Thank You! You are one of the few to play, IMO, a very challenging riff on youtube. Can you PLEASE listen to the song titled "Number One" by Patrice Rushen and then show us how to play the guitar riff on youtube? I have asked many guitarist on youtube to play this song but none have stepped up to the plate. I'm confident that you can do it from what I just saw and you appear to be the type of person that wants to help guitarist such as myself. Will you do it? Let me know either way. Thanks!
I remember that song! I don't know if I have the opportunity to finesse all the riffing the guitarist is doing, but I listened to it and picked out a few chords and notes if you want to play around. I think the focus is on Cminor and Fminor with the lead note riffs centered around that Eb to F. Hope that helps!
@IsleyTribute Thank you for your response. It sounds like that when you have the time you are willing to do a demo on that song. Good! When you do this demo please let me know.In the meantime I will try the chords that you've mentioned. When you get a chance, listen to" Rising From The Ashes" by Erie Isley. It is the only album I believe that he only made. Thanks again!
Minor chords sound mooder. You are lowering the 3rd of a 1-3-5 chord (1-b3-5)
The best wayt o hear the difference is to play the same chord betwen major and minor alternating over and over again and listen until you har the difference:
Mr. Buie, after watching some of your clips it reminded me of a song I wanted to learn a long time ago. It's titled Funky Ride by Outkast from the early 90's.It's heavily influenced by the Isleys and Funkadelic and I'm sure you will find it quite interesting.Any help with chords/scales on it would be greatly appreciated.I've tried to find info for it on the web to no luck. And if there's anyone on youtube with the chops and knowledge of soul/R&B to figure it out it's gotta be you.
Great posts! One my favorite guitarists.Isleys' music and style is very emotional and melodic and you sir pull it of very well(for not being a real guitar player you got me fooled).I was looking for some of their live shows and saw your posts, glad I did!Look forward to seeing some more.Great music and excellent job with the lessons. Thanks for sharing your experience!
Dude, you deserve a Nobel prize for musical nicetey - than you a zillion for shown me this, I;ve been fiddling with it for years. That tune is a KILLER!
Not a real guitar player? Excellent vid's! What about the two chords immediately before going into chorus with the D9#7 and E9#7? These Isley lessons are phenomenal, Thank you so much for the insight!

Dear Michael, i just wanna say that i luv this Isley tribute stuffs what you did ! I am from Europe, Hungary - Budapest. In this part of the world the Isleys and other soul and funk joints are not so popular like in the states; but i still with my statement - this type of music is a real masterpiece !
I ws stationed in Scotland for two years and the folk over there LOVED the little four-piece band we put together. Folk over there have great taste in music, when they wanna ;-)
Without cheching the recording, you know ... I can't dispute that .... CM7 and Em are extremely close, sonically. So, I may have missed that. And Ernie DOES hit a lot of Maj7 chords. I love them.
Thanks ... I'll double-check that when I get to pull the CD out.
Yea, this is good stuff. Ernie Isley has always been one of my favorite guitarists. He was doing this stuff way back before a lot of guys knew what guitar playing is all about. You've increased my repertoire quite nicely. My jamming buddies eyes lit up when I busted this one out last week. My fingers still hurt from my Ernie-esque soloing. Thanks man!! and keep up the good work
@Blugave Ernie Isley learnt alot of his stuff directly from Jimi Hendrix when Jimi played in the Isleys (circa 1964). The solo on this tune really proves it. Reminds me of Jimi's "Machine Gun" when Ern hits that really high note. This is a great video..wonderfully explained.
you're not a real guitar player??? get the hell outta hear...you blew that out the box man!!! love it love it...thanks for the inspiration...will try those when I get home...sweeeet bro!!!! love those 7th#9th chords..also correct me if Im wrong but Funkadelic uses the same chord E7#9 in One Nation...love that chord..niiiice
Anyway you could break that lead down a little slower? Is that just your standard blues scale (1-flat3-4-flat 5-5-flat 7)? Its so fast I can barely hear it : )
Thanks a lot! I only know a microcosm of what others know guitar-wise. And playing portions of Isley tunes does not compare to the breadth of Ernie's talent, is what I mean by that. I appreciate your encouragement! :)
He's using his standard licks on that one .. perhaps I should dig a little deeper into what I hear going on when he plays some of those riffs, and post them up :)
That would be awesome. I love his style I just cant quite figure out whats going on so yeh it would be cool if you made a video of that! Keep of the good work I like what you're doing!
OK ... I will try to do that for you. Keep in mind I'm not practiced-up at giving video guitar lessons. This vid is really more for people who already know a lot, but want to see how to do an Isley tune.
But, I will try to be very specific on this solo for you. You teach me, and tell me how what I post up next helps you. :)
Ernie is sick in the head, he's a HUGE influence on my playing along with Hazel, Santana, Vernon Reid, Hendrix, vai, tom morello, van halen..i'm annoyed that a lot of rock guitarists gets all of the accolades. black guitarists gets overlooked.
people like living colour inspred me to start my all black female band "Outlaw Starr"
I checked out some of your links. Very cool stuff. I've always felt black musicians were stuffed into the corner of a tight stereotype. I approached lead singer of my gospel band about doing a song tinged with metal, and though he was polite about it, he was doubtful.
I thought "you kiddin' me?" The Violinaires were known for innovative sound back in the day; why not bust out for real? Oh, well. People can have limited thinking sometimes. :*( I still beleive he can think outside the box.

@IsleyTribute
Meant to say "moodier", not mooder ;)
Some people even use the term "sad". Use of minor scales over major chord progressions results in a "bluesy" sound, for instance.

Learning by playing with and asking others helps. When I played in a couple R&B bands, I sat down with Isley songs and listened, tried to reproduce the sound, listened some more, played more ... you just keep doing until it sounds right. Sometimes you are a little different from the original, but music is about variation, too, right? :)

Listening to the bass line helps ... lots of times the bass is playing the root of the chord. Also, the more chords you have in your own arsenal, the better you know your scales, the more likely you will better analyze songs you learn by ear.

Of course, when you can find tablature for a song already, that helps tremendously. But, lots of times, those tabs have the simplest chord form and it's not what the artist really played.
