  • people are so shallow, only going on about her hair and how 'ugly' she is. If thats all you care about then you shouldn't be watching it as it means that you dont understand it.

There is more to a good story than how good looking the characters are.

  • To answer some of your questions, Charles will eventually inherit that big house, but Mary is so impatient and selfish she can't wait for her in-laws to die before enjoying the wealth of the estate. As for Elizabeth, as a woman in her thirties she is even more of a "spinster" than Anne, but as her father's favorite her single status is somehow forgiven. It jut goes to show how rotten they all are to Anne for no reason whatsoever!

  • @xoBabyGirl64 I actually think she's very pretty...and if the physical appearance of the lead actress is ruining it for you, maybe you should go watch something more shallow?

  • Such lovely and doting parents, Mary and Charles...

  • Why did they have to choose such an ugly actress? I mean, she doesn't have to be expecially pretty because then you cannot really relate to the matter. But a simply ordinarly pretty, sympathic if you wish, girl would do.This just ruins the movie for me.

  • Oh god, those awful bangs.

  • why is Anne rich and her sister is poor? Im confused

  • @angiehoang206 maybe it had something to do with the allowances the daughters are given. Anne could have saved hers whereas the other sisters didn't.

  • @bvesey13 i seee thank you for clearing it up! Isnt Charles Musgrove rich though?

  • @angiehoang206 i think it was because Anne was living with her wealthy father and Mary was living with her husband, who was not as rich as her father. Back then your class and wealth depended on your husband.

  • wow the sick child as if that's not her son. Some parents are amazing smh

  • This version is growing on me. I love different versions of the same story. Then you get the whole picture.

  • I think i should start calling mirrors "looking glasses"!!!

  • Comment removed

  • haha, she would never have come downstairs un-dressed like that!

  • This is such a beautiful movie!

  • so scantily clad and in front of a gentleman.....shocking! :D

  • Anne and Mary do look like they could be sisters XD

  • ewwww elizabeth looks soo old and ugly! in the novel is she described as prettier than anne! and their dad...wats wrong w/him...he thinks soldiers look old cuz of the war but he looks sooo weird! always mad especially at anne! old pervert trying to flirt w/ a girl thats his daughter's age!anne's family members r sooo selfish!!!

  • The average age or marriage was around 23/24 for women of status and slightly older for men. Women were generally considered way past their sell-by date by the age of 27 because the years available for childbirth were relatively short and often women would only be fertile for 8-10 years of married life.

  • So if 19 is too young and 27 is too old, does that mean about 23, 24 was the right time to get married? And how young could they marry? I mean Kitty in P&P was married at 16!

  • @cassandrapowers Yeah, but didn't Kitty elope with Mr. Wickham? I'm pretty sure that's why she married in the first place, right?

  • @cassandrapowers the common age for marriage was 20 -24; Elizabeth Bennet married at 21 but it was Lydia Bennet who married at 16 to Lieutenant Wickham, not Kitty.

  • Anyone ever looked at the some of the servants clothing?

  • The books all say Anne isn't pretty, but I think she has her own quiet charm. And her sister! urgh!

  • REALLY NICE ,TOUCHI MOIVE

  • I really like mr & mrs croft. You can see that they love and respect each other & they r quite content with their life together. Its really refreshing to see such stable people amidst all the drama.

  • Captain Wentworth must have been : back then hoes didn't want me, now i'm hot hoes all on me

  • There's a reason why I'm not ditching my boyfriend even though his family sucks and doesn't know we're dating right now. It's called love people.

  • Anne n Wentworth hardly speak to each other. But wot amazing chemistry!!! They communicate in a language of their own. Loved Sally Hawkins. She's good here.....as always.

  • @lalala13nhc that would be normal language during those times and considered correct grammer :)

  • lol lots of violent people ^

  • I do not like the hair either but that style was considered fashionable in regency England.

  • Im sorry,I love this story, but is no one else annoyed on her hair?

  • I'm sorry but I absolutely hate her hairstyle!

  • well 27. what an old maid! XDDDD

  • if only they new how old kate middleton is..

  • When a look at that green shortly cut grass at 5:53 I cannot help thinking that a scythe could not make it look so smooth... Definitely a grass-cutter involved :D

  • everybody running fast in persuasion.

  • her sister is a heartless b.....he is your child you damn woman....

  • WHY IS THAT MAN AT 0:57 SO FILTHY?!

  • @11kesimp LOL! Never noticed that before.

  • @11kesimp He's the chimney sweep of the Elliot household along with other duty's, and anyone would be filthy if you worked with soot and ash from chimney's.

  • @11kesimp He must have been the man who cleaned out the chimneys. The people who did that were ALWAYS filthy-looking. Watch the Oliver Twist movie, (Or David Copperfield, I always forget which) and you would see another like him.

  • Does anyone know anything about the tune that plays at 0:20, Please:)

  • Hahahaa, only 7 dislikes. !!! Hahahaah

  • Que buena produccion de la bbc!

  • What a rude old man he is to say such thing about the poor girl and she's not that old!!..wasn't she ill right now and here she goes babbling around, lol!

  • "I am so ill...i can hardly speak." but that's still not gonna stop you from speaking is it?

  • I'm pretty sure the father is the same guy who played 'giles' in buffy the vampire slayer. nice guy.

  • @elenore88 It's true!!!I didn't remember where I saw him!^_^

  • Anne's father is a DISGUSTING, ARROGANT and VAIN man!! I really wish he would go and repeatedly bang his incredibly large head against a brick wall!! Maybe that'll knock some manners into him!!

  • 9:13 "Ready? (craaack)" :O

  • her hair!! her hair!!!

  • annes sister reminds me of a young versiom of ms. bates. the ms bates from the BBC version of emma. she even looks and talks like hers

  • @13vlee and interestingly, the actress who played miss bates also played this role too! doing almost the same portrayal aswell.

  • @13vlee Funny coincidence---I'm reasonably sure that the actress that played Ms. Bates in the version of Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow is the same that played Mary in the BBC version of Persuasion.

  • @nessiesb6 i am pretty sure you are right, but i cant remember her name

  • @nessiesb6 I believe you're thinking of Sophie Thompson (sister of Emma Thompson). She played Miss Bates in Emma with Gwyneth Paltrow and played Mary Musgrove in the 1995 movie version of Persuasion with Amanda Root & Ciaran Hinds. She's a good actress and I enjoyed her in both roles, but I actually like this take on Mary (played by Amanda Hale) just a little better, she's even more obnoxious and is more the way I pictured her from the book :)

  • @Jemeni143 Wait, that was Sophie Thompson? I know she was in the second to last Harry Potter movie, and thought she looked vaguely familiar (but I chalked that up to resembling her sister a bit) but I didn't connect her with those other movies at all--and I'm really good with faces, since I knew the same woman played Miss Bates and Mary (and I also recognized her in Four Weddings and a Funeral too when I first saw the movie). Thanks for clearing that up!

  • @nessiesb6 you're welcome :) Persuasion was actually the first movie I saw Sophie in and since then it's amazing how many roles I notice her in, she's a great character actor, and very funny!

  • I love the music to this, its really quite lovely. =)

  • I don't like Anne's sister. At all!

  • @blue56angel56 yeah....Elizabitch

  • does anybody know wentworth's age?

  • @Didelum I think he's around his mid thirties =)

  • "at her age"? really?? *sigh* silly 1800s and its sensibilities

  • @kateygirl86 It certainly beats today's age of filth, cheats, and moral's that arent worth what comes out of a dog's backside. Were in an age of turning all propriety, decency, beauty and good into filth, greed and cruelty.

So in my opinion Regency England life set would be a blessing compared to the uneasiness and uncertainty of todays England.

  • Hmmm..This version seems a bit..I don't know, off somehow, or a bit dull. I prefer the older version.

  • 6:05

    delicious chocolate cake...

  • boring.

  • hollywoods dramas are childish compared to britishes

  • Ah, to be loved for being smart, virtuous, modest...got to love Jane Austen. She got it right on the nose. What woman doesn't want to be loved for who she really is and not by her looks?

  • @juicyXD

well i would like to loved for mind as well as my looks, bec i wouldnt want the man eyes to wander else where

  • @juicyXD

I fear a man with poor looks and no money has a hard time too. Not only men look at other things than mind and character...

  • @silverbud - Was that chocolate cake? I thought it was fruit cake. Doesnt matter, still lovely with a cup of tea.

  • Is this a parody? just wondering....just something with the acting I don't get. Such a different vibe from the book.

  • @zashie84th

    no its not a parody.

  • my god!!! the sister is such a good actress that i could neot help but hate her ... usually i can avoid hating charaters!!! but this looks real... like most other negative characters of jane austen movies!!!!!

  • Elizabeth is annoying!!!

  • Sally Hawkins (Tipping the Velvet/Fingersmith), Rupert Penry-Jones (MI5) and Anthony Head all in one place of Jane Austeny goodness?

    Hells yeah!

  • I'm liking the 1995 version better. :) I find the Anne in that version more convincing and even prettier in a very simple way. But I would still watch this one. Then maybe I would change my mind.

  • the father is fucking disgusting.

  • Too much emphasis on eating, Elizabeth's always munching.

  • 'the most handsomest man'?

  • LOL @ the mirrors. love love love this interpretation!

  • I would enjoy nothing more than repeatedly beating her father with a cricket bat.

  • @BubbleyBeck

We're all with you on that. Can we take turns?

  • @harrisroyal We can all just beat him at the same time if you like? haha

  • Comment removed

  • @BubbleyBeck that's so funny. Lol! I so agree with you. He deserved a beating.

  • @BubbleyBeck

Any nails in the cricket bat? Seems a bit unsatisfying otherwise? Just a thought. Just putting it out there....

  • @BubbleyBeck i would so love to, but Giles keep popping in my head. I can't kill the watcher or the musical singing repo-man...>.<

  • @muradori Hahaha, i know!! Giles is about the only nice character Anthony has played! ^_^

  • @BubbleyBeck The PM in Little Britain wasn't so bad. "I bit lower minister...." I can never look at him the same way again now I've seen him in a leather man-thong

  • @JGoods10 Oh my God, yes! He's done quite a few... interesting roles hasn't he? :P I heard his daughter plays Carly in the inbetweeners, ha! :)

  • @muradori Yeah! Poor old Giles :P

  • @BubbleyBeck Lol...I was just saying to myself...I don't like her father.

  • @BubbleyBeck

then i take her sister! such an annoying woman!!

  • @kimchifii Yes! Her voice makes my eye twitch.

  • @BubbleyBeck There are many people who'd help you

  • @BubbleyBeck he excels at playing ignorant tyrants :D Have you seen him in Merlin?

  • @MydieLy He does doesn't he! Yeah i love Merlin haha, he's brilliant at that role too! :D Off the top of my head, the only character he's played that i actually like would be Giles in Buffy the vampire slayer! aha :-)

  • What's wrong with 27 year-old women anyway?

  • @inkstersco

    Absolutely nothing, bless them all.

  • @inkstersco back then it was considered old to still be single at 27

  • @watusernameshudiuse It is still odd today in small towns everywhere, it just make sense. It is us, in large cities who have grown to think it is odd to be single at 37...reason?. Career of a person takes off past 35 . . . . Damn you cities!

  • @inksterscoYou would be considered an old maid not to be married by the time you were in your twenties for a lady during this time period. - if your not just trying to be funny with your statement. But, I agree 27 years is NOT OLD. Apparently Captain Wentworth agrees. He looks SOOO FINE -and I don't usually go for the blonde type!

  • Jane Austen is the only person who makes me wanna fall in love....*sigh*

  • @muradori true dat

  • @muradori yeah!!! she knew exactly what kind of men women dream of!!!!!!!!

  • @muradori I know right!, She was and is very inspiring towards young women of all sorts of... Races, classes and ages:)

  • @MysterySongwriter you are so right. its amazing how this is a period film yet, it still strike women of today. i watch it over and over and over probably...my 5th time viewing and it still turns me to mush. and to think i'm one of those single life loving girls.

  • @muradori I second that

  • huh loved that moment at 5:30 when henrietta and louisa just bypass mary like that. lol i do feel a little sorry for her though. But what exactly is her problem?

  • Unappreciated and self doubt combined i would say.

  • @Anaksunamen999 her problem is that Charles, her husband wanted to marry Anne, but she refused him because she was persuaded by Lady russell not to marry like she did with Frederick. So in conclusion, Mary was second best.

  • @Anaksunamen999 also Mary always complains and wants too much attention, that's why Henrietta and Louisa did that. Everyone loves Anne, they appreciate her more and she Is not like her father and her sister elizabeth. hose two are superficial and vain.

  • what is the name of the piece anne plays on the piano?

  • @sarahjo941 moonlight sonata beethoven

  • @sarahjo941

Beethoven sonata no. 14 op. 27 Nr. 2.

Written too late to be among the repertoire of Anne, in fact.

  • I love Anne's treasure box!! ^_^

  • just a quick question to 7:33 : can u say "the most handsomest" i always thought it´s either "most handsome" OR "the handsomest man" (though i prefer the first one^^;).

  • Oh Mary... such a hypochondriac! She's so very, very irritating!

This is my favourite Jane Austen of all time - it's so wonderful!

  • Thanks! I really like the girl who plays Anne Elliot and the guy who plays Frederick IS GORGEOUS. I can't find my DVD, though, so thanks for uploading. Watching this version made me actually read the book. This is one of the few cases (such as The Perfect Storm) where the movie is actually better than the book. Sally is a wonderful actress. She seems the total opposite of Anne Elliott in real life, but she played her with such sweetness and quiet spinsterly desperation. LOL <3 <3

  • I know that this version is not as close to the book as the 1995 one, but I can't help but like this one much more. Maybe it has to do with the actor that plays Frederick, who really reminds me of someone from my past. Sad that I still keep his trinkets and letters too!

  • This movie is excellent. My favorite Jane Austen book,

  • is it weird that i find Anthony Head attractive even though his like 40 years older then me?

  • @3194shi I just had to to tell you that i feel the same way about Alan Rickman he is 40years my senior and the hillarious thing is that for the past decade i thought he is 40 my friend pointed out to me that he is way older !!!!!!!! go figure

  • does anybody know of the piece that plays at 5:42 ? :)

  • Love the part where they [Louisa & Henrietta] just pass Mary when they came in ;]

  • annes hair is so ... greasy :(

  • @ItIsMeMaybe i know! i don't know if it's necessarily greasy... it looks like they gelled the crap out of it. And then curled her bangs. idk i think without the gel it would just look more natural

  • I can never understand why Anne's family were so dominating over her. They seem so selfish, I'm glad that she found solitude in being alone, even if she were in company. I really love this version of Persuasion, Rupert Penry-Jones and Sally Hawkins played their part extremely well. In the end Anne finally gets what she's always wanted and I think it is acceptance, with a little love thrown in for good measure.

  • Annes sister Mary is so selfish, all she care about is herself. Mary is so attention seeking its awful

  • Mary is played so well. Since seeing this version, I always imagine her this way when I read the book.

  • this isn't my favorite book by Jane Austen (it was a little slow) but this movie is pretty good so far!

  • The anne in this version is much more pretty and stronger than the previous anne..the previous anne was too pale and ghostly..

  • @Hope4bella yup the prev one was like a dead fishanywyas they cud'have chosen a better anne in this one...maybe after watchingP&P and north an d south i have extremely high expectations...

  • @Hope4bella exactly. in the beginning she was supposed to look like that, but

later on she should have changed to a real beauty...but she didn´t...

  • @Lilithly beg to disagree.

  • @hngka3jlut with what?

  • @Lilithly maybe I misunderstood you. I disagreed with the comment that anne (Sally Hawkins) beauty didn`t change throughout the movie.

But if you meant the 96 or 97 version of anne, I agree. Don`t like that version, maybe because I saw the 2006 version first. sorry for bothering you.

  • @hngka3jlut that´s ok:)

  • Ann's father and sister treat her like a servant.

  • ahe even, (or rahter her cloths) loos like she were servant.

  • back when women had experation dates of...24! Nasty..

  • They still do in the real world. Single mother's with 2.4 children can hardly inspire confidence in decent men, and your succesful business woman of today in her 30s or 40s run around like blue arse fly's to be impregnated artificially minus the man before their time runs out.

    Now thats Nasty.

    Give me 1818 anyday.

  • It depends on the man. If a woman has children it doesn't make her any less desirable to a man, it depends on the man. I love the fact that women actually have ROLES in society apart from property and dowrys. Reading about 1818 and watching movies about the time is a lot different then actually living in this time.

  • I'm afraid it does, yes she can still take some sap in that will take her and her tribe on, but any decent man wouldnt touch it but would want their own kids of his own, and rightfully so.

You dont say about living in the time of 1818.

  • How delightful!! Places mentioned here are those found in letters by my Gtx4 Grma (1820s to 1850s), just a few years after the setting of Persuasion: Taunton, Lyme, Coleridge, Exeter/Devon, Bath. She was the recipient of a legacy from an uncle who died without issue, 1810. It took until 1865 to settle! (Lanphier vs Buck by Kindersley). Her solicitor's referred to her as the "Widow of St. Decumen" (widow of a Rev. with doctorate in divinity.. and oh my he was soooo handsome!!) J'adore!

  • how fascinating...and how lucky you are to have such information about your ancestress...

  • quite an opposite character from happy go lucky

  • 5:29 so funny they just ignored her & ran to anne. 6:11 she's really desperate for attention. Dr. Anne is so smart & calm popping the kid shoulder back. wow, mary & charles deserve she other. so preoccupied with dinner than staying w/ the boy. idiots.

  • Her sister is ugly and desperately wants her fathers approval (how pathetic) and her father is so temperamental and positively disgusting!! I feel sorry for Anne I've seen people who grow up meek and humble like her because they're family is so dominating over them...thank goodness for Lady Russell she seems like Anne's only escape from her family.

  • I have totally settled on this book of Ms Austen being my favorite, as well as this version of the movie, brilliant acting as well as how the movie is filmed

Thanks for the showing of this !

  • @sheriwhispers My favorite book is probably Pride & Prejudice (I love the comedy of the parents), with persuasion as a close second, but I've always liked Anne Elliot better than any other Austen heroine, including Elizabeth Bennet. There's something about Anne's strong feelings combined with her serene behavior that makes her so endearing!

  • Austen certainly did like using hypochondria to comedic effect; Mr. Woodhouse, Diana and Arthur, Mrs. Musgrove! Except with Anne's sister I just want to push her in a lake so she'll catch a real cold...

  • Ha! In the book Mrs. Croft is 38.

  • Hate her family, a bunch of snobs.

  • @owenbutler5 Her father is so vain and her sister also. Poor Anne.

  • I suggest watching the movies before reading the books because the language style is so different it is really hard to read. Start with pride and prejudice, that is the most well known and loved kne of Austen's books. If you're going to watch the movie see the 1996 ( or is it 95? I can't remember) version first. That's the best

  • 95 i think

  • @lonesomelittlegirl It's the 1995 version.

  • @lonesomelittlegirl: that's odd I find it is much better to read the novels first and watch the movies later because you appreciate them more and if you do it the other way it is harder than to get through the novels because you already know what happens.

  • @lonesomelittlegirl i don´t think the language style is difficult in persuasion... in fact it´s my favourite austen after pride and prejudice. the most difficult to read (for me) was sense and sensibility...persuasion was great! i had to fight my way through S & S, even though i really like the story:D

  • @lonesomelittlegirl i would suggest the 1980 version of pride and prejudice. it is exactly like the book.

  • Slovenish??? Oh gosh girl, there no such language as Slovenish. It's Slovene or Slovenian.

  • @Claudine986 common, she is not a native speaker. why do you expect from us that we speak perfect english? do you speak a language perfectly? i`d be curious. if that is not the case, please do not critize the english of foreigners.
