to clear up the reason WHY it doesnt work - ipod touches and iphones use multi- touch screens meaning you can touch more than one thing at once (as proven in many apps) this trick only works on devices like most touch screen mobile phones and Nintendo DSs because they do not use multi-touch technology and you can only touch one thing at a time - so if your fingers are in seperate places and pressing on at equal force, it will balance out and press whatever is directly between your fingers.
