love how they're taking the band. i bought mellon collie and i only listened to the slow ballady songs like this one (take me down, porcelina, eyes of ruby) i love his song writing for these ones. love it!
Billy is basically a one man composer. He's a lot like the old time composers who wrote orchestras and classical music where they wrote each part and then handed them to the various musicians. It bugs me when people freak out about how "Smashing Pumpkins isn't even a band anymore." Smashing Pumpkins has basically been Billy Corgan since Siemese Dream. Although I liked James Iha and D'arcy, they were really just an image that we associated with the music Billy wrote. NIN is no different.
Jay- I have to disagree, Smashing Pumpkins songs are played very often on the radio. I think why they arent credited as much as they should is there new music doesnt appeal to people like there old does. If i could give you a comparison its like when Mettalica came out with load adn reload it just didnt get the attention the others did
I know this is going to sound stupid, but even with millions of albums sold and the fact they have headlined everywhere. I still think Billy and his bands are underrated. Why aren't the billed as biggest band in the world. I have seen REM, U2 and Radiohead. They blow them all away. Why aren't they on mainstream radio or always in the news? Despite what everyone says, I think Billy has grown as a guitarist, songwriter and poet.
@jayellucaz I totally agree with you! He has definitely grown in those areas! He expresses the emotions so deeply and strongly in a unique way.... I think they too are underrated for what they have become even though Billy has been the only one to lead this band into the late 2000s.
Because U2, Radiohead, and REM have one thing in common that Smashing Pumpkins dont. They stayed together, and didnt break up. Smashing Pumpkins broke up, and then when reformed, only included two original members, and didnt write songs nearly anywhere as good as they did in the 90s. However . . . this song is REALLY fuckin good, and he needs to make more like this. PS. I love the pumpkins. My fave band of all time for the most part.
Yeah. Absolutely. Even Zwan I thought was hugely underrated; It seems llike he got disheartened and gave up due to the poor reception but there were so many great songs.
This version of sunkissed is beautiful. So beautiful.
@jayellucaz - Agreed. The guy just oozes talent, STILL, "bursting with unknown". I haven't heard REM or Radiohead's new albums, but REM went quiet, and Radiohead went weird, while U2 hung out with Brian Eno too much, and hasn't produced much good stuff since the '90s (though I bought their last album).
This song sounds great, it is not really worse than the old songs but the new stuff doesn't touch me as deep as "Starla" or "Snail" did.
I don't know why but now the Smashing Pumpkins sound more "arranged" to me. It's actually good music but today they are an orchestra with a conductor in the past they were a band.
Well I just gotta say I like it but from listening too much to their old stuff. None of it is as "haunting" as that was. I mean 1979 is probably the most sentimentally sounding song EVER made, and this is kinda mellow indeed but doesn't really capture me. The horns really makes it a weird combination in my opinion, it sounds more "fake". Otherwise it's astounding.
the new acoustic SP material is great, everything on the American Gothic EP and played live.
I agree with everyone about the production... the live-off-the-floor raw feel (like Machina II) brings life to the tracks. the super clean studio versions just pale in comparison
I remember when I was looking for this lp in the stores and couldn't find it anywhere. Had to order it online. I'm glad I went through all the trouble finding it because this song is awesome!
I think it's his voice which sounds much better here than on the studio version. For some reason their new music seems so badly produced compared to their past works. They need Butch Vig again.
I was a Pumpkins fan for a long time. But due to my friend's suicide and his using Mellon collie as one of his excuses. I just couldn't...but I see hope in these songs. They are truly some of his best. It's nice closure. Thanks.
Hey, I'm really sorry about your loss. And for me, theres nothing better than music to help over come it. After my grandfathers death I picked up playing guitar, and now I have a gig downtown, so good things can come out of this, just look in the right direction.
(i dont speak english sorry ) i think is something stupid to use an excuse like this to comite suicide. i dont understand why the people do stupid things?. i just can say that nobody blame Barry White , Backstreet boys or Frank sinatra just because people fall in love. all in this life is about choises, freedom and the love you feel for YOU and the others. if they coommite suicide was their choise bad for them, the life is for the living.
obviously you don't respect jimmy chamberlin as a musician. Otherwise you wouldn't say those things. Or you are too much of a billy fan.
Seriously man, watch some of Jimmy's Drum Clinics. He's a fine musician. And honestly, I think he grew OUT of Smashing Pumpkins...HE moved on, they didn't.
If u mean in the sense that there is a bit of a ceiling once u become ABSOLUTELY WORLD class, well than yeah, I guess...but if this is some sort of dis on Jimmy, yer frickin' NUTZ, & a VERY poor judge of drumming...
Everything he does makes me ache...so beautiful deep in my soul.

The most romantic lyric Billy Corgan has ever written for Veronica Grey is in this song,
"I'll never chase
a brighter sun
than you'll become."
Prophecy ?

Sunkissed is on the EP "American Gothic".
99 Floors has not been officially realeased, only played live.

thx for the speedy response :)

not entirely true about "99 Floors" It's on official DVD "If All Goes Wrong"
fantazjusz33 2 years ago 2
This song is from the "American Gothic EP," which only had a physical release in Europe, if I'm correct.
99 Floors is yet to have a studio version release, but maybe it will show up on the new album, "Teargarden by Kaleidyscope!"
easternmind 2 years ago
@jcyn21 You can get 99 Floors on the If All Goes Wrong DVD (I think theres a CD in there too with the audio files, but I'm not sure about that)
