  • That's right, motherfuckers.

  • bet you cannot watch that cadenza without cum.

  • Seriously, this is the kind of playing that probably would have had Liszt going mad with joy. Like I have said before, 100-200 years from now, people will be thinking back of Hamelin like we think of Liszt today.

  • Que belleza!! Dios mío esas manos se mueven como arañitas de la humedad, maravilloso realmente quien puede interpretar una de las obras más notables en la historia de la música. Muchas gracias!

  • I did this cadenza for my Ltcl recital :)

  • I want to see him play Circus Galop

  • Dazzling...

  • Is he the composer of Circus Galop?

    Everything is clear now...

  • La mejor interpretacion que he escuchado sobre la rapsodia hungara en toda mi vida. BRAVO!!

  • Press 2 really fast for the mighty fingersniff

  • The best!!

  • CRAZY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • WHAT A PIANIST .......... !

  • I like the beginning part. Buravo!

  • ...I was understandably interested whether Mr.Hamelin was going to play this like a human being or like a HAMELIN, which is a kind of piano-playing machine, and, yes, he plays it like a machine, but a damn good one...cf. the Lennon lyric: "it's a clean machine"...much better to be a good machine than a clean one, esp. given what Lennon really had in mind here...

  • This is madness.

  • Interpretazione un pochino troppo fredda ed inespressiva.

  • His hands are like two spiders in agony,,,,nice interpretation

  • Your opinion doesn't count if you can't speak English and are attempting to carry out an argument in it.

  • Ball of sweat at 6:02

  • The antithesis of Lang Lang! Excellent!

  • What a fucking crazy cadenza. I wonder if that was entirely ad lib, either way holy shit. Hamelin is amazing.

  • @Udders666 I think it was practiced o: There was sheet music made for it and it has annotations that Hamelin would right...

    Ever seen a 7 note chord? =_=

  • @Udders666 It's original according to the description, I'm not sure if that's accurate though...

  • the music hamelin often specializes in needs the 'wow' factor in the performer to bring it off. no one wants to think about 'deep performances' with this kind of music, and no one denies hamelin's technique. it is not that he is 'cold. the problem is that he has little temperament.

  • By far my favourite interpretation of this piece, simply amazing!

  • el video no es HD, el pianista es el de calidad!

  • dat circus galop

  • I hope I can play this someday.

  • @fissionesque Hey, it's a hard piece, but it's not impossible ; it only takes dedication and hard work and you can have a fairly good grasp of the piece in a month or two. Of course, mastery of the piece takes a lot longer than that, but give it a try: it's great fun!

  • Hamelin is like a living textbook on proper piano technique. It really is amazing.

  • 11:03, I'm sure glad I'm wearing my brown pants right now...

  • Way better than jung lin!

  • @95superbad You the joker my man! Jung Lin and Hamelin take totally different approaches to how they interpret the HR2. Both are great pianists. I love Jung Lin's HR2, I hate Hamelin's HR2, LOL

  • @95superbad yep better than jung. hamelin in his prime (here) was second to none.

  • He's better than Volodos.

  • Liszt or Alkan or Chopsticks, it makes no difference to this master!

  • I am at a total loss as to why some people don’t agree with those who adversely critique this channel. Within 4 minutes I found the following: Wrinkles in coat, Piano too long, Floor ugly color, Wedding ring to dull, Nose too small, Coat sleeves too tight, Overly simplistic glass frames Thinning hair, Plain stage, Needless to say, I will look elsewhere for good music.
  • @scienceandmusiclover you where correct when you said you were at a total loss, but it wasnt about people agreeing with your WIDELY opinnionated Critique. The great thing about Music is that it is NEVER played the same twice! When it comes to interpretation you should be able to connect to the story the performer is telling through his music, not through what he or she is wearing or what they use. if youre going to look elsewhere for good music start by learning what exactly that is!

  • @mrman7324

My WIDELY opinnionated Critique is based on the fact that WIDELY opinnionated Critiques here are nothing more than exercising pedantic posturing. The Alpha wolves come here to let us see their highy refined, superior intellect, and "talented" taste for music.

I like, every other human on this earth, know how to hear what pleases me. We don't need an instruction manual from an "expert." I have played the piano for decades and am not 10% as good as Hamelin, but enjoy his music.

  • @scienceandmusiclover Well said! Though I am not a Hamelin fan, I agree with you 1000% :-))

  • Nunca ví a alguien tocar e improvisar así, este tipo no es de este mundo. Increíble, inigualable

  • This seems to exceed what's humanly possible. If I hadn't seen it with my own eyes... several times... it would be hard to believe this was one man, one take, and not sped up!

  • @8Ho03EdONl1liL The great thing about Hamelin is not the speed in which he performs, but the tremendous depth and expressiveness of his interpretations. Speed is not more important than any other shaping element. It is the entirety which makes him that amazing.

  • OMFG!!! this is EPIC!!! Best thing I've ever seen on youtube. Just imagine how would this look if were recorded in Full HD, it would make your house explode!!!!!!

  • I bet he figured out the cadenza in his car on the way to the concert.

  • @djalexb99

    He composed it ;)

  • I loved his cadenza.

  • They turned the camera away in the end so we wouldn't see the piano combusting.

  • @Diffomega

    Correction,

    It was Exploding!!

  • can you imagine what it would be like to have a masterclass with hamelin? they should offer musicians 'hamelin masterclasses' as an alternative to studying music at college...

  • I like this version and his this performanece.

  • Absolutely unbelievable!

  • Love his style, great interpretation

  • It takes an great amount of mental and physical energy to play this song. He's sweating at 6:07

  • holy shit.

  • I saw Hamelin yesterday in Schwetzingen, Germany. He played Schumann, Liszt, Haydn and Wolpe. Was a great concert! He also gave autographs afterwards in contrast to many other pianists.

  • Quem veio aqui por causa do Pica-Pau da um joinha.

Who came here because of the Woody Woodpecker, then positive.

    (Y)

  • Very nice

  • Excuse me? Are those black key glissandos? I didn't realise those were really possible.

  • @strawberryzits

    No, it's actually f-sharp major scale :D

  • Epic ending :D

  • 61 pessoas não gostaram. Agora eu me pergunto, como alguém pode não gostar de uma apresentação como esta.

    Esse cara é fanatástico.

  • I cried in the first 4 minutes

  • I cried

  • im in 8th grade. starting this piece. don't know how many YEARS it might take lol. hoping to audition into Juilliard with this piece as one of my audition pieces..

    pray for me HAHA

  • In the minute 8:19 he turns mad ...

  • Tom & Jerry!!!! jajaja

    Espectacular.

  • One Word = Beautiful

  • He Was Playing So Amazing that at 6:07 Sweat Dripped from his nose :D

  • Justin Bieber hired 60 people to dislike this because he/she was jealous.

  • Justin Bieber hired 60 people to dislike this because he was jealous.

  • 10q so much for the video !

  • Unbelievable! I hope to see him live someday.

  • Un des plus grands pianistes vivants...un technicien incomparable...

  • Fucking Awesome.....

totally his life is in his own hands...

  • this guy is a fuckig beast

  • Carajo que cancio ehh.. Poca Madrrrr....

    Me gusta

  • Of all versions of this music Ive already heard, thats the most unbelivable. He plays beyond human capacity, thats just.... Well... No words. Maybe Beyond for itself expresses better.

  • In despite being unable to me absorb all of this opus magnum , all can I say is impossible do not hear it and not to be mesmerized and wandering through other tides.

  • Comment removed

  • 2:09 Figaro, Fi-ga-ro!!

  • He should just put a brick on the pedal, he's not taking his foot of it anyway; regardless of what he is performing.

  • @placydil

Lol wut? Why does such an idiotic comment get thumbs up??

  • @twooffour Thumbs up baby.

  • @placydil

Do an ear tomography or something.

  • Absolutely astounding technique, and a wonderful interpretation at the end. How anyone thinks this to be anything other than genius is bizarre.

  • Yeahhhhh...................

  • Well, if one can't do something themselves... where do you think critics come from.? I just wish that I could play any instrument well. Like him or not, this is one talented pianist.

  • I dont want to know how did he play, i just want to listen, and the sound looks good enough to me.

  • There's a bit in the middle that reminds me of Roger Rabbit :D

  • Why is it we expect each singer to sing the same song differently, putting their own twist on that song but when it comes to playing piano, so many people are hung up on doing it technically correct without variation from what the composer put down on paper? When I hear somone recite one of my poems, I am always eager to hear them put some of their own soul into it and not just read off the paper. I would think that a composer should feel the same way.

  • @shatros Because your poems is nothing compared to this kind of music,(Nothing personal, but i've never hear about anything that belongs to you). When one thing is perfect, have to be the same forever. Because of this, that is immortal. And you should not compare things... Music is very different from poem.

  • @SlayeCohen I am going to ignore your first comment. You are so wrong. I have known many muscicians and composers and I would say they all would disagree with you. There is NO such thing as forever when it comes to any art form. and there is no such thing as perfection. Perfection is a direction to go not a state of being. Of course music is different from poetry but they share certain things. They are both the end result of a creative process and they are both subject to interpretation.

  • @shatros "Perfect" it's just a word, because you do poetry, you search a lot of meanings in words, i am musician, and i understand what you feel and said, but when i say "perfect" and forever, have a different meaning, that you can think, because we are different. It's like to say that Jesus is not imortal (I dont want to get inside in beliefs). What i want to say is just: music, poetry, any kind of art that have a high meaning for people, will live "forever". And sorry if i upset you.

  • @shatros And my comment was only because i don't like to seeing people that doesn't know, and doesn't feel how difficult is fully dedicate yourselves for a music life. (how hard it is to surrender fully to the music) I am Braziliam, and i don't fully understand how to formulate sentences, but i know you will understand.

  • @shatros Then please tell us, when is a piece of music gone?

  • @KonkreteXXX When does a star stop shining?

  • @shatros Exactly what I´m talking about.

  • Well... despite his obvious talent and facile fingering I thought it was a little "stiff"... until the last 3 minutes or so where he played like Liberace on LSD. Which isn't to say I didn't like it...his interpretation is just so different! I need to watch it 30 more times, just my first impression! Still, thumbs up!

  • @monkeygraborange Most pianists insert a little something towards the end but usually it is not more than 5-10 seconds long and sometimes seems to be a space filler more than anything. But Hamelin creates his own little variation on a theme which I think is quite inovative though I agree with the Liberace in LSD remark. Some of it is a bit dark and twisted but very vibrant. He obediently plays this properly as expected right up to the point where he is set free then explodes.

  • The brilliance behind Hamelin is in his interpretation. You always get something unique and often controversial amongst the purists. That is why he is so successful. That is why so many who think Liszt should be played a certain way don't care for his interpretation. He is not afraid to break the rules, and this simply makes him much more versatile and, in my opinion, genius!

  • Marc and I made love two weeks ago.

  • Guys, stop saying this is a bad interpretation of the piece. #1, if you can play better than him, than I'll agree with you, but words are no match for actions, #2, Hamelin plays this song his own way, and I like it, because it is different than how other people interpret this song, #3, Why do you guys judge Hamelin because he doesn't have enough "emotion" what if some people don't like moving around while playing piano and like being still... think about it, not every one likes the same thing

  • qe le cae de la nariz en el minuto 6:06

  • @Lulii1230012 Sudor

  • es como la escena de Tom y Jerry

  • @dlipatti Sorry , but this is only a perfect technique .

  • How can you all be so arrogant to claim that his interpretation is wrong when he has spent years working with and studying this piece and a lifetime dedicated to the piano?

Most of you are just comparing this piece alongside other performances you heard, and I doubt any of you would be able to produce a coherent, "better", interpretation if you only had the urtext to look at. Not liking it is one thing, but calling the interpretation "artificial" or "emotionless" is ridiculous.

  • @swordfish712

    Argument from authority;

    "do better or don't criticize"

    What a worthless comment.

  • @swordfish712 good to know that such ppl like you exist on the globe. :)

  • HE'S PLAYING THE HARDER VERSION IN C SHARP MINOR...

  • I still like Horowitz's the best.

  • this version makes my balls twitch like a bus full of spastics on their way to the sea side

  • Me gusta mas la interpretacion Tom! y Jerry claro!

  • @Mu7illo jajajaja estuvo buena esa, escuche esta versión y tenia su imagen en mi mente.

  • @Mu7illo siiiiiii mil veces ello xD...

  • I agree, the first part is totally without feeling and emotion. listen to Gergely Boganyi's version. That you will like I'm sure :)

  • This is WAY too fast!!!! Don't get me wrong, it's perfect technically, but no emotion there. I mean, this isn't a freakin race! I love this piece and couldn't even listen to the whole thing. Very sad.

  • @dagrisa Sad for you. He makes a good living from those who do not consider it sad, and who also love music with their heart, not with a pedantic need to post a "superior" opnion.

  • @dagrisa

You are obviously not very musical then - very sad

  • Tom And Jerry! <3

  • @jackofhearts161 dear mr. mikecaffey, or should i say mr kastle.

that is certainly the most pathetic way of trying to spread the word of your shitty piece ole ole, ESPECIALLY after seeing what hamelin is doing in this video with his cadenza.

you are a washed up pianist, you will never achieve half of what virtuosos like hamelin, cziffra, etc etc have.

your insistence on this is quite sad to be honest.

    you are a nobody.

  • LA ESTRUCTURA MUSICAL INFLUYO EN EL HEAVY METAL!!

  • Mannered, artificial playing? Oh please! This is the performance that tops all others, in my opinion.

Yes, he has confidence, but heck, if you have it, show it!

  • This is simply the best version.

  • @michaelnyman1 Fucking right it is!

  • This man is amazing. My mom knows a few of his professors from Temple, and whenever he played juries, he'd start the pieces out the way they were written, and then he'd go improvisation crazy. He was (and is) just incredible. Very few people can play Liszt well, and Hamelin plays him to perfection.

  • pathetic cadenza is to long and boring. should be the height of excitement fails miserabley

  • Ole Ole from Kastle's Ninth Concerto has the hardest technique written for the piano.

  • @chrism216 Who are you to try and predict someone's fate?

Anyways, this was an excellent rendition of Liszt's piece. But after analyzing Hamelin's pieces such as Circus Galop and Alkan Etude No. 4 (or something along those lines), it's safe to conclude that he's insane. :)

  • @TheExarion

i dont think you understood what my comment was about so i wont bother to explain it to you

  • @chrism216 You're an ignorant troll and I'll leave it at that.

  • I would pawn my largest testicle to be able to play like that

  • @geezonthekeys

    you inspire me

  • @geezonthekeys why not both

  • very nice

  • very nice man

  • if the video quality was as good as the audio quality... technology wouldn't be able to support the video. heh heh

  • Jazzy 8:56

  • Damn he's good.. ;-)

I would never be able to play that right.. it's going to fast and it would take me forever to learn these notes or chords in the right order. xD

  • The ending just proves circus gallop is PLAYABLE... I'd thought it'd be impossible even if one multi tracks.

  • Lol at 6:08 you can see sweat falling from his face

  • Listen people, this is a wonderful picece from Liszt,my favourite one,but the most genius part is the end- 11:13 it is like classical music rofl!!!! LOVE HUNGARIAN RAPSODY!...btw,i didnt hear the ending in other interpretations,Hamelin is only one who plays it,isnt he?...

  • @Axotrotl It's called a cadenza, a passage for the pianist to showcase his virtuosity. Liszt peppered his compositions with these cadenzas, with instructions to the pianist to compose his/her own cadenza. So yeah, this is Hamelin's version. A damn good one too.

  • This has taken on a turn to an intellectual and philosophical discussion, that's great :-) It's not only "madman" and the "worst of the worst" that scienceandmusiclover references, it's the lambasting of any commenter who dares to say he likes MAH and ALSO likes another performer. Such opinions are blocked from Maksim's and Hamelin's clips LOL The "worst of the worst" are those who post sick racist and obscene comments against Asian pianists, Jung Lin and Lang Lang, and those should be verboten

  • How a dipatti and friends think they can comment on such a performance is beyond me. Please stop commenting on things you don't understand, to paraphrase Brahms. I know, any troll can drop by and say anything here but stupidity and ignorance shown by some can be something of an irritant.

  • Most of those who comment on this channel behave like childish 16 year olds. It is so obvious the sound of music has little to do with it. It is a

“Look at me. I am refined, sophisticated, well read, and extremely intelligent. Don’t you dare doubt me or disagree. I am the dominant alpha male/female. Bow to me or I will reveal you are a stupid troll.”

A healthy open mind would accept a broad range of music; not a single minded “taste” for music that bores friends and neighbors.

  • Made by Japan

  • There's nothing more horrendous in the world than YouTube comments on videos of popular classical pieces.

  • @mahler151 Truer words were never spoken. I have learned that all open forums attract strange people, but classical music channels do attract those who are truly trolls. I believe there is a reason. Many who post on these channels are driven by a need for attention more than listening. They have an irresistible compulsion to demonstrate their elite, superior view and argue. It is actually ego and a superiority complex that motivates their "supposed" appreciation of classical music.

  • @scienceandmusiclover "Many who post on these channels are driven by a need for attention more than listening. They have an irresistible compulsion to demonstrate their elite, superior view and argue." Oh, I know the type alright. Real pompous arseholes who, say, try to dominate one or two videos for years by lambasting everyone and anyone who has the temerity to hold a different view or who spots a basic mistake in, e.g., the point made by a hero of theirs.

  • @2stw Jung Lin is magnificant!

  • Comment removed

  • @2stw Found you CLOWN :-) google search is amazing.

You are another Hamelin fan who has gone off the deep end, what total bullshit you have provided in your oh so wise comments.

When are these clowns going to stop throwing temper tantrums like little brats?

  • Martha Argerich has better technical ability. Just listen to how fast her octaves are and how fast she can play.

  • @bobbphysics Right! Argerich has the technique to play great Rachmaninoff, her Rach 3 is amazing, so is Jung Lin's. Come tp think of it, that explains why Hamelin does not do Rach xD

  • This crazed "leadersheep" has put up about 20 comments, all spam and all bigoted. This guy says he "prefers non-asian pianists"....again i say to you "sheep" way to go numnuts!!

No disrespect to MAH here...he is great but his "style" is not a favorite of mine. I prefer Jung Lin's interpretation...

  • Imo...genius...without doubt.

  • ¡¡¡BRAVOOOOOOO!!! ¡¡¡BRAVIIIIISIMO!!! Que manera de tocar, que forma de sentir la musica, gracias, gracias por este video y saludos desde hermosillo, sonora, mexico.
