  • Photoshopmama you're awesome. I've been tryin to figure out the soft black & white touch a long time... Thanks again!:)

  • your tutorials are a life saver! thanks!!

  • Hi Mama! thanks for this excellent tutorial, i followed your simple steps and my son's photo became master piece! thanks and keep up the good work. regards MK.

  • do you know how to use GIMP, can I do this utilizing GIMP?

    thanks!

  • Sorry, I've never used GIMP, mainly because it can't co-exist without severe problems with Photoshop on the same system.

  • @genesys117 You could duplicate the layer, desaturate it, then erase parts to reveal the color layer behind it.

  • Great! Thanks a lot!

I have a question though, in CS4 (on a Mac) ctrl+I (+I) doesn't work for inversion. When I search in the commands on "inver" it only gives me "invert visible surface" (which is gray and unselectable), "inverse" (shift++I) (also unselectable), and "new adjustment layer: invert" (which makes a negative of the picture).

I would be even more thankful if you could help me with this! :)

  • To invert on a Mac it is Command +I (The "apple" key) Sorry if I forgot to mention that or said it incorrectly. The actual key that is Control on a Mac is like the "Right-click mous" on a PC. Control on a PC = Command (apple key) on a Mac. Right click on a PC=the key that says "Control" or "Ctrl" on a Mac.

  • Thanks for you quick reply! I know how the basic keys work on a Mac and how it relates to Windows. What I'm saying is that "command+I" doesn't work at all when I'm on the Gradient Map layer. So then I went to "help" where a handy search field is present to search through all possible commands, and typing "inver" only gave me three results (see my previous message). So I guess it's because I have CS4 and you're using CS3, and that they have changed this command. Or I'm doing something wrong...

  • I have CS4, too! and I have a Mac PowerBook. Gimme a minute, I'll go check and get back to. Sometimes on these upgrades they switch around shortcuts or add other modifier keys to the basic. I'll be back!

  • Checked on both Mac and PC CS4. The actual location of the Invert command on all versions is under the top menu-Image>Adjustments>Invert where the shortcut is also listed as Comand I on Mac and Control I on PC. Make sure if you are trying to invert a mask that the mask is highlighted also says "Mask" in the document title bar. Also if you've created custom shortcuts, you may have overriden the default shortcuts. Does this help?

  • Thanks a lot for your effort! :)

I got it, my selection contained only the layer and not the mask (I thought that it' practically the same thing in such cases), so now the shortcut works too. Again, thanks a lot for your quick and very helpful help, not to mention the great videos!!!

    THANkS!

  • Its a good tutorial but next time try and speed it up a little. I think I could have done it in one video. no offence. I guess its better for the newer people.

  • yeh, same, I just waited for the video to load completely and dragged the progress slider to "fast forward" the video the whole way, i got it in 20 seconds.

anyone well versed in photoshop knows there are plenty of ways to separate one object from another, so I noticed she used layer masks completely , okay cool

  • i like it either way - nice tutorial
