I suppose the cellist knows the sheet music by heart and can read it from so far to see where in the piece he is éxactly.

@Trioptio Possible... very often, when the people in the first row of the viola section would forget their music, so I'd lend it to them and read over their shoulders from the second row (about 1.5 meters from the music). Guess it depends on the font of the music and how big it is...
