After knowing 2 more powerfull saiyans were on their way to earth, Goku trained under king kai as he was dead aftert the battle with Raditz remember? He learned the art of the Kaio-ken+Spirit bomb to defeat the Nappa & Vegeta. Vegeta believe that there would be no amount of training enough for a low class, to defeat a elite, Goku pwned hes ass and then gets pwned by a giant ape vegeta.

Turles' age is unknown, though he appears to be around same age as Goku. But he is older than Goku (as Saiyans age slower than human, in order to stay younger longer and keep fighting), seeing as he abandoned Frieza long before Goku was born.
