I launched this past Sunday! My GoPro froze 53 minutes in, common issue I am finding out. Video is on my page of launch, check it and/or my website at aerialparade
Wow, this video is simply spectacular. Did you have the camera take a picture every so seconds? Cause I heard the noise of a camera shutter whilst the balloon was flying.
@geonerd but if I took it out what would people complain about? :) The noise isn't random which is why I haven't removed it. The siren is the third redundant tracking system, the idea being that if it landed in someones backyard they would have an incentive to go find what was making that noise and hopefully my cell which was posted on the balloon and return the payload.
Nice job! go to our profile to see STRATOS I being launched in South Florida! As you know Florida is surrounded by ocean water. It was truly a challenge. You can go to my profile or type STRATOS BALLOON on You Tube.
What specific equipment did you guys use and where can i get it? I'm also thinking about constructing a high altitude balloon. (are there any pictures of just the payload/ inside of it?)
@AHW214 it would be nearly impossible for 75 dollars unless you have access to free helium. The helium alone cost nearly 50 dollars. The balloon will cost around 40 dollars (i believe? I forget now) and the parachute costs at least 30 dollars as well.
I'm accually planning to bulid a high altitude balloon rig this winter, and I'd like to launch it in the early spring to see western new york with snow.
Did you place a hand warmer against the back of the Zi6 to keep the batteries from freezing?

Amazing! I wish to climb that high one day... and see the darkblue and black sky with stars and sun at the same noon time!

Wow, the air is to thin to propagate sound, you must have been at least 25km high.

Schön gemacht..sowas macht hier in Deutschland kaum einer.. wohl auch weil so ein Ballon am Ende in einer Siedlung landen würde, oder Highway.. :-)

at 2:30 an angel grabbed it and made it turn the other way :)

How did you measure the altitude? Most GPS units will shut down at ~60 000 ft. as a precaution so the gps can't be used in a missile. Great job!

WOW! so how did you retrieve the balloon afterward? a really REALLY long rope?

@theMakeStuffClub Ah, that makes sense. Maybe add a timer to the siren next time, and work on the camera stability. :) Thanks for posting.

Is there a way to do this with a budget of 75 dollars?
And what supplies would you need other than a camera and weather balloon?

It was not very expensive. I have a budget list that I will pm you. The whole project was close to 600 dollars, but could have been cheaper.

What was the distance (over land) that it traveled?
Resdon111 2 years ago
it traveled from kalamazoo mi to marshall mi
about 40 miles. Most of the distance comes from the high altitude winds and the parachute.
