Believe me when I say that we're very far from "rich", my wife and I just live well within our means and spend our money on the things we like and care for. Thank you.
Good job, you think the best bass player I've ever seen, I would like to see you playing Genesis - No Reply At All, as we consider one of the greatest bass lines.
Thanks. I started playing around with "No Reply" last night after reading your comment. I believe that song tend to get blocked vigorously by YouTube but I'll give it a shot.
Hi Troy. You're playing is fantastic. After years of playing guitar I recently satisfied my long interest in bass and picked up a Squier VM Jazz bass. Great bass for $300. As I started to learn this song, I used my ring finger to fret the 4th fret in the beginning run, whereas I see you're use your pinky. I can actually play it with either finger, but do you think it makes a difference which one to use? Obviously using the pinky helps strengthen it as it is the weaker finger. Thoughts?
Thank you very much. And I hope you enjoy your time with the bass.
I would advise using your pinky as often as possible in order to strengthen it. When I was learning to play I never used it and that made for some very awkward and uncomfortable stretches. I only recently started using it and can only use it sparingly as it will not cooperate with my ring finger.
Rickenbacker's are nice instruments, but I personally far prefer the tone you extract from your Jazz. For lack of a better term, it sounds more 'organic'. I have a 2010 Deluxe Jazz on order, sunburst, black pickguard, rosewood neck with pearl binding and block inlays, quite similar to your Geddy Lee! Can't wait to get my hands on it.
I agree with you. The Ric sounds great for certain things but horrid for others. The Jazz bass is a much more versatile instrument. Congratulations on your Jazz I hope you love it.
Glad you got to see them. And thanks. I have a playlist on my channel titled "Bass Tutorials" (which are really just slowed down demonstrations). You might find something there of interest. I did the bass under the solo section of this song on one of them.
Is this bass worth it, i was thinking about getting the black model, i tried it out two or three times and i like the neck and sound quality. Thanks for the reply!
I think so. I'm very happy with it and probably play it more than my Rickenbacker at this point. If you're really on a budget I've heard nothing but good things about the "70's Modified Jazz Basses". They come in black and natural.
@TJH3113 Just a small idea, have you ever tried muse? Because i have been a bass player since a while now and i've always found there bass tracks....Intresting... Although they are really fun to play!
No, I've never played anything by Muse. I think I might have heard only one song - the one with the distorted bass in the beginning. I'll give them a listen if I get the chance.
@TJH3113 What kind of jazz is that? The only experience i've had on jazzes was my first which was a mexican one, but never really played an american jazz. How do they go tone wise?
It's a Geddy Lee model and they're made in Japan. I've heard some people, more knowledgeable than me, say they think the Japanese stuff is superior in quality to the American made instruments.
@TJH3113 I play american basses, and i've never played a japanese before. I've got a couple of great musicman basses, but i'm not sure if there are any japanese makes of them. If i was to buy another jazz, would you suggest an american or a japanese if i'm going to be playing it for progressive music?
I was talking about the Japanese-made Fender stuff. I like Musicman as well. I don't think it matters what kind of bass you play as long as you like it and are comfortable with it.
I just came across this comment while answering another. I didn't get notification of it. The link is not working for me and I didn't see it on your channel.
Interested? You betcha! I have so much difficulty placing the notes exactly where they need to be...thanks to you, I'm improving on this & quite a few others. You have some ear for subtle nuances!
i listened to the isolated bass for this and i noticed in the verses when Geddy plays the A flat note he plays the octave of it apart from the first verse. Then in the final verse he plays the octave of the B note.
Yes. When I was looking for a used one there were none around so I went to a local music store they had just gotten this one in and had a couple in black as well. I chose this because there are a million black ones out there.
I don't know how much you're into bass stuff but did you notice that Geddy's changed his bass neck on this tour. It has white pearl blocks instead of the black.
Brilliant! Absolutely brilliant! The only version I have heard on here who absolutely h as the guitar solo bass part absolutely right - You have an awesome ear mate! As do I (hee hee)
Geds basslines stand o their own imo. same with Neil's parts. You can play their parts isolated and most people recognize the song instantly. Not really the same with other bands. Thats Rush rule imo.
@soopahsoopah I only began using my pinky a short while ago after a long break from playing. For a lot of years I fretted with only three fingers, it was a bad habit and hard to break. One odd thing, my pinky will not work with my ring finger right next to it. By the way, I liked the videos of the RUSH cover band you've uploaded on your channel.
@keytarpimp Thanks. Are those extension cords set as wallpaper on your channel? I do a big Halloween thing each year, have miles of extension cord and had a flashback when I saw it.
