You rite. He should have set up his peak white at 100 IRE (CIEE) instead of 80% gray. People who set it at 80 are those coming from film background. Also, you only set it at 80 when your pedestal is at 7.5 IRE (in analog). But if you should digital (SD or HD), your pedestal (black level) is always at 0 so you want to take advantage of the full dynamic range going from 0 to 100 (even 110 !).
Isn't more proper to set the white to 1 volt (meaning to pure white 100%) and not at 80% gray? Can you explain why you've setup it this way? Is it because of NTSC? (I am in europe using PAL)

Can I download a precise colorbar somewhere and store it on my CF-card
to do the same type of calibration ?
