This the Scots are haunted by the curse of Presbyterianism: Robert the Bruce did drive the English before him out of Scotland like sheep, but now the Scots cannot even drive out the English sheep; no Scottish government would have allowed the destruction of its political and military backbone like the Clan system to satisfy base economic greed.
@aolser10 You can just get it on Amazon. Both on DVD and on Bluray. Search for "A history of Scotland". It's definitely worth the buy. Just finished the watching it.
The same conditions of capital industrialization that racked Scotland also created great social stresses in the US as well - especially those from folk or traditional backgrounds. The U.S. created public memories (heritage) too after the American Civil War. Some based on history some not. The "holy relics" of Scottish heritage have a similar emotional strength to relics of various periods of American heritage.
@scotsexile1 I wanted to see if Alan Watt was accurate when saying that the Scottish Highlanders were driving out not by the excepted reason, but because the Highlanders were a thorn in the Crown's side. They were fiercely independent and had to go so they shipped them off in old rickety boats where many drowned. I'm giving up at the :33 mark. I figured their would be a better reason than sheep, but its like the Potato famine in Ireland. The poor people were starving due to Crown policies!!!
2- the Lairds used the Tacksmen to muscle out the crofters. but, justice being poetic, the Tacksmen themselves were booted out! imagine the reception a Tacksman got when he arrived at Selkirks Red River settlement in Manitoba!! i bet they beat the crap out of him!
why didnt the Lairds see that the Humblees=crofters, could have raised these sheep themselves and stayed on the land! there was lots of grazing land, no one had to be cleared out.
@acerb45666555 Highland crofting was labour intensive and all available arable land was exploited for sufficiency crops of oats and root vegetables. Cattle provided meat and dairy. Labour intensive but not well-endowed with profits. Sheep by comparison required a small permanent labour force but vast areas for pasture. The wee Jimmies and Morags were an obstacle in the eyes of the precursor to industrial-agriculture.
I belong to a scottish clan so SCOTLAND ALL THE WAY!!!

This is pretty awful stuff, typical dumbed down history presented by a BBC drone. I gave up after 3 minutes of cliche-ridden tedium.
