Hi, I bought that same stove for many of the same reasons as you did. And I recently posted a video of our experience with it. See our YT channel for a short video. Thanks.
Hi Rich! Thanks for the great video. I have grown up with a wood stove so your comments about firetending being an art are spot on. The Oakwood, however, is designed very differently from the stove I grew up with. With the old stove, the flu was the way you controlled heat output. I seem to be having a learning curve with the Oakwood. Even though I heat the flu initially and open it to load, I continue to get smoke in the house each time I open the door. Suggestions?
@KnitterMomof2Thank you for the comments. Are you opening the top door or the front door? Either way it may be a matter of poor draft up your chimney. I noticed that when it's colder outside I get better draft. And lately it's been a little warm. Not sure where you are from. Always remember to keep the fire dome area clear. It's in the center and rear of the firebox. I also get some smoke in the house occasionally when I open the front door. It seems to me this is because the fire is to forwar
@KnitterMomof2 Thanks for the reply Rich. I am in central NH, foothills to the White Mnts. Out of habit I always load from the front. My other problem is we never seem to get the stove "hot", above 200 unless the damper and air valve are open. We do have a double wall pipe. Whenever I close the damper the fire seems to virtually go out, even with a rocking coal bed. Our dealer has been no help. I will try out your suggestions as well as Harmon online. Thanks!
Rich, Great vid. I am shopping right now for a woodstove for my raised ranch, 2 floors, 2600 sq. ft. How much did you pay for the stove? I live in NY a few miles from the Canadian border. Winters are cold here... What is the climate where you are and how well insulated is your house? In other words, I am trying to get a feel for what I can expect out of a stove. Thanks, Joe
@joetherocku2ube Hi Joe, Thanks for the commnets. Well, I live in northern New Jersey. Winters can be cold here also. My house is around 2300 sq. feet or so. This stove is my only heat source This stove could probably heat your house as well. Since it's a raised ranch, I would put the stove in the base ment and maybe cut some registers in the floor the allow the heat to rise.Remove any insulation you may have in the ceiling of your basement . Email me at rprint@ptd.net i can give you more info
Rocket mass heaters people come on....!! 2 hours burn 20 hours heat, We need to add lot of mass, I used to burn about 5 chord over winter, with my rocket mass heater I burn less than 1!!! Great vid thanks for posting, xxx from the UK
I have an oakwood purchased less than 1 yr ago this stove is a piece of junk . I have to run wide open to burn rep came out and checked draft and everything said it was a stove issue he would have to pick it up and take to shop . owner calls tells me I have to bring down . so in disgust I took it out put my cheap Drolet in made it through the winter I installed it again after changing flue a bit same crap called another dealer we shall see. Harman should have a direct line to speak to a rep.
@pipesanddrums2004 Sorry to hear you had a bad experience. And I to wasn't to thrilled with my dealer. I agree that you should be able to speak directly to someone at Harman, when your not happy with the dealer your using. I will tell you that Harman has a Facebook page, where I have seen unhappy customers reach out to them and get some pretty quick responses directly from Harman. They care very much about their reputation and will go to great lengths to make the customer happy. You shoud try th
@richprint29 I just talked to the factory direct the other day checking on parts and they were very helpful just ask for parts dept. Just got to dig a little you'll find the number.
@NightSailor Well your burn time will depend on a couple factors. Firstly, the wood. Is it a good hardwood such as Oak, Hickory, Birch, Maple, or Ash? Then is the wood dry? Wet wood will not perform well in any measure. Secondly is your draft correct on your stove? Thirdly, Is the stove set right as far as the air you are allowing into it? Too much air and the stove will burn for a shorter time. ( But very Hot ). You have to have all three of these things right. It is somewhat of an art.
Hopefully it will stay together for you. I know there has been much discussion on this over at hearth.com forums if your looking for info. Vermont Castings has a similar combustion package as Harman and they are having the same issues.
@wobdee1 Yes I have checked it. It's starting to fall apart. This thing is one of the few things I'm not happy with. The dealer never talked about this feature of the stove at all. Now I know why. But doesn't seen to effect the stove performance. Thank you for your comment
I own the TL-300. It has a similiar combustion package as the oakwood. Paid for itself in around 1 year. We burn the stove 24-7 from late Oct till April. Living in North Centeral MN we can get really cold, last week we got to -35, this morning we were at -20 and this stove handles the weather and as long as I am burning seasoned oak the propain very seldom kicks in.
One thing with an EPA stove is that your wood must be seasoned. If not the stove will not run effeciently.
Thanks for this helpful review Rich. I just looked at this stove and the Harman TL300 today. I don't have an issue with the look of steel stoves, but now from your advice I have to look into the durability of them. Can you tell me what area you live in? I am in central PA and want to compare your 4-5 cord season to my climate to estimate my wood needs. Thanks again! Tom
@troutful I live in Northern NJ. So we get the same weather. You can expect to use between 4 and 6 cords of wood. 4 on the low end and 6 on the very high end. Thats if you use the stove as your primary heat source. We burn on and off in Sept. Oct. Nov. But in December we are on a constant burn until March. Thanks for your comments, I'm glad the video was helpful.
I liked your video and believe much of what you say!! I just can't bring myself to spend 2400.00 on a woodburner when I can get one at Tractor Supply or Lowes for under a 1000.00. I know you get what you pay for, but Harman stoves are 3 or 4 times as much as other stoves.
You also mentioned about a 300.00 part not covered under warranty and to be sure that ashes were clear from the bottom. I thought Harman stoves automatically let the ash sift through to the ashpan?
Thanks so much for this video! You're spot on about the confusion factor, there are lots of mfr brochures but not so much available from satisfied customers. I'm glad to hear about yours. The fire screen thing looks cool for now and then too.
I'm in the metro Detroit area and in a densely populated suburban neighborhood. I want this stove in case my natural gas system fails (city wide) or the price skyrockets. Plus I like the thought of being "off the grid". Thanks again.
@webcompanion Your quite welcome. Thank you for your comment. Being off the grid is definetly a good thing. This stove does the job, good luck and keep in touch if you end up getting one. Email me if you have any questions about using it. Burning wood for heat is a bit of an art. I'd be happy to help til you get the hang of it.
@rootmagot1 Your welcome. Let me know how you make out if you get one. Also if you have any questions using it, feel free to email me.at rprint@ptd.net.
