Something to remember is you can assign healing (and other) items to the d-pad, preventing the need to pause to heal up.

Theres an easy way to beating this boss, if you run over to the right side and go into the corner and attack from the side near there, he can't really spit fireballs or lounge at you. Even when the second appears that can't hit you either, I beat him in 46 or 47 seconds, kinda accidentally found it after dying twice trying to attack him head on.
