do you think i can just buy the copper and the indoor out door conetion thingy and just fasten it to wood and it will work or are the precise mesurements requierd?
Nice, why don't you start your own business. I and I feel many others would be willing to pay $80 to $100 to have you custom build and install one of these. Would it work with the box on an analog TV. Thanks, James
I'm curious as to the importance of the specific dimensions...will a larger antenna add more angles/waves or would you jsut increase dimesions on everything respectively?
@Dano853 There is such thing as a dual grey-hoverman antenna if I remember correctly. I think you just build two of them and connect them via some copper. Not too sure about that, but I vaguely remember reading that. Let me know how it goes if you're able to make something bigger, and thanks for watching! Would love to have you as a subscriber if you haven't subbed yet!
doesn't work well for my computer tv tuner but not bad directly in to the TV. But I need the computer to record. I wonder if I need a different kind of coax cable for digital (no analog channels anymore in Canada)... I've heard one cable is better for digital. ?
@dangervich Good to know that it doesn't work well on a computer tv tuner. I wonder why that is. Yes there is a cable that is better, and it usually makes a big difference. I can't remember which one though. I think it might say "digital" on the cable somewhere. Glad you liked the video! @LaneVid I found out it's called RG6 coaxial cable. The cheaper one (RG595 or something like that) only has a coating of copper whereas RB6 is pure copper. It's particularly good for long leads and essential when it comes to gained signals (amplified).
@LaneVid I bought RG6 cable and, amazingly, it works almost flawlessly. I also figured out why the tv tuner isn't as effective as my TV's native tuner. The computer's tuner is a dual one. That means the signal is split and therefore there's a loss of signal. But things are definitely improving. I may try a baffle behind the unit to pull in as much signal as I can but for now I'm happy. Thanks again.
@AngelDavidMS I know! I discovered the same thing! Glad you liked it! Check out some of my other videos, and if you like them, I'd love it if you subscribed!

i followed these instructions to a T, and upon hooking this up to my LCD tv I get nothing but static. The balum pads are both touching the copper wire and I have the antenna upstairs near a window and I get not even the slightest trace of a picture. I live in a moderately sized city so nearby signals is not a problem. Any suggestions on what the problem might be?
@MetalK1LLs hmm... I'm not to sure why it's not working. You might wanna try using the antennaweb [dot] org site to see which stations you should be picking up.
Hi, you have a good information and will try making my own HDTV Antenna, one question for you, I live in St.John's, Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada, which is way up north east. What is the best way to know if this antenna is going to work, I live very close to a local digital TV station, is there a website that I can put my latitude and longitude to check, please advise. In your video clip you were in your attic, but do I need to put my antenna on the roof of my house or in my back yard.
@pichoni There is a website called antennaweb . com (I think), but it has a listing of all of the stations in your area and how well you should be able to pick them up! I just put mine in my roof because that is the highest place that I have in my house without going on the roof. Let me know how your's turns out!
@pichoni Go to TVfool.com under where is says "Check your address for free tv" Click "click here" enter your address, postal code and province and it will show you good diagram of where your TV antennas are,if you already knew this please disregard this message,Take Care!
@kevinvc2 DId it work the second time? Glad you liked the video! Check out some of my other videos, and if you like them, I'd love it if you subscribed!
@sudhumna The channels he mentions are broadcast in North America, so I don't think you'd be able to pick up those channels from Nepal, it's simply too far away. You might be able to pick up any channels over the air that broadcast from Nepal. There are some stations that broadcast, I think if you used an antenna you could pick them up. But you wouldn't be able to receive anything from North America. I know you can watch Nepal television. Sorry to bring bad news. But you might like the programs.
Interesting. The digital transition date for Canada is September 1st and I'm looking at my options to get some of the weaker channels. Been looking at a few makeshift antenna plans online to get the ones my Terk doesn't, and possibly some from nearby New York.
I'm in Ottawa BTW, and we spoke briefly in epoddle's chat today. :)
I'd like to revise my previous post. So far I've made 4 antennas and this one is the best design. When I do a channel search I've been able to get 48 stations (that includes substations) which is more than my shoebox antenna, coat hanger antenna and DB4. The stations are up to 50 miles away from Cincinnati including Dayton and Lexington KY. Thanks for the awesome video!
Well, I made the antenna and it works fine, but I am disappointed. I made a Shoebox Antenna last week (see videos elsewhere on YouTube) and it actually outperforms this "Best HDTV Antenna". And the Shoebox antenna is a lot smaller and simpler to make. Has anyone else had a similar experience? So far, the Shoebox antenna has outperformed both my rabbit ears from Radio Shack as well as this antenna. I live in Cincinnati and I want a better antenna so I can get Dayton stations too. Help!
Thanks for the vid. I like how you talked through everything instead of blaring music through the video. it was allot more helpful than other videos I've seen.
@LaneVid I ended up using a combination: copper wire for the short pieces, coat hanger for the long... works pretty well... I'm gonna make one all copper for the computer so it can have its own (i'm routing it thru a tuner card to be able to record shows and also to get better sound... my tv won't send convertible sound to my digital analog converter (audio only) whereas the hdmi from computer can send the whole sound thru for some reason...
great instructions, but the antenna WILL work with analog. I built a very similar one and a receive about 4 decent analog channels (about 4 other crappy ones) to this date (July 11,2011) and that particular antenna is indoors so cool antenna man!
@dnstormdatabase Have you tried hooking it up to a digital TV to see if you could catch more channels. i think I tried that where I live, and I could catch one or two on an analogue TV, but when I hooked it up to my HDTV, I was able to catch the rest!
Nice!! I made a template out of a piece of pine and put screws at the bend points.
super easy. Just take the wire and bend it at the angles from the screws, which are placed in a zig-zag pattern. then just measure the ends for the right length and presto!! Try it you'll like it. Peace. if you place a reflector about 3 to 4 inches behind the antenna you might get more signal strength. nice Tenna and nice vid@@
@sargetech Thanks! sounds like you made yourself a nice little antenna there! Glad you liked the video. Thanks for watching. Make sure to check out some of my other vids!
PS: I have some foil behind mine! I did a follow up video about that! :)
How far are you from the transmitter source ???? I thought when the HDTV switch over occured all channels would be UHF, but here in Oklahoma some channels are still VHF....I am having noise interference issues...From my understanding HDTV was supposed to be not as affected by noise and atmosphere conditions...I am running a large antenna in the attic with amplifiers...HDTV is hit and miss depending on atmosphere conditions and noise from other sources....
@avionicswirenut I don't know exactly, but I am in Lafayette, LA, and I can pick up our NBC station in Baton Rouge, probably about 50-60 miles away (rough guess). Thanks for watching. Make sure to check out some of my other videos!
Dude, you might have a good idea but show more about your project... I got tired of watching you talk so I clicked to the next one before you ever got started.
@martyg3469 In the description, the link should work. I've tested it a few times. Thanks for watching. Make sure to check out some of my other videos.
@captainkaos131313 Mine is not, and from my research, I didn't read anything about that. Thanks for watching. Make sure to check out some of my other videos.
I made this antenna for an old tv using a converter box that any hdtv antenna wouldn't work with. Now I can see 65 channels, clear image in Houston, Tx. Thanks!
I lost interest when you mentioned schematics and millimeters LOL. That solid copper wire is probably more expensive than buying the HDTV antenna at retail.
I built a coat hanger HDTV antenna and it cost me $9 total + 40min of assembly, I get all the OTA channels available in my area.
@RadioControlVideo HAHAHAA!!! yeah the schematics don't have to be exact just to let you know! The solid copper wire is expensive now a days, Copper went up in price!
This antenna will work well for stations transmitting a UHF signal, but some stations are still transmitting a VHF signal, so i suggest you add some rabit ears dipole antenna(sold at radio shack for $9.99) and get yourself a UHF/VHF combiner/splitter and connect the rabit ears to the VHF part of the combiner and connect your homemade UHF antenna wires to the UHF part of the combiner. then simply connect your coax cable to the output of the combiner and the other end strait to your TV or box conv
...just remember...you need a HD TV for this thing to work...(yes it works)...I m about 30 miles away from most tv transmitters...my only problem is, when it rains, does not work very well, ( I supposed every thing gets "shorted" out...)
Hey man great video! But im having a problem.. Ive followed every thing exactly they way you did it.. according to the schematic.. But when i plug it in im getting the BLue screen and No signal.... im using a flat screen tv with the Coaxial cable input on the back of it... Any ideas?
@Killsuit71 lol, I did not make this video:) But, glad it works now, I am building one now. I am just waiting on the 16 gauge wire to arrive in the mail. I painted my wood plank, and added a mesh screen as a reflector. Heres a pic if you want to see it, came out better than I hoped. (freeimagehosting (dot) net/image.php?1a52481bbc.jpg)
Thanks for the video. Other then calling screws, "nails", which was a little confusing (lol), it was a good vid. Much better then the lame ones on youtube that have only crappy music and no voice.
I liked your straight-forward, step by step presentation, but for those of us who need some notes along the way, you could add a stop frame with measurements, and explanations of things like baluns and transformers. Are they actually the same thing? Also, I wonder what would happen to the reception if you added a magnet and a coil of wire to the bottom of the antenna? Nice job overall, and I think I have the confidence to give this project a try.
@baconoirgrape Thanks! Glad you liked the video. I was a lot easier than I expected. I give more information with diagrams on my website. look in the video descritpion for the link. If you try the magnet thing, let me know how it turns out!
Well I just use a 6" loop Antenna that mounts on the in jack of my TV & get 18 channels, the same as with an RCA amplified antenna! Check out antennaweb . org / aw / Address . aspx (without the spaces). Enter your address & It will map out every station in your area so you can find out if you need a fancy antenna or not.
I build amature radio antennas as a hobby adding the metal screws and washers will actually change the length of the antenna wire when metal touches the antenna element it becomes part of the antenna and now will be off frequency all your marks were your bends are are off it will still work but wont perforn very well if you drill holes on either side of the wire at the bends and use plastic pull ties or zip ties its mutch cheaper than screws and and have mutch more db gain and more channels
THIS ANTENNA IS AMAZING i made this in an hour, i had a couple issues with a couple parts.
it picks up most of the channels i watch except ion ion life and channel 5-1 and 5-2 and 13-1 13-2 so yeah i mean and it doesnt get fuzzy its soo much better than the ones ive bought, even when i have meshed them together

How far are you from the transmitter source ???? I thought when the HDTV switch over occured all channels would be UHF, but here in Oklahoma some channels are still VHF....I am having noise interference issues...From my understanding HDTV was supposed to be not as affected by noise and atmosphere conditions...I am running a large antenna in the attic with amplifiers...HDTV is hit and miss depending on atmosphere conditions and noise from other sources....
avionicswirenut 7 months ago
@avionicswirenut I don't know exactly, but I am in Lafayette, LA, and I can pick up our NBC station in Baton Rouge, probably about 50-60 miles away (rough guess). Thanks for watching. Make sure to check out some of my other videos!

Dude, you might have a good idea but show more about your project... I got tired of watching you talk so I clicked to the next one before you ever got started.

@caper58 Sorry you didn't like it. The antenna works REALLY well, and I would recommend that you give it another shot.

shartne 9 months ago
@shartne Honestly, I'm not sure. My guess would be no, you probably need more of a directional antenna

Hi Lane
I can not find the antenna plans for how to build this antenna on this site. can u email it to me at j_s_ehler@yahoo.com

I made this antenna for an old tv using a converter box that any hdtv antenna wouldn't work with. Now I can see 65 channels, clear image in Houston, Tx. Thanks!

u ever think about trying other ways to make antennas and see what is better ?
GhostLaughingMan 9 months ago
I lost interest when you mentioned schematics and millimeters LOL. That solid copper wire is probably more expensive than buying the HDTV antenna at retail.
I built a coat hanger HDTV antenna and it cost me $9 total + 40min of assembly, I get all the OTA channels available in my area.
RadioControlVideo 9 months ago
@RadioControlVideo HAHAHAA!!! yeah the schematics don't have to be exact just to let you know! The solid copper wire is expensive now a days, Copper went up in price!
LaneVid 9 months ago
This antenna will work well for stations transmitting a UHF signal, but some stations are still transmitting a VHF signal, so i suggest you add some rabit ears dipole antenna(sold at radio shack for $9.99) and get yourself a UHF/VHF combiner/splitter and connect the rabit ears to the VHF part of the combiner and connect your homemade UHF antenna wires to the UHF part of the combiner. then simply connect your coax cable to the output of the combiner and the other end strait to your TV or box conv

Curious choice to show your face throughout build process instead OF THE ACTUAL ANTENNA ! Wondering what was going through your head...

...just remember...you need a HD TV for this thing to work...(yes it works)...I m about 30 miles away from most tv transmitters...my only problem is, when it rains, does not work very well, ( I supposed every thing gets "shorted" out...)
chefsabor 10 months ago
@chefsabor I notice that I have some problems in the rain also, it could be because of the cloud cover.
LaneVid 10 months ago
My closest hdtv channels are 46 and 50 miles away. Is there any hope of picking them up with a good hd antenna?
john17972 10 months ago
@john17972 I'm not sure, but for $20 it's worth testing out!
LaneVid 10 months ago
Hey man great video! But im having a problem.. Ive followed every thing exactly they way you did it.. according to the schematic.. But when i plug it in im getting the BLue screen and No signal.... im using a flat screen tv with the Coaxial cable input on the back of it... Any ideas?
Killsuit71 11 months ago
@Killsuit71 hmm... the only thing that I can think of is, is it on the right input.
LaneVid 11 months ago
@Killsuit71 did you reload the channels? It should scan all channels then build up the list of viewable channels
untouchblz 10 months ago
@untouchblz Yes i did! lol the one thing i did not think about! it works great thanks for the video and links man!!!!! ill subscribe!
Killsuit71 10 months ago
@Killsuit71 you're welcome! Thanks for subbing and watching!
LaneVid 10 months ago

Nice job overall, and I think I have the confidence to give this project a try.
baconoirgrape 11 months ago
@baconoirgrape Thanks! Glad you liked the video. I was a lot easier than I expected. I give more information with diagrams on my website. look in the video descritpion for the link. If you try the magnet thing, let me know how it turns out!
LaneVid 11 months ago
Well I just use a 6" loop Antenna that mounts on the in jack of my TV & get 18 channels, the same as with an RCA amplified antenna! Check out antennaweb . org / aw / Address . aspx (without the spaces). Enter your address & It will map out every station in your area so you can find out if you need a fancy antenna or not.
ARealWiseGuys 1 year ago
@ARealWiseGuys I've found that this homemade antenna does a better job then most of those loop antennas, but whatever gets the job done!
