@Natasha8xox well im no expert but i would have to say, judging from the video, that it causes the heart to freeze and stop beating so that they can replace the valve without the heart beating and pushing blood into his/her chest.
It would be nice to see a post-operative Transesophageal Echo to see if there is any regurgitant flow through the new valve. Otherwise beautiful operation.
Brilliant video. Thank you. I've had 4 sets of surgery, 2 valve replacements (1 prosthetic, one auto & homograph. Brilliant to watch it. Harrowing but brilliant!
I've been told that if you're really quiet you can actually hear the valve make a soft clicking noise when your heart beats. I watched a live heart valve replacement done before and it was really fascinating.
@samo530 you don't have to be quiet, my mechanical heart valve was audible for 12 years, I really missed it when it was gone. It sounded like a watch.
My gf has a valve problem and she is always coughing and having chest pains any way she can get a vavle surgery that can help extend life, and stop the pains ? and permanite valves ? Help ! message me back plz
@bhernandez442 Tissue valve = less lasting,no blood thinners
Metal valve = longer lasting, blood thinners.
But your body rejects them differently. One may last longer than the other depending on the person, but that's the common results, If she recenly had a valve replaced then talk to a cardiologist, the coughing would be from the breathing tube. It should pass though. If it's not then talk with the surgons. They can almost always fix it. But there is no permanant lasting valve.
Amazing, is the name mitroflow bioprosthetic valve a reflection** of Dr Starrs' work? I would assume it is because his design was originally for bicuspid replacement and this surgery is replacement of aortic semilunar.

The transparent tubing is for drainage, the tubing comes out below your sternum When it gets removed it feels pretty funny. You are awake and the nurse just grabs a hold and pulls, then picks the scab twice a day.
Thanks for posting. I just had this done last month (a No. 23 St. Jude, with a cow patch) and am now fully (90%) recovered, a month ahead of schedule. I appreciate this because I really would have liked to have watched it done, but obviously a local anaesthetic wasn't possible, and had I brought the subject up my surgeon would probably have sent me for a psychiatric evaluation. So this is great.
@Niceboy3377 No, not really, or hardly at all. They keep you on Oxycodone for a couple of days, but on leaving the hospital after 5 days, I pretty much felt nothing, except when I would stretch. You can't lift but 5 or 10 pounds the first month, because it puts pressure on the sternum. And for a couple months sleeping on your side will create a couple hours of such pressure the next day. But I'm now almost 4 months out of surgery and completely free of even that bruised feeling.
@rachu1991 They put ice on the heart to help cool it down, this lowers the heart rate. The actual mechanism that stops it from beating is called cold cardioplegia, this is when potassium chloride is delivered to the heart, and that's what arrests the muscle. The ice itself isn't what stops the heart, the ice just cools it.
that is awesome.

@Natasha8xox it depresses the beat of heart so that surgeon's hands can do their work more carefully!

@Natasha8xox It helps keep the heart tissue from dying.
