nice this video that shows the differences of the same game on zelda 3 snes (super nintendo) and GBA (Game Boy Advance), I personally finished the game with both versions, the game on the SNES and much more difficult and less censorship, and censorship on the GBA and e + are greatly simplified as a game, not to mention that there were many bugs on the snes gba previously removed on that ^ ^!.
Censorship? There wasn't anything controversial other than the fact that the 'flashing rainbow' effect when you damage enemies no longer exists on the GBA.

East Palace to Thieves' Town glitch: perform the glitch in reverse (that is, enter the real Thieves' Town from the Dark World), and you'll come out of the Eastern Palace with the Dark World music in the Light World.
No, that clip was to demostrate a sequence break in the dungeon if you did dungeon 6 before dungeon 5. You can't do it on the GBA version because of the level design change in dungeon 5
The GBA version of the game has more of a Master Quest-like feel to it, but only in some areas unlike Ocarina of Time's Master Quest edition.
I hope the Nintendo eShop will have the GBA version of A Link to the Past soon, because I actually like the GBA version of the game more than the SNES version.
If the GBA version hits eShop there are going to be a few problems::
* All GBA games on the 3DS will not have Link Cable Support so it means
* No Four Swords extra, the DSiWare copy is coming out this month, based on the GBA version.
* No Palace of Four Sword without glitching
* No Hurricane Spin Attack
* (unconfirmed) The DSiWare copy is unable to unlock new attacks such as Sword Beam and Hurricane spin which is normally unlocked by playing through ALTTP.
Near the end of the game, in the Dark World where Link's house would be is a bomb shop. You can buy a Super Bomb to blast the cracks in the pyramid on Dark World.
I'm playing through the GBA version right now. Personally, I found the SNES control scheme far too bothersome (I like using my R trigger rather than forget that I have to use a neglected Y button to use special items)- something that should have been optional in '91. The Ice Palace trick, though handy, should have stayed put. It's not even that frustrating to figure out in the SNES version.
I digress. A great game no matter what version you're playing.
@batursi Actually, what they did to Ice Palace was that in the SNES version you needed to backtrack through the dungeon the same way so you could push one of the blocks at the left down the hole to activate the pressure tile, but most people instead just went for the Cane of Somaria and skipped that part of the dungeon.
In the GBA version it forces the backtracking, but kind of gets rid of the puzzle of getting the door to stay open.

sure, the GBA version is an upgrade from the snes version.... BUT I still prefer the SNES version. Much more epic without the recycled oot sounds... (although oot is still my favorite zelda game >.<)
@parsonbeast I skimmed the video... :| Why is it better? GBA is better for me just overall because of what systems I own, I just wondered if it made a big difference.
This GBA port has something no other SNES game on the GBA had, to my knowledge... a Brightness option that restores the original SNES colors in the menu. I can't believe so few people know about it!
I bet on the 3DS Virtual Console, they will add GBA a year lator and shove the 8 BIt like Inferior GBA versions of SNES game down handheld gamers throats while home consoles get all the good stuff with 24 bit 7 channel surround sound like the SNES . Nintendo's old handhelds sound wirse than than an Atari.
But when these all games show up on 3DS eventually , Handheld gamers will still have to put up with bad color and bad sound just like PAL home console gamer got to deal with the framerate on PAL Version release's. Nintendo is so friggen cheap that only the U.S Home Console get the best versions while Handheld and PAL home gamers get downgraded versions.
Your opinion is true but I think the handhelds are not 100% downgraded, ok both sound and colour is roughly 5-10% worse than the SNES they make up for the extra content = more fun and replayablity. Not to forget you can play it anywhere.
The main aim for playing games is for fun.
"Nintendo is so friggen cheap"
I'll say yes when it comes to Mario's 25 Anniversary edition on PAL Wii systems.
I haven't played all of the GBA games that originated from the SNES like FF IV & VI.
@SPS148669 you clearly havent played GOLDEN SUN series on gba. best sound you can get on gba and surpass anything you could find on snes. the difference is that snes has a integrated sound chip that does the work while gba have theirs inside the game cartridge, in other word developpers can make their games sound even better than what's on snes. also you've got it wrong, snes is16 bit while gba is 32 bit. the only reason some games sounds bad is because of bad programming.
The SNES version have a batteri there can save your data, and someday your batteri will die :(....the GBA version have no batteri and can still save data,....If you have a Gameboy player on your Gamecube, you are a lucky bastard as I am :)
@Greenalink Ahh,in the SNES version,I used the walk-through-walls glitch to get to the room in the Ice Temple with the dark spirits popping out of the walls and the floor moves. Here's the thing though, the textures were glitchy,so there were no electro enemies(which means no way out since one dropped the key) and the hole where the dark spirits shoot out of had a glitchy ice temple texture over them.
the first time playing, it took a long time for me to reach the other side, in fact, you're not be able to use the cane of somaria in that dungeon, at first
because the normal way you get it is in the 9th dungeon (6th dungeon in the shadow world)
But it's actually possible to do Misery Mire first then Ice Palace later which is why it is included. The whole point was for a speed runner's point of view is that GBA players can't use the Cane of Somaria to clear past the last section of the dungeon.
Until Tompa found a damage boosting shortcut that not only obsoletes the previous shortcut but is doable on both versions.
The best part of my childhood was going into the cave around the 7th Darkworld dungeon and there would be monsters that move with you. So I can make them dance to the Cave Music!
I personally like the snes version better altho some of the controll additions from the GBA are very nice. I hate the constant shouting at every swordslash and I think it is cheap how they switched the original assistant out for maple. The original had more character and fit better into the world.
As to why it is brighter for the GBA version: Cause it is made to be seen on a GBA screen, it has to be brighter pretty much.
I really thought the GBA version was a pretty good port of the original overall. Didn't even notice the change to the Ice Palace in the GBA one @-@ I always just took the long way. I never thought of going through Misery Mire first.
I'll make a note of that when I get to that point in my narrated walkthrough I'm doing right now of the SNES version of the game on my channel
Wow great video must have taken you a long time to figure all that out, I was wondering Ive played the GBA version and was going to get the SNES version for my wii on the channel but after seeing this video im not sure which one I prefer now, I was thinking that if I play LTTP on my tv as the SNES version the graphics would be better, but from this video it looks like the gba version is better, So I would get the GBA version on my wii with the Visual boy but I was thinking, would the graphics
While the GBA version changed a few things it's also an improved version of ALttP. I love both versions but if I had a choice between the SNES version and the GBA version I'd go with the GBA version.
people railing on the GBA version are trying to be cool. I honestly bet half of you weren't even alive back when it came out. The GBA version is a pretty good port, mkay?
@Rand200 I think I'll get both the SNES original and the GBA port, so I have a version for home and a version for on the go. I do that with lots of games. For example; although Streets of Rage on Game Gear is inferior to it's Mega Drive counterpart, it is still a good travel version. I own both the Mega Drive and Game Gear versions of Streets of Rage, so I have a version for home and a version for on the go.
I've never cared too much for the Zelda games before, but for some reason I am getting rather eager to try A Link To The Past. I have before played original NES Zelda, Gamecube's 4 Swords and Wii's Twilight Princess. I didn't enjoy Twilight Princess much, but I did quite enjoy the first Zelda game and 4 Swords.
How can you not? A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Super Mario World made up most of my childhood. And they're still some of the best games out there.
I love videos like this, where they show what's changed, but what surprised me the most was the part about getting around the wall, that was probably the biggest change!
i'll take the original for my taste the extras in the GBA didnt care for even though i own it too and since you needed people to play with you on four swords and i can play the snes version on my tv.
i just play they game for the game not the extra things.
it's obvious the gba version is superior, so many useful changes to make the game more enjoyable. i hope they remake the original first zelda game and the second.
This GBA port is awesome i love it, i also love the Final Fantasy 4 one. Even though i am not the kinda "graphic" guy i am more about gameplay. But i like having those games on the go it´s just awesome
There's no reason to hate on one version or the other. When I'm at my computer, I like to play the snes version, but I can practice/enjoy the game on the go or in bed with the gba version, so why complain? It's still an amazing game either way.
Some of the extras like Hurricane spin or new levels outweighs the cons (inferior graphics and sound). Remember Gameplay is more important than both Graphics and Sound ;).
Sonic Genesis port on the GBA has so many glitches it makes the game unplayable. ALTTP and Mario World don't, infact Mario World has 1 less bug which they fixed the Smashola exploit. Again the extra gameplay content makes it a better port over graphics and sound.
@Greenalink I'm slowly learning this. I'm easily able to pick up the GBA versions of the Final Fantasy games over the SNES ones, largely due to the refined content added to it.
Sure, all of these SNES-to-GBA ports look and sound worse than their original versions, but they do offer more content. Donkey Kong Country 3 has a new soundtrack AND a new world, for example.
@Greenalink As much as I like the extras in the GBA ports in terms of there just being more content, it bothers me that the quality of the ports is lower than the SNES versions. I'm more of a quality>quantity kinda guy, so I guess I really prefer the SNES versions over their GBA ports. Even reviews between the SNES and GBA versions have the SNES on top.
One day, I hope we see a version that has the quality of the SNES version with the extras of the GBA, but I doubt we'll ever see that.
@Greenalink I think the graphics and sound quality are better too. If you are using an emulator go to the options for your file and turn it to the lowest brightness setting. andther sound is bad because the default setting for vba is 22 khz instead of 44 khz. go to options sound and click 44 khz.
I can't seem to find an answer to this. How come the Magic Powder icon is gold in some videos? I can find no mention of there being an upgraded version of the Magic Powder, nor does it seem to be gold by default in the GBA version. I've really tried to find an answer. Can you help me out?
tengo una consola xbx y trae juegos de super nintendo imcorporado, y me gusta harto este juego pero, hasta ahora voy rescatando a las princesas y voy buscando la 3 pero no hay acceso, que hago?????
I remember trying the walk through walls glitch on the SNES version one day because I was bored and how the game glitched like hell then crashed. Good times.
The SNES version is the only version I could live with.
I find the sound on the GBA to be unbearably awful. Even the original Game Boy sounded better than the GBA.
That PCM crap they tried to pull on the GBA just ends up sounding terrible in every game I've heard. It's like listening to a badly tuned radio station.
well for me the SNES version is better in GBA the music in SNES sounds better than the GBA version one the graphics are less pixelated than the GBA version and the SNES version has an easter egg the chris houlighan room
i remember i had this one and i thought it was pretty gay so sold it. now i wish i had it =[. i have links awakening since i was like 7. best one ever. and oracle of seasons n ages n minish cap. those were the good ones for GB.
gba better and i played snes first but everything is better on gba like the music is more pronounced and the graphics look a little more polished; also its portable
despite the gameplay alterations, i'd say the SNES version is far superior based on the sound and image quality.

PAL gamers only have 50 fps on the console but 60 fps on the portables.
The SNES version on A Link to the Past lacks the Palace of Four Sword and Yoshi's Island on the GBA has 6 more levels than SNES
The only major flaw theory NIntendo would do to the 3DS is to not emulate the link cable (multiplayer)

I don't remember very well, but it seems I had issues with the SNES version because of that.
And do you respawn outside of dungeons when you die?
Thanks.
15V31F 1 year ago
@15V31F the answers are...no... for both n.nU, you can't attack diagonaly and you don't respawn on dungeons...

While I like the sounds and graphics better on SNES (no annoying scream every time I use the sword), the GBA gameplay changes were for the better.
BrimstoneLandscapes 1 year ago
@BrimstoneLandscapes Same, in the GBA version the colors are super bright but the gameplay is for the better and is awesome.

people railing on the GBA version are trying to be cool. I honestly bet half of you weren't even alive back when it came out. The GBA version is a pretty good port, mkay?

Where are you/ what room are you in at 7:49? I don't recognize it at all.

It's funny how I knew most of those changes instinctually. Felt something was different but never could get what. Thanks.

How can you play games like that :S
MrKubulo 1 year ago
@MrKubulo
How can you not? A Link to the Past, Super Metroid, and Super Mario World made up most of my childhood. And they're still some of the best games out there.
FlagPoleJumper 1 year ago
you know what would be cool, if they remade this 1 but make it like ocarina of time but with real good graphics!
speednecromancer666 1 year ago
I think 'Zelda A Link to the Past' changes from SNES to GBA. There are many glitches you can do, but, I can too!

i'll take the original for my taste the extras in the GBA didnt care for even though i own it too and since you needed people to play with you on four swords and i can play the snes version on my tv.
i just play they game for the game not the extra things.
deluxedookie 1 year ago
it's obvious the gba version is superior, so many useful changes to make the game more enjoyable. i hope they remake the original first zelda game and the second.

This GBA port is awesome i love it, i also love the Final Fantasy 4 one. Even though i am not the kinda "graphic" guy i am more about gameplay. But i like having those games on the go it´s just awesome

@darkman699 That's my only complaint about the GBA version.
aquadragon89 1 year ago
@darkman699 Its the same sound they just lowered the quality of it so it would fit the gba memory without taking up too much space.
Doomsfall 1 year ago
@darkman699 You are totally right... this new concepts really messes the old experience :/ ...
Angemell 1 year ago
There's no reason to hate on one version or the other. When I'm at my computer, I like to play the snes version, but I can practice/enjoy the game on the go or in bed with the gba version, so why complain? It's still an amazing game either way.

GBA ports of all games suck.
KevKo95 2 years ago
No they don't
Some of the extras like Hurricane spin or new levels outweighs the cons (inferior graphics and sound). Remember Gameplay is more important than both Graphics and Sound ;).
Greenalink 2 years ago 6
Yeah, they do. Have you seen the Sonic ports? They completely screwed everything up. Ditto with LTTP and Super Mario World.
KevKo95 2 years ago
Sonic Genesis port on the GBA has so many glitches it makes the game unplayable. ALTTP and Mario World don't, infact Mario World has 1 less bug which they fixed the Smashola exploit. Again the extra gameplay content makes it a better port over graphics and sound.
Greenalink 2 years ago 6
@Greenalink the sonic genesis port works fine. just a bit of lag.
corphish129 1 year ago
@Greenalink I'm slowly learning this. I'm easily able to pick up the GBA versions of the Final Fantasy games over the SNES ones, largely due to the refined content added to it.
Sure, all of these SNES-to-GBA ports look and sound worse than their original versions, but they do offer more content. Donkey Kong Country 3 has a new soundtrack AND a new world, for example.
ShakinJamacian 1 year ago
@Greenalink As much as I like the extras in the GBA ports in terms of there just being more content, it bothers me that the quality of the ports is lower than the SNES versions. I'm more of a quality>quantity kinda guy, so I guess I really prefer the SNES versions over their GBA ports. Even reviews between the SNES and GBA versions have the SNES on top.
One day, I hope we see a version that has the quality of the SNES version with the extras of the GBA, but I doubt we'll ever see that.
ShakinJamacian 1 year ago
What Sonic portS?
jacksprat1990 1 year ago
@Greenalink I think the graphics and sound quality are better too. If you are using an emulator go to the options for your file and turn it to the lowest brightness setting. andther sound is bad because the default setting for vba is 22 khz instead of 44 khz. go to options sound and click 44 khz.

snes cuz its darker. to bright in gba version, although theres more stuff i that game

I can't seem to find an answer to this. How come the Magic Powder icon is gold in some videos? I can find no mention of there being an upgraded version of the Magic Powder, nor does it seem to be gold by default in the GBA version. I've really tried to find an answer. Can you help me out?

I remember trying the walk through walls glitch on the SNES version one day because I was bored and how the game glitched like hell then crashed. Good times.

The GBA portal sound sounds like an introduction to a song while the SNES one sounds a bit more like teleporting to me.
I dunno why.
Zootsuitshittles 2 years ago
The Portal did sound horrible on the GBA version lmao
OldSchoolGamer1975 2 years ago 2
I can't believe that they were so unoriginal to recycle the screams of Young Link from Ocarina of Time to the GBA version.
Also those screams don't have to much sense because when Link gets hit in the SNES version it sounds much more different.
yupi240 2 years ago
more different than what?

the snes one beats the shit outa gba.
graphichs r better nd smoother.
game play is better
nd the music in the gba is awful
hot4some1 2 years ago 3
The SNES version is the only version I could live with.
I find the sound on the GBA to be unbearably awful. Even the original Game Boy sounded better than the GBA.
That PCM crap they tried to pull on the GBA just ends up sounding terrible in every game I've heard. It's like listening to a badly tuned radio station.
The SNES is a nice machine though.
