@pyannaguy Caricature is moreso the overall expression of the sum of someone's whole being IMO. It goes far beyond just mere exaggeration of someone's facial features, but done properly, it exaggerates someone's entire character. I've done the caricatures of the entire crew that I work with for the trading cards on my job and while everyone else looks crazy to various degrees, I drew one about as straight as a portrait with a serious look on her. Reason for that...
@darknight068 ...being is that when put alongside the rest of the cards she stands out as overly serious, hence the main exaggeration being her true to life demeanor rather than "jacking" something up on her face just to be doing it like I initially started doing. There's great caricature that goes very far with exaggeration and there's great work that looks more portrait like but still hits the key elements of someone to make it NOT a portrait.
@darknight068 I agree with you, 100%, when that's the case - in other words, when you've really gotten to know someone's character and traits, etc. But, I've seen too many on-the-spot, terrific caricatures of total strangers on the street drawn by excellent artists to think that one HAS to know all about someone's total being to do an excellent caricature. I'm guessing you've seen lots of those.
@pyannaguy Very true. What I've found though with pictures like that is that the artist in question is extremely good at observing body language and mannerisms during the sketch itself. They're able to react properly to what a person is giving them and the sketches, whether the person loves or hates it in the end, show it. I know in theme park sketching, with the right crowd that level of observation will allow you to snatch sales away from the cookie cutter guys.
@HeroesAtDawn Not if you're doing this in a theme park, which is what I'm thinking this is more representative of. Out there, you have to bang then out in 3 to 5 minutes a face, there's no time for elaborate undersketching.
Now as a more comprehensive piece, yeah I agree. There's little to no study of the face here at all and it shows throughout the process as many key relationships are dead wrong.
Anyway, without meaning to sound too critical, the very first thing I noticed was that the artist drew a really long, thin face to represent the subject who actually has the opposite kind of face - more blocky and squarish with rounded corners. Oh, well - you can learn something from everything.

for doing caricatures it is what YOU see , you may not see the same thing that everyone else sees.
I draw tame caricatures and need to learn to exaggerate more.

Peach you can do it with a pencil but should be done with a pen after and fix things and make them permanent! pencil will fade a way it is only temp.

So many artists on the web seem to be lefties.
Anyway, without meaning to sound too critical, the very first thing I noticed was that the artist drew a really long, thin face to represent the subject who actually has the opposite kind of face - more blocky and squarish with rounded corners. Oh, well - you can learn something from everything.
