Fantistic!Terrific! You amaze Me more and more. Have You sang with every person of interest on this planet? Lots of Love Always&Always on Your Side. Dan (As for the bear buzz.Live & learn there is more to life than booze!)
After watching a few professional sopranos doing this aria I prefer Sheryl. OK her voice is "thinner" and "lighter", isn't "full" - well some sopranos have a tendency to screech, sets your teeth on edge. This was beautiful.
I think she does a very creditable job. At the risk of repeating what everyone else has said here 105 times before, let's not judge the performance by Metropolitan Opera standards. It's a very beautiful song and if (like me) you struggle to pick up subtleties in this kind of music then there's nothing at all wrong with it. They obviously rehearsed it a lot, Sheryl's Italian sounds flawless (Italians may not agree) which indicates a level of commitment to the cause.
Why attack Sheryl Crow when you can attack Pavarotti? This duet calls for a baritone (or bass baritone) and a soprano, and he's no baritone let alone a bass baritone.
I thought she did pretty well with that. I know it's not on the level of a proper operatic singer, but she's clearly had some vocal training. In the context of a pop singer, she sounded good.
You detractors of Cheryl Crow's performance have no idea what this song is about. In La ci darem la mano, Don Giovanni (Pavarotti) is in the act of trying to seduce Zerlina (Sheryl), who goes along, although with some trepidation. Cheryl plays this role perfectly, her sweet soprano voice fits the part perfectly. Pavarotti knew very well what he was doing when he chose Cheryl Crow. Just look at his s enthusiastic calling out Shreyl's name at the end of the performance of the song! Cheryl!!!!
- Ii's nice to see an opera singer sharing the stage with someone different
- it's an opportunity to see how much fuller an operatic voice is
- it's courageous for an untrained singer (in the lyrical sense) try to sing with such a tenor. Pavarotti is very gentle on this one, he leaves her space.
I don't particularly like the result musically speaking, but it's an appreciable performance and a good lesson.
@informacionceleste I'd say it's courageous of her to try singing opera, but it's pretty obvious her sound isn't nearly as rich, resonant and vibrant as an opera singer. I'm impressed that she had the guts to do this and that Pavarotti played the game, but the comparison is not really in her favor to say the least.
@trudbol lighten up sweetheart, this was not a competition, why does everything have to be about competing? can NO ONE have fun anymore and sing unto the Lord, or for any other reason, such as raising $ for starving kids? yeah, lets run them into the ground for actually DOING something about poverty rather than sitting at their computers hyper-evaluating every artistic performance by those giving of themselves
Sheryl is to be praised not condemned. So please p!ss off you bigheaded pricks who are talentless.
The way you people criticise singers on youtube is as if you can sing like Whitney Houston or Pavarotti, when in actual fact you can't and have nothing better to do than sit on your computers slating people all day.
We should be encouraging epople like Sheryl Crow to raise money for charity, not discourage them, by being so critical.
Why people keep complaining abou her? She's not a soprano, she's a great rock star, she was there to help kids and who didn't want to sing with Pavarotti? She did a great job, i'm not her fan but she's amazing here. GO SHERYL
I thought that, for a pop singer, she did a GREAT job. All of the snobs bashing her for stepping out of her comfort zone and daring to sing opera can get stuffed. It's for a fundraiser, sheesh!
@flugvogel If not anything else, this was the concert of surprises. I think that Sheryl Crow coped more than well in her role. But the jawdropping surprise was Michael Bolton. For the record, I never liked him but he blew everyone away at both Pagliacci and Nessun Dorma!
Just to relax you folk, Pavarotti (as baritone in this) isn't also perfect in this rendition of this aria. I understand why you criticise Sheryl's singing in this piece, but what for? That she is not an opera singer? That she doesn't have the voice and range for it? Yes, she doesn't, but everyone knows that. This was charity concert so what's the problem? I personally don't care about quality of this rendition because it was meant to be fun and to raise money for children not to won Grammy :-)
To all who denounce Sheryl Crow, please remember she is not an opera singer and why she should give because of this her part singing to somebody else, this is a Pavarotti and friends concert, and not an opera concert with some opera singers. and not she is not sound terrible, this is quite good for a woman that she is not singing opera.
Not many people have the talent to sing rock and opera, play guitar and piano, plus piano accordian - give credit where it is due. A truly talented woman!!!
@debiedog1 she may have the talent for rock, guitar, and piano, but I will certainly not be giving her any 'credit' for her 'talent to sing opera'. Believe me, she was truly awful. I cant even give her credit for having a good attempt at it. Do a youtube search on this aria and you will hear many fine examples of how it should sound. I know this concert was just a bit of fun, I dont expect her reach professional standards. But honestly, this was AWFUL.
I have to say this is bordering on awful. The only redeeming feature is that it's all meant as a good 'bit of fun'.
I can't quite understand why we have a tenor singing a baritone aria with a mediocre pop singer. Pavarotti sounds quite bad, but I suspect it is because he's toning down the power of his voice so as not to drown out her pathetic squeaking.
Sheryl did a reasonable job of staying in tune, but she sounds uncomfortable and out of her depth with the operatic style.
Mediocre pop singer? Christ, what a myopic snob you sound like. So, she isn't an opera singer? Pavarotti isn't a blues singer, either. Does that mean he should suffer insults from blues purists? Screw you. Both Crow and Pavarotti are at the top of their chosen genres. I applaud Pavarotti for his diversity, as well as his operatic excellence. Insults from a narrow mind are pathetic.
That Sheryl could stand up there with one of the all time greats and do well at all is applause worthy in and of itself. Was she a great opera singer? No, but she did damn well.
@9aspengold5... She got a degree in classical music performance in college. I only recently learned it included voice (I previously thought it was just for piano).
But she's never done opera. Her earliest amateur/professional performances were in rock & "pop." (I hate that term, but...)
Damn good for a skinny girl! Who says you have to be overweight to be a good opera singer!
Seriously, when you consider the amount of time she had to take out of her busy schedule just for the rehearsals alone to do a charity event and then to make it extra hard on herself by doing opera instead of her style of music, she deserves nothing but praise even if she did poorly which she did not. She did a great job! Very beautiful!
You must know very LITTLE about opera singers! Yes, there are several large figured singers but some of the large chest size is due to the HUGE diaphragms developed from hours upon hours of difficult rehearsals and training. Excepts in size: See Kristen Chenowith. I can understand anyone who is a fan of SC being proud of her efforts with Pavarotti but be truthful---she is not really in the ball park of these big hitters.
You have got to be kidding! I am not an operatic pro but REALLY LISTEN to the depth of the voices. Crow is having to work at this song where Pavarotti is using the song as a warm-up (break) to a more challenging song. Crow is eye candy and a pop celeb. Listen to the her (Always by your side) song where Crow sang with Sting. Sting ate her alive. Sarah McLachlan would have been better.
Her track record is too long and too successful for her to be merely a "pop celeb" in my opinion. She can definitely sing (besides being a great musician, song writer, record producer, etc). Try these:
watch?v=BBbhXvvrzm4
watch?v=NhFensv8OWY
As for comparing her to Pavarotti... why?? She's not any sort of opera singer and she's definitely not a soprano. He's a true opera legend. Of course there's no comparing the two.
MSC -- Sheryl is a pop celeb. Her work is not Rock Hall of Fame material. Please, "all I do is have some fun"!She is a good but not great musican with an above average voice. Her material is better than some but not biting. Give me Sarah McLachlan, Dido, Susanna Hoffs, or Suzanne Vega to listen to over Crow.
My GF is a Crow fan and I've gone to a SC Concert. It was OKAY. I got paid back by taking her to the Police and U2.
@kirk1931 it is interesting you should mention Sting's singing 'talent' here. It reminds me that he sang this particular aria himself on some Pavarotti tribute show. It was the most awful painful noise I have ever heard! haha. It's on YouTube, do a search on it. He was miles worse that Sheryl Crow if that is possible.
I don't like to put anyone down but this was not right. Sheryl does a great job in her style of music but this was horrible. Why didn't they get an opera singer to sing with Pavarotti?
I think this is delightful and know MANY young women who start out sounding exactly as she does in this before training classically and trying to have a career. She's memorized and Maestro Pavarotti isn't......
Most people who listen to music are not trained. They listen for the shear pleasure and don't judge a performance on anything more than their enjoyment. And that's a good thing. Be less critical, don't seek perfection but enjoy the magic and the emotion.
