Ya know, I keep watching this and the japanese, and other than the fact that the original uses an echo effect when he says "Simon the Digger!", I don't see how one version is superior to the other. The japanese VA had to say the attack name in english, which is always fun to hear, but I seriously don't see how this scene was better "in the original".
Unless you know a decent amount of Japanese (that ISN'T バカ or です [as in de-soo]), I don't think you deserve to rip on an English dub unless it's indisputably horrible.
In fact, if you weren't able to read what was typed in Japanese, chances are you don't know Japanese well enough.
The problem isn't that voice actors don't try. They don't have the type of training and experience that Japanese VAs have. American VAs are used to giving goofy voices for children's cartoons, very rarely do people do voice overs for action scenes. Some anime have great VAs because they're experienced in more than just child-oriented animation, while others think they can get by with a squeaky voice. In the end it really depends on the casting director more than the VA.
@Midsomnyx This is true. I feel like some are a bit more convincing than others, but we already know the ones everyone wants in their dubs. Its either Jonny yong Bosch or Yuri Lowwenthal. and the occasional Justin Cook or Chris Patton. I like dubs just fine, but i think they seriously do just cycle through these guys as the lead role voice if its a shonen. To me, comedy orientation in anime is better in dubs (like air gear, hilarious) but i like action in sub a bit more.

Why am I not surprised to see people complaining about the dub? I've come to expect that. No matter how good the English dub, people will always complain. I rather like this.

You can't say the same for Dragon Ball. This dub doesn't create stupid plotholes, corny one liners and change the music for NO DAMN RAISIN!

Personal preference!? My god.. The emphasis the english actors use compared to the japanese ones are just awful. The japanese really put their emotion into it. I ALMOST didn't like this in english.. almost..

@FrostGibbon Except they are pronouncing it in English. If Simon's name was suppose to be pronounced as Psymen in English they would have translated it that way. Dubbing Companies have good translation these days so they know what they're doing.

@FrostGibbon It's for the same reason that in Eureka7, they pronounce the female lead's name "Eh-oo-reh-kah" instead of Youreeka. Because if they do, then they get shit from pissy little fan boys who bitch about how they butchered the character's name.

Extremely Epic, dub or sub doesn't matter, Epic Moments like this cannot be ruined at all... well, unless 4Kids is doing it... but let's not go there.

Like alot of people, FMA was the first anime I ever saw. So I'll always appreciate Vic's work, especially as good ol' Ed Elric.
@TubbyManGiraffe Yuri Lowenthal is overused as hell. Sasuke in Naruto, Yosuke in Persona 4, Cecil in FFIV, Soma in Gods Eater, Haseo from .hack... The list goes on and on and on. He's possibly the most used VA in animation... But DAMN does he just sound so cool! So cool that I don't even care how often I hear him! I would kill to have his voice. But it's good that I don't, since I wanna get into the Dub Acting buisness myself one day.

Simon's Giga Drill Break is better in Jap, but the rest of the dub is great so I'm not going to be one of those people who are just too anal about dubs.

Out of all the animes that I've seen, this is still, by far, my absolute favorite scene! No matter how many times I watch it, it never gets old, it just gets more awesome!

I still think dub can't be compared to the subbed version. The emotion isn't the same between to two at all! The subbed just has so much force in it that it makes a Giga Drill Breaker just beyond badass. I just don't fell it on the dubbed. Also, the subtitles make it so much more awesome.

Personal preference!? My god.. The emphasis the english actors use compared to the japanese ones are just awful. The japanese really put their emotion into it. I ALMOST didn't like this in english.. almost..

@BassGosple I'm afraid not. The Japanese version is too Over Dramatic for my tastes. I love the English Dub for this shows. Many talented actors like Yuri Lowenthal and Johnny Yong Bosch. @ImmaBritannian I felt that the original is better simply because the show itself is over dramatic, and they need over dramatic voice acting to cater to the show.
also i dont get why they just didnt pronounce simon psymon instead of seemon. I know how they pronounce it in the japanese version, but if they are going to do an english dub you might as well pronounce it in english not japanese.

@FrostGibbon Except they are pronouncing it in English. If Simon's name was suppose to be pronounced as Psymen in English they would have translated it that way. Dubbing Companies have good translation these days so they know what they're doing.

@ImmaBritannian dubbing companies still need alot of work.If its something high budget they usually get the job done, but tons of anime still get shafted with less then spectacular work. "hey guys lets use that C voice actor on tons of anime series yeah i know hes chaeper than the A actor. Whats that fans dont like him? ah no problem theyll get used to it."

@FrostGibbon The reason they kept it the same, is because when pronounced, "Sheemon" is sounds a little like semen. It's a sex joke. Kinda like how you see Boota always between someone's legs.
There are SO many sex jokes in TTGL that sometimes, you overlook the little ones.

@TubbyManGiraffe Really? It's the opposite for me. Usually I hear Yuri and Johnny Yong Bosch more than any other voice actors. I hear Vic occasionally, and when I do, I'm pleased. Like alot of people, FMA was the first anime I ever saw. So I'll always appreciate Vic's work, especially as good ol' Ed Elric.

@TubbyManGiraffe Yuri Lowenthal is overused as hell. Sasuke in Naruto, Yosuke in Persona 4, Cecil in FFIV, Soma in Gods Eater, Haseo from .hack... The list goes on and on and on. He's possibly the most used VA in animation... But DAMN does he just sound so cool! So cool that I don't even care how often I hear him! I would kill to have his voice. But it's good that I don't, since I wanna get into the Dub Acting buisness myself one day.

I still think dub can't be compared to the subbed version. The emotion isn't the same between to two at all! The subbed just has so much force in it that it makes a Giga Drill Breaker just beyond badass. I just don't fell it on the dubbed. Also, the subtitles make it so much more awesome.
