Because this footage is in black and white, I forget to remember how beautiful she must have looked in that red empire dress and those jewels! This is the Tosca of the ages! Thank heaven we have this footage. Genius!
GOOD NEWS dear Callas fans!!!! Striker capitulates! The automated production of feces is over. He's a nervous wreck because the great Filaredo gang has destroyed the white knight on his black donkey. Striker, you are alone in a hopeless plight!Go home and lick your wounds!!! Hoohooohaahaahhhaaa..... what a wonderful world...!!! Striker is only a picture of misery.....LOL
And please could you elaborate your opinion that 'she was the best' ? Perhaps you could come up with some sort of argument. I'm not gonna accept everything at face value, you know.

Please take a moment to reflect on your comment. That might shed some light on who's 'obviously' stupid here. The fact is that I don't like the way she acts - it's definitely exaggerated and looks silly.
This is a place to share opinions and I'm using this opportunity. People must have a hard time with you knowing that every discrepancy between their opinions and yours will immediately make them 'obviously' stupid :)
Exagerated? I study both acting and singing, and you have to act in a certain way so that people will be able to see you! They are not infront of you, you know, they are metres away. It's theater, not a movie. Have you ever been to a stage performance? Do you know what it's like to BE IN a stage performance???
Hey Luker2222, I disagree with you. Do you know what happened in Callas's personal life at the time she sang Tosca? That might explain her "exaggerated and silly acting".
In my opinion Callas was the best Tosca ever because unlike anyone else she nailed the drama and ambiguous character of Floria Tosca.
Sometimes an opinion doesn't need an explanation. La Callas is self-explanatory. She is one of the best to interprete Tosca, as far as I know, in my opinion because of her acting and her exaggerate and passionate way of singing. Her singing is very much like her life. ^^

Sorry to say that but she looks very funny and ugly in this performance. Her voice is good, but the way she looks and her movements are just terrible.
Sorry to say that but you´re obviously a very stupid person! This is called "acting", and she was the best, and it´s a shame that it does exist only a part and not the whole opera with her!
On the opera stage gestures are often larger than in movies. The drama has to reach everyone. This isn't a movie, opera isn't subtle, it's intense and dramatic.
Who was the idiot responsable for the filming of this stage performance?!! Did he just wake up one day and say: "Oh! Instead of the whole opera, let's just record the Second Act! People will like that much better!!".
There is live footage from Callas since 1957, why weren't many of her performances filmed!! It's not like they didn't have the necessary technology...

Callas was FULL OF FLAWS, WOBBLY high Cs, ugly SCREAMING voice, HORRENDOUS technique that cracked most of the time, let's not mention her MONOTONOUS high notes, unlike sutherland's ringing ones. hmmm let's see what else?
she LOST her e-flat in 1955, she produced bizarre sounds in many coloratura passages (example: the Ah! si in saprgi d'amaro that became hooo! si) and they call her la ¿divina?, and a ¿¿¿dramatic coloratura???.

This is very disturbing, her personality was hysterical and nasty really and she had no class, she looks very vulgar on stage, her movements so coarse
My dear mariaperrucha, please stop judging the personality of people you've never met.
The greatest directors disagree re: Callas' acting, the same goes for great actors. Just listen to what Dame Judi Dench said about Callas. And now shut your ignorant, hateful mouth.
From The New York Times, the Washington Post, Opera News, Time The New Yorker and score of other publications, there sounded the same celebatory note about interpretion of Maria Callas in 1965...
*"Miss Callas entered, and all things came to a halt..."
*"Anyone, admirer or not, must admit that she has earned the right to stand at the top of a pyramid, with a total production: scenery, direction, conductor and cast- designed upwards is a consistent structure."
*"If she did not care to sing a note, she would still rank among yhe geuine dramatic interpreters of our time."
The importants papers (The New York, The Washington Post, Opera News and outhers) said:
*"Here we have woman who, like her or not, is the most important person singing in opera today. Her greatness is in her fierce and all-pervasive power to realize every dramatic nuance of a character and to recreate that realization through the overwhelming use of her body and voice."
Importants critics said about Maria Callas as Tosca in 1965:
*"She was an electrifying figure on the stage, youthful, sensitive, beautiful to contemplate- and she lived the role as no other singer within my memory..."
*"Miss Callas is a unique creature- already, in fact, a legend..."

Read this review froma an ancient italian newspaper:
"In the nov 1956 Tosca 2nd act excerpts Telecast Callas is horrible too. Have you ever seen anything as horrible on stage as Maria Callas ? plus she never had voice for Tosca, when she has to do the "parlato" mouri ! she sounds like a 15 years old girl, a soprano leggero singing Tosca, a piece of shit. And how coarse her gestures and movements are ! she seems a butcherwoman.."
And she is screaming & overacting too. Una voce horrible.
Callas was full of flaws, wobbly high Cs, ugly screaming voice, horrendous technique that cracked most of the time, let's not mention her monotonous high notes, unlike sutherland's ringing ones. hmmm let's see what else?

she had to exaggerate her movements in live performances.. so that the audience will see what is really happening on the stage....

@Elisabetta611 : Sadly Callas confuses Floria with Medea.
Floria is a diva, she isn't witch but Callas looks like that. As always her best role is Medea because Medea is a witch (what Callas was)

Maria Callas was born in New York in 1923. She was American until 1967 when she gave up her American citizenship to take the Greek citizenship.

Yes, but born from Greek parents. In any case, she's an international diva.
