hey im thinking about picking up the mac pro for college. From your experience with it, would you recommend the mac pro for college student living in a dorm? My main concern is that it is to large and bulky to handle versus a macbook pro, which is easily portable but lacks the hardware to game. Money is not an issue, but i rather not spend 2,500+ on something that would cause me problems.
In my experience people that hate Mac's do so because they are expensive or because they cant play their PC games on them. Well yes they are expensive, but I have gone through 4 PC's and 2 laptops over 10 years because they have just died on me which I can put at around £3500. I have an original iMac G3 from 2001 that still without any updating runs faster than my mums 2008 Windows laptop. And as for games, you can run Windows on a Mac, and it will probably run faster to!!!
@theBIGrm macs will never run windows as good as a pc can if you compare it to a pc with the same specs. not comparing an imac to a laptop. there was NOTHING TO LOAD in 2001 anyways lmfao
This video aside, the Mac Pro OWNES a PC anyday. Just look at the inside! A PC's inside is a mess, nobody can deny that! And there are so many wires in a PC its almost impossible for a novice to tell what goes where. Also a Mac Pro makes it amazingly easy to install new components. Also it should be noted that whilst a PC will cost 500 and the same spec Mac 2000, the Mac OS has been made to work with the components.

@theBIGrm An idiot shouldn't be messing inside his computer, a custom build computer now is about twice - 3 times as good as the latest mac for under half the price. It's easily upgradable and mac can't do anything linux / windows can't...
This is the most retarded video I've ever seen. I use both Mac (MB Pro) and PC and the only difference between your Mac Pro and my Custom is the modular design in the Mac Pro vs. the standard design in my Coolermaster case. Other than that, you're basically paying over 2x more for that Mac Pro when you're basically using it as a Custom, swapping out the parts, etc. What Apple calls "innovation" has existed on the PC market for years. Btw, OSX can be installed on any machine easily.
My Core i7 Gateway FX 6800-01e cost way less and I bet my performance is close if not better than the 2006 MAC Pro's, plus I have 12GB of DRR3 and my OS's Windows 7 and Ubuntu 10.04 are on a SSD I also have dual Radeon 5850's and with the upgrades its still a lot cheaper that the MP.

Dude, I'm very jealous! 27" iMac AND a MacPro. I'm not trying to be an asshole but what do you use them for? Are you a media professional or something?...
first no i cant see the lock because one the cabinets covering it and two your covering it with your hand and second aww look its like a little home for your hdd and ram and other crap that you are showing off why dont you just go make ur little osx buddy club sign somewhere else because nobody wants to hear it and thank you (unclespinnydervish) why wouldnt they just waltz out the door with your $50000 peice of garbage.
I was just going through your vids and found this ...I like the mac pro its a BEAST!!. I wish i can afford that but I am getting a new imac its a base model but I have used it in the store and it was better than any computer i have ever used. but I have been a pc user for a long time and I'm almost 15 . when I stumbled on your vids it helped me decide to go to mac. thanks
This guy needs a helmet . An i7 even on Windows will beat your core 2 based Xeons. And I am a Mac user but I like all computers. Windows 7 is sweet best MS OS yet
@PlopDropvideos I agree , I use my MBP most of the time but I do also have a i7 Gateway FX desktop and I do like the Mac pro's but for the price you could get a PC with everything. I would rather have a Alienware aurora or area 51 the engineering is just as good as Apple and Its made to game hard for that price.
No lock needed, anybody breaking in my house to steal parts would rather grab the unit, dont sling that "taking it out the house" because that's what laptops are for. PC's have been built for half the price of the Mac Pro while getting 30% more performance, Apple marks up hardware like crazy ($200 to add an extra video card that cost $110 retail). And also you can rig it up as a Hackintosh.
.
only hardware deal apple offers is the 27" iMac and MacBooks. everything else is a ripoff on price
wow. just wow. amazing machine. i didnt even realize how great it was. me being the user i am and the needs i have im going to stick with imac and macbook mainly for looks and its what fits my needs but the mac pro is definetly still an amazing machine
you are such a sour person i mean really, yes the mac is a very very good computer i use them but no need to be so disrespectful to dell computers and what not
yeah so im dual booting snowleopard on my hp PAVILION DV4 1514x laptop and its pretty much in every single way imaginable better than buying a mac alone. besides the fact that i paid 550 for this wonderfly powerfull machine( wich was discounted from 700 on black tuesday) i also have full advantage of windows 7 ultimate and then when im feeiling frisky i just switch over to snow leopard. : ) just thought i would delight u with that bit of info
I am not going to deny it, that is an impressive machine. Ball-busting specs, and is a helluva lot neater then any other computer I have ever opened up. This makes my 3-month old computer look like a commodore 64.
The thing is, the cheapest mac pro you can get is $2500, and doesn't have anywhere close to those specs, that must have been pretty damn expensive. But if you have thousands of dollars to spend on a computer you want, why not?
I don't need a Mac Pro even though I'm a gamer. I use my PS3 for gaming because computers don't stick to one standard (I'm not saying PC gaming sucks, just that I prefer console gaming). I also don't need a workstation to browse the web or create YouTube videos (besides, its a quad-core Xeon not a quad Xeon). Oh, and I typed this on my Dell, and it is not pissy. And I agree with unclespinnydervish. Who in the fucking hell breaks into a person's house just to steal RAM and HDDs.
"as you can see its got a lock back here, whys that lock on there? so nobody can steal our shit, like harddrives and......*thinking, thinking*.... RAM"
Who the fuck breaks into a house with the sole intention of stealing someones HDD? Based on your logic you stand to lose more by locking it as a thief would simply PICK IT UP and carry it off were he unable to access its insides. Fantastically pointless thing to have right there.
its for if you take your desktop OUT OF THE HOUSE. I guess you never heard of that because you never LEAVE the house. If mat a game convention and go use the bathroom someone could easily pop the case and OWN 14gb of RAM in less than 30 seconds. Go to the store with all that money you save on getting a cheap pc and buy a clue.
@unclespinnydervish it happened to mrweedganmer... he came home at his mothers house and nothing was missing except his hdd which had ubuntu and was incrypted but still... people do it
@unclespinnydervish no what im saying is u can dual boot on a mac with windows and game on mac too. so having a pc for gaming is pointless if i can game on my mac
So, you're touching bare electronics not gouunded with shoes on, wearing a fleece hoodie while on a rug. And the hard drive connectors are touching the rug. And you're resting the ram on paper.
Everything you're not supposed to do. You should at least put that stuff in anti-static bags.
the RAM is on plastic bags and I grounded myself before touching the case. Do you expect computer techs to work without any shoes on or shirt? or do you think best buy has a dress code "no fleece clothes" lol, are you crazy. lol I was very careful. Thanks anyway.
dude no you are fuck tard i have a dell xps 420 with quad core 2 duo 500GB of hard drive and 4 gigs of ram i paid $500 for it. If it had been a mac with all that i would have paid over $2000.with PC you dont have to pay alot to get alot.
That 'pissy' Mac pro, getting its ass handed to it.
The sub-system of the 1366 socket based i7s are different to that i7 you're using and is a lot more useful to vid editors due to the massive difference in bandwidth QPI offers over DMI.
Have this exact same Mac Pro. Purchased it the day it came out in early September 2006. Thus it's three years old. This machine is beautiful. It's fast, it's sweet, and runs fabulously. Will easily keep it another 3-4 years.
MacBeast is clean, well-engineered and so gorgeous that any self-respecting geek can't help but gaze inside it.
PC = Piece of Crap or Play Computer. All PCs look like an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) inside. Mac Pro is a work of art. Soldier on, my friend!
No, we don't have a god damn useless lock on our PC you dumbass. Do you honestly think that stops people from "stealing your shit, like....hard drives...and ram"?? You must be fucking paranoid.
I will take that quad xeon 2006 right now, if he would give it to me as of now, and I am using an early imac 2006 intel core duo, and guess what guys I am using it with final cut studio 3 for all you people yeah it takes 3 hours to render a HD movie, so what but when I get another Imac i7 I will tell you this I rather have a apple computer instead of a dell or custom built PC
yo u r the ultimate mac defender....lol....jus get a gun n shoot everybody dat got a pc lmaoo...but i do agree wit u on everything u say lol...real funni to watch
AppleSoldier I have got to ask. You obviously love MACS. And I will be honest I don't. They have never looked quite right to me. And Apple has never made a mouse, not one, that feels right in my hand. Nor am I a fan of the look and feel of the OS, which is why I use KDE Linux.
But all this draconian you most love the Apple POV on what is best aside: what is it about a MAC that makes it and OS X so superior to Linux to justify the 70%-150% extra cost of a MAC to that of a comparable PC?
this guy is ghetto, cant afford the new apple cash. since u cant afford the new apple stuff, ask steve jobs for an upgrade since u suck his cock and are a best supporter apple product
wow what an ass at the end, probally because boot camp sucks ass playing games, and pc's you could use a lot of hardware when your playing steam and shit.
It uses the same functionality as a regular fan in say your computer, and is there any oil in those fans?
I would think for whoever watches you clean our equipment with a leaf blower would thing "hey thats a good idea, why waste 10$ for 3 cans of air, that becomes weaker if you use it longer, and use a leaf blower. Its way more powerful and I dont have to buy refills for it".
There is a lock on the back so your side panel doesn't fall off and guess what my PC has one too so i guess i don't have to worry about my ram being stolen haha
I don't understand who would need more than a 4870.... Unless you are playing crisis on extra high graphics, I don't know any games require more a 256 mb card.
why need a lock? cause mac pros are in college computer labs and public work places. People will still RAM and hard drives dude. Dont think they wont if they can open it up and pull it out in less than 30 seconds.
All in all I think the 3870 is a BAD ASS card for its time. ATI kills nvidia, i have always said that from the beginning. Now the 5870 is the top dog and all these pc fanboys who was PRAISING nvidia last year and the year before that for the 8800 is now praising ATI. They just like whoever is the fastest. I have always loved ATI, never like nvidia. ATI drivers are SO MUCH more mature for mac.
And the whle point of liking whoever is fastest is geting the most for your money. Nvidia have messed up in the past so have ati, the nv 5 series was turd, the ati 29xx series was turd (which incidently isnt that much different from the 3870 series).
Ati got their shit back together with the 48xx series and have been on a good run as of late.
When it comes to cpus and graphics its pointless being a fanboy of either amd intel nvidia or ati as they all have their good and bad runs.
Getting an industrial printer to work properly on OS-X is a pain in the ass. I use a series of printers (Konica-Minolta, HP, Epson & Xerox) for various tasks, but I usually have to send the print job through Windows (XP or 7) because the drivers for OS-X always have quirks...like no account coding.
Sucks when you can't format and send a print job to a $40k printer.
Nah, at work I use a MacPro (2008) with 16GB RAM and 2x2.8 Quad Cores.
But I also have an HP Workstation with similar specs...though it's only got 1 Quad Core. Both machines cost a pretty penny.
I'm a graphic designer & website developer. 1/2 the time I'm creating magazines or advertisements. I typically do my work on the MacPro because I tend to work more efficiently in Spaces. Then I send it through my server to the HP Workstation to calibrate/test and run print jobs
I agree, Unix is more prone to being hacked. Virus issues are almost nil though.
It's almost vice verca with Windows. Less likely to be hacked unless you fell into a trap, and vulnerable to more viruses simple because it's the most abundant OS.
I agree that the windows registry is more organized, but I would argue that it has more security issues. This is probably due to ppl simply designing more viruses targeting windows registry in the first place though. And once the registry is screwed up it become much hard to fix.
LOL. You didnt think it would be a better idea to clean this machine outside? instead just spray the dust everywhere where it can get into the new machine?
Also, just to give you a bit of a tip, instead of removing everything and using canned air, take it outside and use a leaf blower. Works tons better.
Don't let the hilarious home-made bomb builders tell you otherwise emeek. They're like diy garage rats who think they build better cars than BMW or Mercedes. Delusional.
You spend more time commenting on his videos than he does making them. If this is a part time job for him, it's a full time job for you, wintard. Talk about obsessed. Ahahaha.
Everytime I view an emeek video, you're there in the comment thread, posting away. I can only conclude, without counting, that you're manic obsessive.
You are right. The software has to have rendering nodes. Compressor may or may not be able to do it. I use Carrara. You folks can goggle it. It comes stand with five render nodes. For $150.00 dollars you can up that to 25 nodes. 3-D animation software needs render nodes. AE and FCP not so much. It can take 40 minutes to render one frame (cinema resolution) using 3D animation software (on a Quad Core). 25 systems will cut that time down to less than a minute.
ATi Radeon 5970 has 3200 Unified Shaders per Processor clocked at 725MHz
With a Crossfired 5970 it would have 6400 Unified shaders (Cores)
Nvidia Powered Supercomputer Tsubame was rated 2 fastest Supercomputer in Janpan.
Each blade has 4 processors in them, with 240 Cuda Cores (unified shaders). tests done on GPUs could be complete within 10 hours were as the same test on CPUs with 7 to 8 times the processors would of taken 3 months
It would depend on your software mostly. FCP has some built in stuff for it. I think you could probably use Grand Central Dispatch for it from what i have been reading. Premier can do it. But for actual instructions i couldn't tell you i only have experience with blender and Distributed GCC. but im sure if you google about it its in the top options.
its a machine that he can push his video or 3d render jobs off to. If it is setup right 2 computers rendering different parts in tandem is much faster than 1,
by the year 2015 that thing will be the standard, so in the time I'm saying hardware will have been matured to the point of that thing in the mini:by the way The pkerry12, a server and pro are just about the same thing except for the fact that the server is designed to handle a vary have payload of data(much more than the mac pro can handle with ease). And if you want internal raid... get external raid its much easier and cheaper.
I my opinion a lock is a bit pointless. I mean yeah if you use it to secure it to the desk but seriously . The mac pro has handles. Just unhook the wires and your are good to go.
I need to clean out my Mac Pro It's probably dusty as hell, I still have two 500GB of HD space and it's not even full yet and 4GB of ram but don't know if I want to upgrade it, Hey emeek what do you think about Intel 80GB SSD for the Mac Pro their going for $1,000 but it's really fast but i'm probably won't upgrade the 3.2GHz 8-core Mac Pro because i'm getting a new Mac Pro in 2010 maybe if it's worth it, but most item I want is the 30 inch LED been saving up sense Feb 08.
did you not read my comment? I said if you are not a home user you can clean up the registry with out reinstalling.
but the typical home user doesn't know how to do that.
the point is the Registry does fuck up more than the stability of Unix. and 50% of registry fuck ups are a result of viruses which there are plenty of on windows, Unix based viruses are next to none. (but there are some)
This is for the home user which make up the 30% of users that use windows. and the other 70% is corporate,
well your like the many home users out there that have never had a windows registry issue. lol meaning you must reinstall windows at some point. I really doubt you are running off the same stock install of windows for several years with out issues.
if you are not a a home user and you are running off the same install for years then you must use registry clean up programs. simply put no home user would do any of this the registry is not a standard of development, coding has its own infrastructure
lol, a costium build pc whit an i7 is betther than that! ..

@unclespinnydervish no what im saying is u can dual boot on a mac with windows and game on mac too. so having a pc for gaming is pointless if i can game on my mac
p4intb4llfr3akm4n 2 years ago
@p4intb4llfr3akm4n Okay, I misunderstood what you were saying.
Now for my rebutle to what you actually meant:
A gaming PC with equal real world performance to that of a Mac would cost considerably less. Considerably less!
Or vice versa, you spend $2000 (only because you cant really buy a Mac for any less), the PC would kill it off.
But you can easily build a very competent Gaming PC for £400 (not cheap ass parts, good parts) which would outperform all but the top end Macs.

AppleSoldier I have got to ask. You obviously love MACS. And I will be honest I don't. They have never looked quite right to me. And Apple has never made a mouse, not one, that feels right in my hand. Nor am I a fan of the look and feel of the OS, which is why I use KDE Linux.
But all this draconian you most love the Apple POV on what is best aside: what is it about a MAC that makes it and OS X so superior to Linux to justify the 70%-150% extra cost of a MAC to that of a comparable PC?

why need a lock? cause mac pros are in college computer labs and public work places. People will still RAM and hard drives dude. Dont think they wont if they can open it up and pull it out in less than 30 seconds.
AppleSoldier 2 years ago
the mac pro was so dirty because i hadnt cleaned it in a year, lol
AppleSoldier 2 years ago
All in all I think the 3870 is a BAD ASS card for its time. ATI kills nvidia, i have always said that from the beginning. Now the 5870 is the top dog and all these pc fanboys who was PRAISING nvidia last year and the year before that for the 8800 is now praising ATI. They just like whoever is the fastest. I have always loved ATI, never like nvidia. ATI drivers are SO MUCH more mature for mac.
AppleSoldier 2 years ago

DCuerpoJr 2 years ago
a 40k printer hooked to a 1500 dollar machine? what is wrong with this picture?
AppleSoldier 2 years ago
@AppleSoldier

DCuerpoJr 2 years ago
I agree that the windows registry is more organized, but I would argue that it has more security issues. This is probably due to ppl simply designing more viruses targeting windows registry in the first place though. And once the registry is screwed up it become much hard to fix.
Unix has it's own security issues as well though.

LOL. You didnt think it would be a better idea to clean this machine outside? instead just spray the dust everywhere where it can get into the new machine?
Also, just to give you a bit of a tip, instead of removing everything and using canned air, take it outside and use a leaf blower. Works tons better.

Most likely rendering high-quality video or 3d Animation.
DCuerpoJr 2 years ago
DCuerpoJr
You are right. The software has to have rendering nodes. Compressor may or may not be able to do it. I use Carrara. You folks can goggle it. It comes stand with five render nodes. For $150.00 dollars you can up that to 25 nodes. 3-D animation software needs render nodes. AE and FCP not so much. It can take 40 minutes to render one frame (cinema resolution) using 3D animation software (on a Quad Core). 25 systems will cut that time down to less than a minute.

Intel Core i7 975 OC @ 4.8GHz
ATi Radeon HD 5970 Crossfire
24 GB PC3-16000 (2000MHz)
This would cost half the Price of one of these tin boxes but who gives a damn
TABSF1944 2 years ago
The 24GB of PC3-16000 RAM alone would cost over $1,200.
Not to mention the i7 975 processor at $1,000 and the HD5970 at $600 a piece.
And we're not even getting into the additional components.
Sure, it'll be a screaming fast gaming machine but I doubt it'll be 1/2 price of the Mac Pro.
Plus the MacPro isn't a gaming machine. It was designed to be a work horse for graphic design, 3D animation, CAD, HD Video Rendering etc.
DCuerpoJr 2 years ago
ATi Radeon 5970 has 3200 Unified Shaders per Processor clocked at 725MHz
With a Crossfired 5970 it would have 6400 Unified shaders (Cores)
Nvidia Powered Supercomputer Tsubame was rated 2 fastest Supercomputer in Janpan.
Each blade has 4 processors in them, with 240 Cuda Cores (unified shaders). tests done on GPUs could be complete within 10 hours were as the same test on CPUs with 7 to 8 times the processors would of taken 3 months
TABSF1944 2 years ago
Lol dude you looked buzzed at the end of the video
Zombiebrainstew 2 years ago
It would depend on your software mostly. FCP has some built in stuff for it. I think you could probably use Grand Central Dispatch for it from what i have been reading. Premier can do it. But for actual instructions i couldn't tell you i only have experience with blender and Distributed GCC. but im sure if you google about it its in the top options.

its a machine that he can push his video or 3d render jobs off to. If it is setup right 2 computers rendering different parts in tandem is much faster than 1,
KusuriRX 2 years ago
by the year 2015 that thing will be the standard, so in the time I'm saying hardware will have been matured to the point of that thing in the mini:by the way The pkerry12, a server and pro are just about the same thing except for the fact that the server is designed to handle a vary have payload of data(much more than the mac pro can handle with ease). did you not read my comment? I said if you are not a home user you can clean up the registry with out reinstalling.
but the typical home user doesn't know how to do that.
the point is the Registry does fuck up more than the stability of Unix. and 50% of registry fuck ups are a result of viruses which there are plenty of on windows, Unix based viruses are next to none. (but there are some)
This is for the home user which make up the 30% of users that use windows. and the other 70% is corporate,

if you are not a a home user and you are running off the same install for years then you must use registry clean up programs. simply put no home user would do any of this the registry is not a standard of development, coding has its own infrastructure
