one of heroes from child hood. inspired me to pick up and racket and start playing. kept me out of busy and more importantly, out of trouble. one of the greats.
@TheBryanky I definately agree. Chang was a freaking speed demon, however, he just wasnt able to cover the court in a way in which he could get back into points like Djoko or Nadal does. I would describe it as scrambling.
@ohverrmynd He has to scramble because the courts and balls were faster then and the racket & strings weren't as improved as this day. Nadal and Djokovic, no doubt are great athletes, Nadal is better in that aspect though Djokovic is a better player now. But give credit to that little man. I dont think today's baseliner's would have been that great in that era of versatile tennis.
@jerilee86 Oh I definately respect him, my only point being that he doesn't have a dominating game- not that its a bad thing. Rather, it made for the most interesting battles in tennis.
How many years we have to wait for another Asian man rank higher then Michael to be number one in the world? In Chinese they always said to another Chinese "I recognized myself as number two, no one will recognized themselves as number one" I believe no one in Asian will have to gut to say it to Michael in tennis.
@ripperduck surprised u said that. Nadal played the same way and get to no.1. What weapons he had? Only legs. I dont think nadal is playing tennis, no? Running and lob the ball, super anti-tennis. Once his legs gone it won't work anymore i gurantee. At least chang counter attack and play flat.
A very underrated match was a huge battle between Chang and Rios at the USO. Two guys as fast as anyone in the history of tennis. Counterpunchers is deceptive, as both had power off the ground, on first serves, and also were very competent at the net. Really an impressive match to watch....so hard fought...for once, Rios competed hard and didn't check out.
The only thing I dont like about chang's game is: He is content of being just a counterpuncher on most of his match. when hes winning great but, there r players & surface that requires him 2 be aggressive but didnt do much of it. That aussie final between him & becker, ive seen that matched, he could have used lotsa lob or attacked da net to put becker on the defense but again didnt. becker is not knowned 4 his quickness on da court. a little disappointed that he used performance drug.
I'll tell you who really was the most underrated players: CARL Chang. Dude was a beast and balled hard.... However, if we're being serious, M Chang was underrated because he was such a lame off the court. Tennis speaks for itself obviously-- and In that regard I don't think he was underrated at all--89 French solidified that.
@jayfey77 The problem is Eurosport. Every time I had made a video with some extracts from Eurosport or France Television the vid is deleted with ''copyright infrigment''.But no problems with other channels.
Great Video! Chang was one of my all time favorites and he was so close to being number one in the world! He played in such a great era with Sampras, Agassi, Becker, Courier, Lendl, Edberg, Wilander, Rafter, Bruguera, Rios, Kuerten, and so many other great champions of the late 80s and 90's.
One of the greatest players ever played on the tennis world. His "never say die" style made him unique on Pro Tour. I always admire his playing style especially his backhand...oh men! no comparison. As one of your million Fans, In our hearts, you're always be our champion.

His only downfall was his lack of power to hit winners. I can only imagine if he had modern equipment, he might've had more than the one major. Kinda like Ferrer, but much, much faster.
I don't know if I'd call Agassi a counter-puncher. He got a lot more aggressive during the later part of his career. Overall, Agassi was the better player but he could not move nearly as well as Chang.
Great video. Thanks so much. It's tough to remember that the "one match" that was going to put him in the #1 position was against Rafter in the '97 Open Semis. Rafter played flawless, and Chang really was outplayed. I love Michael, the only professional player (or the only anyone) I ever got an autograph from. Still have that shirt.
Amazing player!
