The 2007 Megatron looks like a mechanical Christmas tree. The G1 Megatron is from the 80's so you really can't argue that. They should have based it off G1 design but make him more intricate.
Actually, G1 Megatron turned into a Walther P38, not a Desert Eagle. Also he could and often did jump into the air, transform into the gun, and blast people. Although he was a just a P38, he still fired gigantic laser blasts in gun mode that were capable of at least knocking down an Autobot.
