See, idiots? He uses an amp for his tone, and axe fx for FX. So, idiots, stop trying to get good sounds from digital crap: it's not possible. Get a valve amp and shut up.
what i dont understand is this: i dialed in a very very similair sound to his mark v with my mesa dual rectifier, but when i record it i cant seem to get the sound he gets?? i even edited quite a bit. maybe im not placing mics properly?? i tried a few different micing ideas. Can anyone help please????
@brandonpaul89 So much of guitar tone comes from your hands. You could give Petrucci a squier and plug a cable into a horse's ass and he will still sound like him. Gear helps but it's mostly how you play.
@brandonpaul89 The reason you can't get something similar is because he's using Mark V and your using a Dual Rectifier. That should be obvious. They're two completely different amps
I know Petrucci uses an SM57 off axis one inch from the grill right on the outside of the dust cap as well as a Sennheiser MD421 in the same position. When its mixed he usually brings the 57 slightly above the 421. Depending on editing and what tools you use, try to get your sound as close as possible and not relying on a lot of EQ in mixing.
@brandonpaul89 Also the rec is voiced way differently from the Mark Series.
While we may have percieve it as a similar sound to something else without the audio microscope that is recording, when we hear the amp and everything else is stripped aside it turns out it actually wasn't, and the differences between one amp and another are more noticable. I guess its a case of "Right tools for the right job."
It's so nice to be able to hear the sound of JP's guitar this time around, without excessive gain or swimming in effects. The new album is a great advert for the Mark V.
i love him. just hearing him say his own name is enough for me

Rectos sound like rectos, Marks sound like Marks.
If you want the tone, buy right amp for the right job.

@brandonpaul89 First of all, the sound of a recording ALWAYS differs from the real thing.
Mic placement is important. In order to get a roomy sound, you can place your mic facing the speakers but further away.
Moreover, you always have to dial your amp differently. In most cases you need less Gain and less Bass than on stage.
You simply have to experiment with settings and mic placement. Search for recording tutorials, too. Helps a lot!!
Note: ALL rhythm tracks have to be doubled!

@brandonpaul89 I'm thinking, and this is just a thought,... but, you are not John Petrucci, and therein lies the problem.

"Any time you hear a guitar solo, that's the Mark V in C plus mode..."
That's funny, I just assumed it was simply John Petrucci in killzone mode...?

Breaking All Illusions is amazing.
The Mark V has to be Mesa's top selling amp.
