Sonny on harp, Brownie on guitar and vocals, and the great Willie Dixon on bass. Man! I was born in the wrong time. I can only imagine how it must have been to see these greats, these legends in person.
Sonny Terry is playing a Bb harp. But you have to play it in cross-harp style since the song actually is in F. There are quite a few videos on youtube explaning it. Hope I could help.
I don't think they had your desire to learn the song in mind when they filmed this. If you really wanted to play it, you wouldn't need to see his hands. Give thanks.
A good song spoilt by crap camera work If I go to see a muscian play and sing, thats what I want, not just his face, this is typical of camera work, they cant get off the face
Look man...If you know anything about BLUES, you'll be a thousand times more thankful for being able to see his face close up and NOTHING BUT. That should teach you a helluva lot more than if you saw his hands. Plus: you've got ears, right...?
@bluesoulady sorry for you me and my brother travelled with them in Europe and other Great Bluesmen and women who are in Blues Heaven now jamming ariund
@bobobekker yes sireee theres a lot of music going on up there and I count it a privilege to have seen them on youtube and hear them on cd etc and know that there are many others too who are following in the blues trail! and so, it shows that the blues is the roots and the rest is the fruits! wonderful stuff!
A great blessing on my life was getting to hang out with Brownie and Sonny in the late fifties when I was barely a teenager at the Idyllwild Arts Foundation in the San Jacinto mountains where they would show up every summer for a "folk-music" workshop along with people like Pete Seeger and The New Lost City Ramblers. I was learning to play guitar and got to go to Brownie's classes where he taught us simple blues runs in E. Haven't heard them in years, and here they are, all over this place!
Got a little story to tell you about those two. In 1960 I worked for a record label that had its own studio. One day I had to go back into the sound booth and deliver a phone message. In the corner were these two men singing "Red Rooster." I didn't even know who they were. Somebody had to tell me. I was 21. ---O'Ross
great song.I´d also love to see them play "sittin´on top of the world", but couldn´t find it anywhere. If anybody could figure out the chords of those two songs I´d be so grateful.
I hear tell his favorite key was Bb. I purchased a Bb in a Lee Oskar a while back and then read that Sonny Terry had switched from playing Marine Band to a Lee Oskar before he died in 1986. The LO harps are not good for overblowing without modification but their airtight design makes for easy interesting draw bends and their sound projects much louder than the classic Hohner Marine Band. The Lee Oskars also have 2nd Position Key (Cross Harp) printed on the high register end of the harp.
