" but I didn't think typing that into youtube would work out.
Hey, this may be a stupid question but I'm new to Logic and I was wondering about outputs. Whenever I try to create a new software instrument, what do you have as your output when creating a software instrument, because I have mine on Stereo Output but that isn't working for me...I am unable to change the outputs when I have that selected so any advice as to what to put my output to or changing preferences somewhere that I need to know about?
Thanks, I believe I was using all Ultrabeat kits. 909 for kick and snare...probably one of the house kits for hats. I got the cymbal from my friend Subconscious samples from one of his hardware synths...message me your email if you'd like the sample.
@Deph11s Use EXS24 and open up the 909 library. I use a separate track for each sound. One for kick, one for snare...etc. However, Ultrabeat also has many features that sometimes makes it a better option. I would read the manual for Ultrabeat and learn how to use it properly. It does a lot of cool things. Check out my blog for a tutorial on making your own 909 kick. Or just search "do your kick drum samples suck" and it'll come up. Thanks for checking out the video
why don't you just create a new track with a kick and put it to no output and then just put the sidechain to that track on the compressor.....maybe you like doing it that way?
You can do it that way with a kick on an audio track. The way I did it used a MIDI track. I suppose it is easier to bounce out your MIDI kick to an audio file, create an audio track, then set it to no output, and put your compressor's side chain to the other track. Very cool...thanks for pointing that out.
Sweet tutorial!! But i got one question, at 0:35 when you start the song, you have an alternating synth going (maybe appregiated)....WHAT WAS THAT?? Cause that sounds sweet and I would like that sound effect(I'm new to Logic/Mainstage cause I've been using it with my band since Mid-August and I'm still learning)
Thanks for the comment. Glad you like it. I just used a stock preset on Sylenth. What you heard is just some arpeggating on the synth...so in reality I'm only holding down 1 note and the synth does the rest. You can set it to arpeggiate to whatever notes you want. It also works with chords.
About 2.10 you put the output of your kick to a bus track. The output of that bus you have no output. I understand side chain compression, although if your kick is going to a bus with no output, how did you get the kick to sound later on in your tutorial Do you have a send on the kick track also, or do you have a separate duplicate kick track?
I have an aux track via ultrabeat, output i.e bus 1, with bus 1 output 1-2, then by bass track have a comp on and sidechain that bus 1
I have 2 kick tracks running. 1 is has no output, as well as the bus it goes to. The other is the same kick with output. You usually want to use the same kick so it will duck the track with the same amount of time that your kick sound lasts. You'll have 2 kick tracks with whatever DAW you use when sidechaining. Good luck! Let's hear some tunes!
hey, I posted a video response of a song I'm working on - I did exactly this method for the pad sidechain, and so you, and eveyrone else can see how it meshes together
Nice tutorial and ever nicer mix! I'm still a little confused about how to use all of the automation tools that logic has. Volume is easy ofcourse, but sometimes the settings seem to stick as I try to use different filters. Perhaps you can make a tutorial of your process.
What exactly do you mean "stick"? I can make a tutorial on how I do my automation for synths, and plug ins etc. Coming your way soon! Thanks for the comments. be sure to subscribe so you'll know when the video comes out!
Cool beans -- oh yeah I'm all subscribed. Its just that when I start trying to do automation with different filter settings I can't even find my way back to the volume, or to make edits on the settings I already set up. I'm just not used to doing it so glad you will make a vid. You should post more full mixes with a link to download the MP3 like I do. Some people will probably buy, because they're good!
Not finished? Well Wow that really doesn't help you man. I know trance songs are long but sometimes you just gotta do an ABA format with the last A being a little different than the first. Most of my remixes aren't even three minutes long. I gotta finish up my stuff so i can get them into libraries like Pump Audio and others to make some money from em.
Hey bud, I posted a short response on how to automate and get to your automation parameters on someone else's comment. It starts out A - is the shortcut for automation. Let me know if you have any other questions!
Someone else had the exact same question after you. Check out the responses for the answer. It starts out saying A- is the shortcut for automation. Let me know if you have any other questions!
I'll make a video, but until then you can try this. A - is the shortcut for automation. When you first open it up, you'll see volume. You can select a different parameter to automate in the drop-down. If you can't find what you are looking for, which isn't unusual, set your automation mode to touch or latch. This will record any automation you input as the song plays. Make sure your MIDI controller is set to move whatever you want to automation (cutoff or something), or just use your mouse.
After you record the automation, go back to the drop down with all of the parameters. You'll immediately notice a short list of the parameters that are used. It'll probably be volume, and whatever you automated. Click on it, and it'll show your "line" which you can then edit by hand with the pencil or the tool of your choice. Let me know how it goes!
Hey bud, I will make a video just for you. Give me a day or so. Short answer though is look towards the top right you have 2 drop down, your first one is probably an arrow. You should probably drop down the second one and you'll have a the cross fade tool.
Hold Apple and then drag over the area you want to fade. You can cross fade 2 regions or just fade in or out. Also, the hard way is to use automation, but fade tool is your best bet. Try it out, I'll get a video up in the next day or 2. Let me know if you have any other question/requests!
It doesn't matter what instruments you use as long as you have your ins and outs routed properly. Make sure the duplicate kick track out is set to bus x. Set the compressor on the track you have your pad on and and make sure the sidechain is on and taking input from bus x. Try and run through the steps listed in the video description, again. You may be missing a small detail that is preventing the whole thing from working properly. Good luck, and let me know how it goes.
great video thanks. I'm trying to side chain my kick to an osolater. so when it hits I get the boom. but the oscolater won't stop sounding. Is there a proper way to do this?
Not sure I completely understand your question. If you haven't already figured it out see if you can explain it again and I'll see what I can do. Chow!
