One of the greatest scenes ever in Doctor Who, brilliantly shot, acted and directed. I wish Graeme Harper had directed the full season instead of just one story. They should have given him a full season's contract after his work on Caves of Androzani.
...this is perhaps the greatest Dr Who episode ever and the greatest scenes ever...Colin Baker was at his best, and Peri proved why she was one of the best companions ever, and Amy will never be as good or hot as her....Davros was at his most evil, using people as food to make money, and their heads as Imperial Daleks...Moffet would have ruined this episode...He has to go....
THIS is how Dr Who should be. Not the Kissy Kissy Soap Opera bilge the New crap is.
If this was done on the New Series, they'd use CGI for the Explosion, & have a Long Drawn out Over Emotional Scene where the Girl cries with Murray's Bland 2nd rate Jerry Goldsmith PUMPED up to MAX Droning out all hope of any sort of subtlety. And knowing Steven Muppet, He'l Probably reffer to his Checklist of Clichés, & make the two Kiss aswel. Thank Fuck he wasn't in Charge of DW back then.
@JackWolf10 You might not have heard a pin drop for straining to hear the dialogue. As I recall, Revelation was a very early example of something a lot of people complain about these days - incidental music overkill. It especially became a problem during the 7th Doctor's era, McCoy not being renowned for great diction and often mumbling his lines.
@outofthegreenmist Are you tying to make a joke? Or are you being serious. Hear a pin drop is a popular phrase for when something is so intense it makes people silent for a amount of time from shock. You argument is pointless if you are trying to be serious about this and actually complaining. If it was a joke then please excuse this and i get what you mean.
@outofthegreenmist Ironically, there is an item about this problem on the BBC website. This was prompted by Brian Cox's Wonders of the Universe series. There were some complaints recently, also, about too-loud music on Radio 4. Revelation of the Daleks is the earliest example of this I can personally remember. As I say, it probably doesn't sound that odd to modern eras, but in 1985 it was sometimes hard to concentrate on the story, especially when people were speaking in hushed tones.
@JackWolf10 At the time, some fans (who jokingly referred to this story - BECAUSE of the music - as 'The Daleks of Androzani') complained that the music was too intense and intrusive, especially in the (many) scenes in which the dialogue was rather quiet. Modern ears are more accustomed to almost continuous soundtrack music in TV drama. With modern TV's individual sounds are more easily discerned than on 80's sets with mono speakers. Some people still complain (ie. drumbeats over the news).
its a shame that New Who will never be as dark as The Caves of Androzani or Revelation of The Daleks which is a shame because these are some of the best doctor who episodes (especially now that Steven M is doing it more for the kiddies)
@hugodrax71 - Uh, huh. One of the better episodes of Colin Baker's run as The Doctor. I recorded it on VHS back when PBS still carried Doctor Who. A lot of this episode was influenced by a book called " The Loved One ", about the mortuary industry, & I suspect by the 70's movie " Soylent Green " as well.
i really loved this story it was dark and very intense. it was not colin bakers fault that the series was put on hiatus it was the bloody BBC who kept trying to give doctor who the chop, they could never get their house in order as things were a complete shambles within the BBC at that time. now if there werent constant strikes at the BBC and if john nathan turner hadnt been producer and if they had the script writers that they had during the tom baker years the series would have fared better.
this was one of the new classic doctor who dvd relseases i got and it kept freezing half way thru and half the story was missing it just kept looping on every copy of the dvd i got so i no longer own this episode as much as i love it i don't want to keep going bck to the shop with tht dvd did anybody else have this problem
@mufcgazza2k7 Yes, I did, but I thought the disc was scratched (by me, acciddentally). Hard to say if this is the same problem you had, but I played it on an older DVD player I had and it was fine - it was the newer one (DVD recorder) which was giving me the problems, even after cleaning the lens.
@outofthegreenmist haha yep happened to me too. I think i bought then replaced about 3 dvds from 2 different shops lol, i think there was a major cockup at the factory
@outofthegreenmist Strange, havnt had any trouble since though with recent DVDs, although it happens quite a lot with computer game discs ( a bit off topic lol )
When I first saw revelation it came across as being very bold and ambitious with a very dark tone; the story was well directed and lit in comparison to other eighties shows and also for the budget the story was very ambitous with a vast array of special effects, obviously dated now! It really showed where doctor who was headed with colin baker, we see the doctor mellowing after the regeneration Definitely my favourite davros story (not dalek story) perhaps my favourite doctor who story
Sci-fi does date quickly though. New Who will look dated in 20 years time.
I agree with everything you said on Revelation. The only thing I thought really let it down was, oddly enough, the Daleks themselves. I thought they were the least scary bunch of Daleks I'd seen since Death to the Daleks. They turned down the voices for some reason, which just made Roy Skelton sound even more like Zippy from Rainbow.
I aggree about new who becoming dated, I reckon it'll date faster due to HD television and improving technology; it is quite easy to pick at some CGI from series one looking at it now, I mean look at the slitheen! I also aggree about the daleks, not enough modulation for my liking.
@MALONEYCAMFIELD "Dated" is a Compliment, what with Everything now being Safe, Bland, Dull, Over-Acted, & uncreative. They Turned the Daleks Voices down because these Daleks were "Altered Humans", & So were made to Sound more Humanoid. Not Like the New Daleks where Every Daleks just Sounds the Same; Put through a Ring Modulator & CRANCKED up to Full. I Suppose it's Alien to you isn't it? To See People Taking Risks? The Only Risk NU HU's taken, is making the Daleks look like Power Rangers. Shite.
Being a doctor who fan who did not have to experience the horrendous hiatus fiasco I first approached this story without any prior knowledge of how badly received colin baker was. As I was born in 92 I have watched doctor who from a non linear perspective, so I started out watching dalek stories, then cybermen, then ones regarded as classics etc. As a result I watched revelation before I saw twin dilemma or timelash. When I watched revelation I thought it was fantastic
This is a good scene. I think Graeme Harper really made an effort to bring a cinematic quality to the series. I can't help thinking that he has been somewhat wasted as a TV director over the years, directing soaps etc. It would have been really interesting to see what he could do on the big screen. It's a shame he's never had the chance.
says it's scary, back when i was young this was the first classic story saw and got scared from this bit,it's probably it's the first one is why it's my favourite story
Not entirely true. It was cancelled for a number of reasons. The main one apparently given to John Nathan-Turner was that the BBC had to save some money for the launch of daytime television. Michael Grade, Controller of BBC One, and Jonathan Powell, the Head of Drama, have openly said since that they disliked the programme, in particular its cheap production values, and they weren't prepared to spend more money on it.
I love this story. Graeme Harper did a great an excellent job of providing a very artsy yet twisted enviroment that made the story very dark. Furthermore, I enjoyed how Peri and the Doctor were kept outside of the first episode as the story can develop for the cast, then tied into the second part.
