  • this guy has all the answers... seriously

  • "play that you meant it"

  • wow this is so good!!! i am a 15 year old pianist and i am desperate to get into jazz- i just dont know how to get onto improv. thanks so much JazzVideoGuy!!!

  • @electrokat1000 Get Aebersold vol 1. Before you play anything read it and then read it again. Play and read it again. Rinse repeat. Go see LIVE Jazz. Do it all again then do it some more.

  • i love his analogy of playing jazz as learning a new language

  • I love this cat. Makes it so simple. Dig deep into the tradition, then master one line/lick/piece at a time and 'make it your own'. Thanks Mr. Mulgrew (and jazzvideoguy too!)

  • Piano players... have you heard Mulgrew Miller...

  • I never approached improvisation the way he does. This gives me relief because my improvisation sucks now I know what to do with my guitar.

  • Thank God, for Mulgrew Miller. And thank you, Bret, for sharing this. True words.

  • This is a some heavy stuff. When you talk, you know what idea you want to share and how you are going to share it, from beginning to end. If I talked like I improvise, people would think I was an idiot. Youtubers, I just realized that all I'm communicating in my music is that i've learned my scales.... I'm going to take a nap now.

  • @gospelkeys07 wow you don't know wat ur missing. millers a great pianist. i was kinda fortunate cause my dad was heavy into jazz so i heard a lotta the lesser known cats as well as the popular ones.

  • amazing... I wish this clip was 5 hours. Knowledge is POWER! Mulgrew is KNOWLEDGE..... Good job JazzVideoGuy!!!

  • I met Mulgrew when I was in high school, about ten years ago at a similar workshop. Got to spend a week playing in a combo he led and I remember being really struck by his generosity and the deliberate, no-bullshit manner with which he carried himself. Honestly one of the most impressive musicians/human beings I've come across. It makes me smile to see he's still out there, passing it on. Good on you, Mulgrew.

  • There are plenty of great musicians alive where one can go and get the correct information. The music industry has been so corrupted with non-sense that the young generation is just out there.

  • @nealsrhythmandgroove When I say this; I speak for everyone. "Just shut the hell up. You do not know anything about jazz. and I bet if you sat down at a gig shit would flop out your instrument."

  • Thanks Grew... This is what is missing in the scene today. There is a lot of Bull-S?%t out here... I wish more young musicians would take it upon themselves to learn the language of this music. It should be one's first priority. There are too many people being lead by the wrong stuff. As a result the music is diluted with bull-s%$t. None of the young generation apprentice under anyone. (cont...)

  • what is it he asks the tenor players in the start ?? which player

  • He said 'Hank Mobley' for tenor.

  • @YoungJiBest and?

  • Trombone and no Vic Dickenson reference? well since he mentioned Lee Morgan I will cut him some slack. : )

  • Hope everybody really listens!

  • What are the odds? Today I bought the "incredible Winding trombones" :-)

  • All I can say is AMEN!

  • Man, Mulgrew speaks the truth!

  • I don't think ANYONE can explain how to develop a good jazz vocabulary this well in 4 minutes like Mulgrew just did right here.

    Great video!

  • I miss Mulgrew.....best time of my life .......telling me whar NHOP would have done........

  • It starts with a riff...

  • The name of the ALto guy is Sunny Stit?

  • Sonny Stitt

  • Sonny Stitt

  • genius of our time

  • invaluable advice. thank you
