Well, Cenk, normally I agree with everything you say, but think about the way people in America are treated for being even a little overweight and how these contestants look at the end of the show and in their update shots. Obesity is a huge health hazard. Out of all the obesity-related diseases, the top one is Eyeburn, which comes from looking at fat people naked. Since people can't control their weight (thanks to jobs that make them sit down all day), obese people must shut their eyes real tight when they are naked and near a mirror or they will become ill.

i was appalled by the show as well. it teaches overweight people that losing weight is painful and nearly impossible, requiring a boot camp style drama. it confirms everything fat people fear about weight loss.
i think losing weight with a more long-term, less drastic plan would make people less afraid to try.
if i was fat and saw that show i would probably think "i could never do that". in that sense i think it does more harm than good, even though the brave participants seem to benefit.
The problem is people want these "losers" to lose weight purely for aesthetic reasons. Crash diets are unhealthy and cause rebounds with more weight gained than lost.
The real solution is long term healthy dietary habits and a minimum of 1 hour of daily exercise. They'll lose the weight naturally that way, but more importantly, they'll be healthy and live longer.

One element of the show that bothers me is how you get VOTED off, and the motive for eliminating other fatties is fear that they have more potential to lose than you do. It is not just about self-improvement - it is about eliminating competition to win a big cash prize. If it really was just about helping people feel good about themselves and improve their health, I would love it...and it would be a BBC show.
I think I've only watched one episode of "The Biggest Loser" but I doubt it's worst than the Bachelor series and every other god awful spin-off.
I also think Cenk is missing the point of the show. Seems like he just wants eye candy. I don't think many people would laugh at people trying to be healthy and lose weight. On the contrary, I think many people would encourage them.

And to get over your guilt, you're redirecting to the general public, but in reality I really doubt that people who watch this show feel the way you do. Another thing, they're trying to calculate how much weight they're lost, and looking at his body is one very good indication of it, that's all there is to it.
Not many want to see these large people with their shirts off, but in a way it may make both thin and large people reconsider their health position. If someone is morbidly obese like the contestants and they see them it may turn a light on in their heads.

So-called reality shows in bad taste are not new on TV. Back in the 1950s there was a show called "Queen for a Day" that aired in the late afternoon. Three women would come on the show, each with her own story of despair and woe. Then the audience would vote for the one with the saddest story and the "queen" would win a new washing machine, or so. A cheap prize for the biggest loser of the day. Cheap and cheesy shows are, sadly, nothing new.

Yes, these people have signed up to be on this show, as in any reality TV show, but there is so much scripting that still goes on that these are actually Unreality Shows. And it goes on in so many areas of entertainment these days - even the Olympics. Look at the female atheletes and what they are required to wear to compete in Beach Vollyball and even track and field. They all have great bodies and can pull it off, but they don't have a choice than to wear the same style clothing.
It's so obvious that Cenk is not being objective but has a personal issue with weight. I'm sure there are shows that are SO MUCH more degrading than the biggest loser. Somehow it made me a bit uncomfortable watching Cenk's see-through explanation for justifying his opinion.

Cenk, you didn't even mention the eliminations based on vote, the stupid competitions they do for "immunity" and "temptations" where they try to get the contestants to stuff themselves with junk food for the opportunity to stab their competitiors in the back. I'd respect a show that was genuinely about the contestants losing weight, but The Biggest Loser is as worthless as any other show, they just use overweight people to try and get sympathy and immunity from criticism.
The part that I believe Cenk overlooked is where the host will bring up some depressing moment in their life to try and get them to cry. Overall I like the concept of the show but the whole back-story crying thing I don't agree with.
I do not find the show degrading at all, and I doubt anyone who watches the show regular actually laughs at the contestants. My mom and I both find the show inspirational to get out, move, and eat healthier ourselves. And the reason why they take their shirts off is so they can show their changes each week.

Cenk, I thought the same thing about TBL when I first heard of it, but after watching a season and having it motivate me enough to lose 20 lbs in one month, I have to say that you're really being too rash in your judgment of it. TBL inspires millions of people to lose weight and they have awesome programs like the pound for pound contest where they match ever pound you lose with a pound of food to feeding the hungry. Unlike most bullshit reality shows, this one really does help people.
I completely agree with you. The show has gone so many seasons because it gets good ratings. And it doesn't get good ratings because the viewers are laughing at the contestants, not at all. The majority of the viewers watch the show for inspiration to lose weight themselves and go from an unhealthy lifestyle to a healthy one.

As someone who has at one time been obese(50lbs ago), watching the biggest loser is an inspiration to keep going to the gym. I think that it is a very positive show.

They should have a different name for the show and not parade overweight people around with no shirt.
They would still be able to acheive the same goal without embarassing these people on national television.

One element of the show that bothers me is how you get VOTED off, and the motive for eliminating other fatties is fear that they have more potential to lose than you do. It is not just about self-improvement - it is about eliminating competition to win a big cash prize. If it really was just about helping people feel good about themselves and improve their health, I would love it...and it would be a BBC show.

I think I've only watched one episode of "The Biggest Loser" but I doubt it's worst than the Bachelor series and every other god awful spin-off.
I also think Cenk is missing the point of the show. Seems like he just wants eye candy. I don't think many people would laugh at people trying to be healthy and lose weight. On the contrary, I think many people would encourage them.

I haven't seen the show... but I would imagine that they make them take their shirts off to visually show their progress from week to week.
On one side it seems kind of degrading, but on another side its inspirational to see people lose all that weight and to visually see their bodies improve.

Let's say, if "soccerdude" was a contestant on the show and didn't want to take his shirt off, HE WOULDN'T DO IT. What's the worst they can do... kick you off? Honestly, I've never watched the show. The fact remains that a rational person is capable of judging what is degradation, torture, discrimination etc, without wobbling between conclusions based on him/her being or not being a potential subject. This is a skill that you proudly claim to be lacking.

The name Biggest Loser, in my opinion, is irony. It's not pointing and laughing at them cause' they're losers in the sense that you're implying, that kind of loser would be you. "Biggest Loser", people who have been considered losers some time in their lives by people like you, now they're losing weight, so the term "Loser" is being redefined much the way their health is being reshaped. And to get over your guilt, you're redirecting to the general public, but in reality I really doubt that people who watch this show feel the way you do. Another thing, they're trying to calculate how much weight they're lost, and looking at his body is one very good indication of it, that's all there is to it.

Not many want to see these large people with their shirts off, but in a way it may make both thin and large people reconsider their health position. If someone is morbidly obese like the contestants and they see them it may turn a light on in their heads.

So-called reality shows in bad taste are not new on TV. Back in the 1950s there was a show called "Queen for a Day" that aired in the late afternoon. Three women would come on the show, each with her own story of despair and woe. Then the audience would vote for the one with the saddest story and the "queen" would win a new washing machine, or so. A cheap prize for the biggest loser of the day. Cheap and cheesy shows are, sadly, nothing new.

This kinda reminds me of a comedy show, dont remember which, where they had a hidden camera sketch where they took in parents to see if they would sign there -kids- up for a "reality show".
They trailer they where shown was basically "Lord of the flyies"!
Surprise, surprise. Some parents where actually signing up there kids. Having the mentality "Hmm, my kid is though enough for that. He will survive physical and mental torture..."

Yes, these people have signed up to be on this show, as in any reality TV show, but there is so much scripting that still goes on that these are actually Unreality Shows. And it goes on in so many areas of entertainment these days - even the Olympics. Look at the female atheletes and what they are required to wear to compete in Beach Vollyball and even track and field. They all have great bodies and can pull it off, but they don't have a choice than to wear the same style clothing.

Cenk, you didn't even mention the eliminations based on vote, the stupid competitions they do for "immunity" and "temptations" where they try to get the contestants to stuff themselves with junk food for the opportunity to stab their competitiors in the back. I'd respect a show that was genuinely about the contestants losing weight, but The Biggest Loser is as worthless as any other show, they just use overweight people to try and get sympathy and immunity from criticism.

The part that I believe Cenk overlooked is where the host will bring up some depressing moment in their life to try and get them to cry. Overall I like the concept of the show but the whole back-story crying thing I don't agree with.

I do not find the show degrading at all, and I doubt anyone who watches the show regular actually laughs at the contestants. My mom and I both find the show inspirational to get out, move, and eat healthier ourselves. And the reason why they take their shirts off is so they can show their changes each week.

Cenk, I thought the same thing about TBL when I first heard of it, but after watching a season and having it motivate me enough to lose 20 lbs in one month, I have to say that you're really being too rash in your judgment of it. TBL inspires millions of people to lose weight and they have awesome programs like the pound for pound contest where they match ever pound you lose with a pound of food to feeding the hungry. Unlike most bullshit reality shows, this one really does help people.

I completely agree with you. The show has gone so many seasons because it gets good ratings. And it doesn't get good ratings because the viewers are laughing at the contestants, not at all. The majority of the viewers watch the show for inspiration to lose weight themselves and go from an unhealthy lifestyle to a healthy one.

As someone who has at one time been obese(50lbs ago), watching the biggest loser is an inspiration to keep going to the gym. I think that it is a very positive show.
and he has his shirt on because clothes add weight. You should really weigh your self naked, but censors wouldn't really allow that.
