@penningtonant Because it's a solid, versatile, crunchy rock rhythm tone that's not quite metal but not quite vintage. This video is just a crude solid-state semblance to the "Dookie" modded Marshall Plexis Green Day actually uses, and the author of the vid's EQ is off, so of course it's not as good. This video sucks, but it isn't a bad tone at all.
For one, use Old School 60's-70's Marshall's Amps, Humbuckers, 60's Stratocaster, Medium-Picks, Lots of Backing treble. I figured this out from constantly messing around with my stuff.
Great video man! To add to this: when I found some old photos from early Green Day-gigs, I saw a Marshall JCM900 behind Billie Joe, and at the Woodstock '94 show he was using a Marshall Plexi. But here's a tip for y'all: for the Green Day tone, indeed use a humbucked guitar, a valved Marshall-like amp, but don't 'scoop out' the middle tone, and use lots of treble. Cheers!
You're using the second channel which is based off a Plexi..... How Billie Joe got his sound, ripping off the brown sound, a boosted Plexi, or a Marshall boosting a Marshall...... Wish I could afford a studio faded as well, instead, I bought a Standard and a tube amp with a boost pedal..... Green Day tone? All you need is a tube screamer to get the "Brown Sound"
Hey I was wondering how to get the tone with an Epiphone Les Paul (there is the
Gain" and "Volume" tuners on the guitar. My amp is a Marshall Amp that has clean, and then on the Overdrive settings there's "Tone" "Volume" and "Gain." Please help :D
Ok I have a fender mustang 1 amp and it's got 24 presets. And Metal 2000 with the treble at 8 depending on the guitar you have and the gain at 8 and everything else at 10 sounds just like Green Day. And it comes with free recording software
Yeah Man, i got a Line 6 75 watt Spider III amp, these setting sound loud as fuck, but for my amp its not Green Day tone from american idiot era, my amp sounds great for the old stuff
Dude, it's way easy 2 get the GD sound. U can get one tone that fits with every album they put out. Get a guitar that with a humbucker in the bridge and one that isnt crappy(Midrange priced Squiers and epiphones work great if u r on a budget) or install a humbucker( Invader, hot rails, lil 59). Turn volume and tone on the guitar to 10. On any decent amp, mid and treb to 10. bass and precense just around 6 or 7. High or lead gain on, gain set to 5 or 6. Universal GD tone!
Agrees. Try to save up for like a Marshall haze 50 watt tube or something, and turn all the knobs up and put the bass knob on about 7, and you have the greenday tone. That extra distortion helped alot btw
lol i have a yamaha pacifica and a roland micro cube amp, and i just cant seem to get a good green day tone, does anyone know how to get it, lol btw i know my equipment is cheap but i cant afford to buy better equipment
i hope this is right, but in my personal opinion, green day seems to have a more bass-filled sound to me. id say the bass needs to 7/8 ish. Although, if u want to play blink 182, this is PERFECT
thank you dude... im going to buy an epiphone les paul jr or a epiphone les paul special 2.. which is better for Green Day tone? the junior is cheaper, but i dont know..
Anyone ever tell you, that you kinda look like RJ burger? lol

green day has good tone but the tone in video is shit mate
hahahahahaha102 1 month ago
@hahahahahaha102 Yep.
The closest I can get on my solid state Fender is: Treble 10, Mids 8, Bass 6, gain 6, but mine's still missing something [and not just a tube amp].
Anyway, hope that helps.

Ofcourse, those simple amp settings don't apply to a line6. the price u pay for versitility is that nothing's simple.

My preset for Green Day is Treble10 Bass7-9.
Now i have a cheap crappy amp that cost like $40 so it might not sound so well on other amps but this is just advice to those who are watching.

wait a sec.... you recommend a humbucker for a greenday sound? while everybody knows that the best green day sound coes from a P-90?
