  • The best !! Ever !

  • I've met Joe twice in Nash. He is the best since we lost Stevie-Ray!

  • howl long does this picking technique take to do reasonably well? i can only play it really slow right now. Help!

  • @tonictaster just keep practicing when i use to learn scale runs like these i would practice them real slow and then over time build it up, trust me youll be able to play this run like joe in a couple of weeks depnding on how much you practice

  • @judoman5899 thanks a lot! :)

  • great guy great guitar all round great vid

  • I love listening to how great Joe is when he is just plugged straight into a little amp (in this case a valve junior), no effects no switching between 4 amps. Just Joe and his great playing ability and charming personality.

    LOVE IT!!

  • Hey I love the white suits :)

  • He's so fucking good at guitar.

  • He sounds like john c reilly

  • This man is the man

  • IF joe bonamassa tells you that he is going to show you a simple lick, prepare for a crazy impossible pentatonic shred

  • @HolyGK That lick is only a mid tempo 16th note type thing he ripped from EJ. It's not very hard if you have any right hand technique. He totally ripped EJ though and ought to give credit.

  • What pentatonic mode was he using there?

  • @jayjaygibbs no mode, just Gm pentatonic. Learn the 5 shapes and you'll see it.

  • @jayjaygibbs

if he's in the key of "G" then the mode will be the "G" Aeolian mode also known as the natural harmonic minor scale. Played as a pentatonic instead of diatonic, its basic the exact same shape as the minor pentatonic box 1. The difference is that its a major sound as opposed to the minor sound and the position of the root notes are different - so most licks played there will end on a different position to position to those played on the blues/minor scale box 1.

  • Thank you for posting the Joe Bonamassa Guitar Lessons !

So is Guitar Edge Magazine the same corporation as Hal Leonard Publishing and GuitarInstructorcom ?

  • thank you joe, so much

  • Joe: You know what I mean?

    Man: Yeeesss...

  • "He is a great player" - bit of an understatement? haha

  • John Mayer is good but joe is true.

  • @SRV1DOORS1HENDRIX1 i think john mayer could have but something happen, prob women lol

  • THE BEST

  • What's the definition of 'making it'? Is it winning grammy's? Is it selling platinum albums? Is it playing stadiums? ........... Nope, it's walking into a guitar shop and handing over 2600 dollars for a new guitar. And why? Because u had 20 mins to spare. Hey Joe I went shopping today too, yep, I bought some new fucking picks!!!!!

  • "People are going JESUS how fast was that?"

You have no idea, Joe :p

Gonna see him soon, March 19th, you cannot get here faster ...

  • I just met Joe last night at one of his shows and was amazed at what an awesome guy he is outside of the show!!

  • hey guys, thanks so much for your support. Please go to the Official Joe Bonamassa YouTube Channel and subscribe!

  • i love bonamassa but that guitar sounds shitty

  • Not So Easy To Catch ! Joe Plays Very Fast...

  • can someone please tab this? plzzz

  • Joe Bonamassa is definitely under-rated, and is a living legend.

  • Wow, that Valve Junior sounds AWEsome!

  • @curlywannabe it's an epi

  • tab please

  • he said blow me,

  • What mode is Joe using here?

  • Well he's just using Gm pentatonic patterns, but on the G string he adds from the diatonic minor. For the main lick.

The notes are typical. What's more unique is the EJ picking, and he changes the strokes when he does it slow so everyone doesn't cop it(lol). Watch how he starts with an upstroke when he plays it fast, but not when slow. Joe's tryin' to be sneaky. Just watch his right hand to pick up on the proper strokes. Without those, you won't get that nice conviction.

  • @buddastrat Dude, I totally get what you're saying, but I seriously doubt Joe's making an effort to hide anything. He's just slowing it down and the picking is what it is, he's just showing the notes, man. It's blues, nothing left to hide there brother.

  • @LSGoCards7 he's not using any modes actually. when he says "mode", really mean position.

  • That's the way I play too. It's a rip off of EJ. Especially when you do the fast pentatonic sequence and end on either an octave or a fourth like he's doing. Funny, he gives props to Mclaughlin but not EJ. and that''s classic EJ line.

  • what did he say at 1:42-1:44?

  • The muttered part right before was "I know people are going 'jesus! how fast was that?!'", after that he stuttered "I", as in the pronoun. :)

  • $2,600 coke. what a douche.

  • Any thoughts about his picking pattern on the lick he teaches? I

  • probably just alternative. Do what feels right

  • It's a mix of economy and alternate picking. If you watch his pick hand when he plays it slow, you'll figure it out.

  • sure, I can see what he is doing, but it doesn't make any sence to me - I play it all alternate and it feels fine - I wonder why he employes the economy picking when it doesn't aid minimum movement

  • By definition, It does aid in minimizing movement, which is why it's called ECONOMY picking.

  • on watching it again I can see that it's not even economy picking, it's a number of downstrokes on the same string

  • Not quite. What he's doing is 5 note descending licks that end on a downstroke and then he just rakes with another downstroke to a higher string for the start of the new 5 note group. He doesn't do any economy picking using upstrokes. Consecutive downstrokes on the same string would be too laborious and borders on impossible at those high speeds. This is a classic Eric Johnson run which EJ uses the exact same technique for.

  • For sure, but I play it all alternate and it's all good - I can emphasise notes at will, as he is within this lick.

  • We both know that good technique is all about min movement, and the repetition of down and upstrokes in the way he plays this lick dont aid either the sound or the ease of playing. Now don't get me wrong, Joe is clearly the master here while I am the student, I am just trying to understand why he is doing it, and why he is not alternating. Can you see that alternate picking on this lick would be the obvious choice? I guess I must be missing something are you there Joe?

  • Hey, if you can play it up to Joe's speed using only alternate picking, then all the power to you, but that's not how Joe plays it. If you try it the way I described, it will be easier and make more sense once you get ripping fast with it. Before casting a shadow of doubt on the technique, you should at least try it first.

  • @sportsportsport but does anyone care?

  • He sure knows how to handle any electric guitar, and he seems to have a very delicate sense for sound. Joe Bonamassa is going for the top thats for sure :)

Would be nice to have that riff tabbed out though .. anyone ?

  • Joe is so mellow and humble, and those points of his character adds to his greatness. I have never seen in any of his videos the slightest display of snobbis arrogance that turns people off. He is a really easy going gentle type dude it appears. It still just blows me away to hear him talk, and then to hear him sing. If you never heard of him before and talked with him, you would never guess that he has the blues voice within him like he does. He can sing the blues as well as play it. GREAT

  • thanks Joe for the vid.

  • I'm a big fan of Joe, but I must say this is the first video he tries to give a slow lesson:P Normally he gives a lesson that's just too fast to follow. Great vid man, thanx for the post!

  • great guitar, great sound, great player

  • Joe is the best blues guitarist playing today!

  • @dmbodeen for straight blues for sure! Derek Trucks is great for more jazzy blues, and honestly, John Mayer can play some sick blues too!

  • @dmbodeen Besides Derek Trucks... ;)

  • @dmbodeen no no no....best GUITARIST playing today, you just got to take away the blues part..although he is that too XD
