They don't make music like this anymore. The horns:O-U-T-T-A S-I-G-H-T! Wile E. Coyote will capture and eat the Road Runner before we get horn sections like Ohio Players, Kool and the Gang and Tower of Power again.

OMG !! REAL HORNS !....lol. One of the top horn sections of the R&B bands back then and that is saying a lot. Many groups had killer horn sections. Mandrill, Kool and the Gang, just to name a couple. For me what really makes this track is the organ. It kicks ass
Cincinnati heads will remember this as the always-bangin' theme song for Jelly Roll's PLACE TO BE party from the Alms Ballroom at 2525 Victory Parkway....LIVE on WCIN 1480!
By the time I first heard this song it was a couple of years old (1974). A Philly DJ named Perri Johnson played it on his show. He was responsible for breaking most of the songs you would consider "Hype Sh*t" in the years before rap records.
I thought I was the only person who still remembers this song! I was a tenor sax player in high school in the early 70's when the funk band I was playing opened up with this, "Walt's First Trip." We played it in a nicely arranged medley with "Son of Shaft" by the Bar-Kays.
This one's from Rattlesnake right? I used to listen to it almost non-stop in HS even though I'm a bit younger than you. (I was always hunting down their old Westbound albums and rare funk like that.)
Walt's First Trip originally appeared on "Pleasure," in about '72 or '73, on the Westbound label. "Rattlesnake" was put out by Westbound in attempt to cash in on The O.P.'s popularity after they jumped to the Mercury label. Rattlesnake's tracks were culled from Westbound's vault and earlier albums released by the Ohio Players. BTW, I like your enthusiasm, Eddie. You remind me of me.

Westbound also did the same with Funkadelic after they left the label for Warner Bros.
