@leprincebeaumont. I have to agree as best I can understand you. But I don't even think its that well schooled. Both Agnes Baltsa and Shirley Verrett to my ears had the combination of truly seamless legato and hauteur that this musical writing is calling for. I'm sure DiDonato is a nice lady but on the basis of this sample I wouldn't want to hear her sing this in the theater. I get she's trying to bring drama but the singing sounds mannered and effortful to me .
She is a soprano sfogato. Meaning a soprano who can do both mezzo and higher, in short almost everything. Colbran was the most famous soprano sfogato in history.
Very up-tempo cabaletta, but I do suppose that is the point of a cabaletta, though. The soprano is quite good. They should have given her the second verse as well, but it probably wouldn't have worked with the staging. Bravi, tutti.
Even suggesting that Joyce needs a microphone is totally ridiculous. Her voice carries extremely well with it. It's such a well founded instrument, with such agility and wonderful colour, that I am addicted to her sound.
Why would you compare her to anyone else. She's a pure talent and a brilliant performer at her prime. Let yourself enjoy and let yourself get seduced by her singing and acting. BRAVISSIMA!
No, no no! She is only "just like" a Joyce DiDonato... a beautiful voice, perfectly placed and controlled. A voice that will be one of "the greats." Please do not insult her by comparing her with any other singers!
To compare DiDonato to the great Giuletta Simionato is no insult. It is the highest compliment for a contralto or mezzo singer because from the 1950s until the end of the century, Siminonato was the yardstick by which contraltos and mezzos were measured, especially in the bel canto repertoire.
good, then go listen to that recording, and once you're ready to make a real comment about this video in particular and not look like a total fool for pointlessly downing this recording for no reason, then people won't "thumbs down" you so badly.
Thanks for clearing that up. I was under the impression Elizabeta was sung by a soprano, since I have the 78 of Beverly Sills and Eileen Farrell of Maria Stuarda. Farrell is Elizabetta on the recording.
Really Elizabetta could be sung by either mezzo or soprano... just as the title role Maria could be sung by either, just as Janet Baker did. The main point is that the singer has to be damn good no matter their vocal range!

Is it possible for her to be any less fabulous? She's so ridiculous, I love her. And she makes a very striking Mary.

i heard she is singing the title role at the met! i wonder if she is doing the lower key version
harpguy18 2 years ago
Perhaps, but truly the lower key is only half step lower in the first aria and a whole step in the prayer. Also it is more florid overall.

The greatest recording of Maria Stuarda was Joan Sutherland and Huguette Tourangeau as Elisabetta

Who was Maria in this production?
petelovesbevsills 4 years ago
is this donizetti's maria stuarda? I didnt know it could be sung by a mezzo. Joyce, as always is great!
turandot82 4 years ago
Since the Joyce is redheaded and QE I was redheaded and she is singing about Maria and Elsibetta is mezzo, my guess is she is singing Elsibetta.
