It is baffling to me why Creedence Clearwater Revival and The Band never had a song that went #1 on the U.S. Billboard. The highest CCR's songs ever went was #2. It is a big crime and waste because both CCR and The Band had better Songs in 1969 and 1970 a lot better than Other Singers/Groups overrated Songs that went #1 on the U.S. Billboard in 1969 and 1970.
i have to say I am quite annoyed with all of these people implying that The Band were American. In particular that one critic talking about the album being made by people who "felt like foreigners in their own country". We have so few good bands, we just HAVE to stop the ones we do have from being known as American.
It's painful to listen to Robbie in this documentary prattling about making music for the sake of music as his sole inspiration. As we've seen, nothing could be further from the truth...at least later on.
@mexicansmell It's hard to believe Robbie and Levon were in the same band together. But it's not hard to believe that Levon can't stand Robbie. Robbie talks like the biggest self absorbed prick I've ever heard.
I love that Rick played the fiddle down at his chest in that old-timey style. It just adds to the illusion that these guys were deposited here from another time and place.
@gfh110 never thought of that but guess you're right. Me thinks that is one their trademark features, this odd habit of once in a while throwing in something unexpected in the given context (or at least using it in an unusual way). the fiddle and jews harp in rag mama, the mandolin in rockin chair, the clarinette in unfaithful, etc etc
The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down is one of those songs that is embedded in American history forever I believe. Last week on a night out with a bunch of my friends (18 to 19 years old) I had this album on and that song came on everybody stopped and listened for 3 and a half minutes and when it was done. This girl turned to me and said "Wow, who was that?" and of course I replied the The Band.
@burtonsnwbrder07: It's about General Sherman's march into Georgia when he crushed the South once and for all. It must have been awful for the civilians.
@cabraharp01 -- Yup! Also, just a bit of random trivia - Peter Svensson (the guitarist, composer from The Cardigans) named his son after Levon. That's respect!
"The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down" is one of the truly amazing songs and it does sound a bit odd with anyone but Levon singing it, but someone had to write it.
yea Levon was born to sing it and its basically his material although he coudnt articulate it, but I dont think it sounds bad at all, just different. Have a look at the weight here on UT where they are included in canadian hall of fame where Rob sings, thought it would be a disaster but it was none of the sort.
yeah Robbie is really not as bad a singer as a lot of people seem to think, I actually though it was okay in this and I agree he was pretty good in the hall of fame video.
@billionhalloween the strange thing with that song is that I end up crying about what happened to The South as well - and I'm British! Where's that Confederate Falg, the south's gonna rise again, boy....

I think they all sang great, the harmonies are just out of this world, but perhaps Levon is the most powerful /physical singer and the one that is nicest to watch as he sings.

@gilmour73 Marcus is referring to listeners of the album feeling like "foreigners in their own country." He's not referring to The Band themselves.

Do you think Little Feat listened to this a lot. Lowell George and Bill Payne had to have been influenced by this tune.

it's funny cause levon's the only american in the band.

I don't know what it is, but Rick looks totally..broken in that shot of him playing the violin. It's almost like all life has gone out of him.
He was such a great musician.

I don't know, personally I love hearing and seeing Richard sing the most. He's just got such a unique but easy on the ears voice.
I can see where you're coming from though.
