You people have to understand that the mom's attitude changed completely when Peter had her partying with him and his dope addict friends. Believe me, a woman will do anything for a guy who introduses her to that side of lfe. He probably had his friends doing lines of coke of her ass. Ahh the memories.
seriously, who was the "real" asshole? their real Dad was the one that left his nice wife and kids for a younger woman! then never spends quality time with his kids! Sam was laid back and partied, and he did try to win them over! LOL
@KELLY,i agree, but had weller's character been better written, and had a more original ending, this would have been a great film.At first,it made him seem like despite his flaws,he was really trying, but they just made him into a cliched monster.
Sam gets a bad rap,he tried his best, but that punk kid drove him nuts.Who's to say sam despite all of his faults wasn't at least trying to make it work?Ok he was a drug dealer..but nobodies perfect.
The mom was sooooo weak. Guys like Sam look for women like that, but she continued to let him dominate the household so it's just as much her fault as it is his. The kids always get the shitty side of that.
@MeBenHalpin a bitch. the sad thing is that there are parents out there who will take a b/f or g/f side instead of their own kids. that's when you know they have effed up priorities.
@addicted2you20 The boys should have left home, though where would they go, don't think their father judging from his brief appearance at the beginning, gave toss about them either, think they would have been better off in care.
@MeBenHalpin yeah dude, so what's a kid to do in that situation? my parents never divorced, so i never experienced that crap personally. but i can understand the frustration that kids must feel when they're stuck in a situation like that.
@addicted2you20 Its real tough one, remember at one point of the film, Brian (Corey Haim) suggested to Jake, that they actually should runaway, it must be horrible, when kid contemplates doing that because he don't feel safe in his own home, when his own mother has know control of the situation.

One thing that I think everyone can agree upon is that this is a vastly underrated film. And I may be in the minority, but I like the ending.

Am I alone in thinking that Peter Weller (Sam) looks a lot like Joe Montana?

@TheGatorfan93 Sam was a violent criminal...Both Jake and Brian knew that this loser was bad news...too bad their mom was such a fool.
