This movie is like Carlito's Way, didn't do too well at the box office but has since got a huge following due to word of mouth. Underrated gangster film.
@hawkacutioner This movie did not take off as much due to political implications. It was not played in a lot of other nations as intended as it showcased how bad ass US CIA operatives CAN be. The original author of the book wrote the character based on an interview he did with a real CIA operative. In the book, action was located in Italy-Europe, but the CIA operative (retired) claimed this could be anywhere especially in Latin America. The director then brought this version to film in MEXICO.
@Angel3243 You are welcome. I read a lot and I am also a big Denzel fan. It is sad that we lost some of that swagger with "pleasing the world and being a good neighbor type of BS." I grew up in China and served in the PLA. People have no idea how often we were taught that every US operative and soldier is worth their skills in gold. Now as a US citizen, I wish the US can continue to be a prominent global force without the BS. There is no way we can be nice to people who wants to kill masses.
@arodspecialist on reading your post, I believe there is a version of this movie set in Europe (Italy I think). Either way, this movie was/is sorely underrated IMO because not only does it show aspects of life in Mexico that most North Americans do not see (classic architecture and lush landscapes and the various classes of people) it also shows a picture of the life of an Ex-Soldier struggling with inner demons yet trying to make a living with the skills he has. I'm sure many vets can relate
@830JJ My friend, you hit it on the spot just like another Youtuber. Chrissy's as a character, is definitely based on the mental state of most operatives post-service. Most have seen things we only see on films and most have lived those experiences which we dare not even imagine. The books, the author, the movie, and the brave men/women who risk lives to serve and provide some judicial equilibrium in this ruthless world needs to be honored. Sad that the Kardashians get more coverage than this.
@xSwaggaxVersace Thanks for the new update. I have always confirmed it as basing off a CIA officer from the interviews. I guess it is also on Marine Recon too. Makes me proud that we have badass operatives like this.
@MrTomwatson24 , the torture scenes are the only cool thing about the movie. the whole point of him falling in love with dakota fanning was just gay as hell. ill never watch this movie again. lol
